Busting George Karl myths
What should we expect as he takes over the Sacramento Kings?
George Karl has 1,201 wins in 2,072 career NBA games coached (regular and postseason).
Verdict: Untrue

Verdict: Untrue
Verdict: True
Verdict: True

With the news confirming that George Karl is the next head coach of the Sacramento Kings, as reported by ESPN's Marc Stein, he certainly will be on the sidelines Feb. 20, the Kings' first game after the All-Star break.
The question now shifts from whether the Kings will hire Karl to how successful he will be coaching a team led by All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins. To get a better idea of how Karl might fare, let's use the numbers to test the veracity of four common myths about Karl's coaching.
Myth 1: Karl's offense depends heavily on transition
Pace of play is perhaps the biggest concern about Karl's fit in Sacramento. The Kings were successful in the first month and a half of the season under Mike Malone playing at about an average pace (they ranked 17th in the NBA in possessions per 48 minutes, per NBA.com). When the Sacramento front office made the coaching change, part of the explanation was a desire to play a faster style. The Kings have done that under Tyrone Corbin, ranking fifth in pace during the past two months, and have seen their defense slip from 18th on a per-possession basis to 28th.
Given the organization's preferred style, Karl's reputation for up-tempo basketball may have helped his candidacy. But his track record is a bit more mixed than the stereotype would suggest. Karl's Denver teams certainly pushed the pace; the Nuggets led the NBA in possessions per 48 minutes in 2007-08, and never finished lower than fifth in the league. At the same time, up-tempo basketball in Denver long predated Karl's arrival (the team led the league in pace under Jeff Bzdelik the previous season) and is an obvious choice at altitude.
Playing at sea level, Karl's teams have tended to play faster than average, but not dramatically so. His Seattle SuperSonics teams ranked third in pace in both 1994-95 and 1995-96, reaching the NBA Finals the latter season. The Sonics slowed their pace as they aged, however, and only one of Karl's five Milwaukee Bucks teams played faster than the league average. Those Bucks teams relied much more on half-court execution from point guard Sam Cassell than on Cassell leading the fast break.
Karl has shown enough flexibility over the course of his career to choose the most appropriate style for his team, rather than forcing his favored pace upon it.
Verdict: Untrue
Myth 2: Karl's offense can't feature a post-up center
It certainly is true that Karl's best teams have rarely been built around the center position. In Seattle, he started defensive specialists like Ervin Johnson and Jim McIlvaine, who typically gave way to 6-foot-9 Sam Perkins (a stretch 5 long before the trend toward bigs spacing the floor caught on) in crunch time. Johnson and Karl were reunited in Milwaukee, where Karl also employed journeymen like Mark Pope and Scott Williams in the middle. And Karl's Denver teams thrived with defensive-minded centers like Marcus Camby and Kosta Koufos.

At the same time, Karl has never coached a center as gifted as Cousins. To the extent that he's had promising centers on his roster, they've tended to be players like Joe Barry Carroll and Benoit Benjamin, who squandered their talent, regardless the coach. The exception is Nene, who played both power forward and center for Karl with the Nuggets. Nene thrived as a secondary scorer after Camby's departure, averaging 14.5 points per game on league-leading 61.5 percent shooting in 2010-11. Nene ranked 24th in the league in post-ups that season, per Synergy Sports.
Part of the disconnect is that Karl's most talented post scorers have tended to play other positions. In Seattle, posting up centers made little sense when the Sonics had Shawn Kemp at power forward. Intriguingly, my SCHOENE similarity system pegs Kemp's 1993-94 season under Karl as the second-best match for Cousins' 2014-15 performance at the same age. Besides Nene, Karl also used small forward Carmelo Anthony in the post in Denver. Again, Karl's track record shows a willingness to feature his talent.
Verdict: Untrue
Myth 3: Karl is the master of the turnaround
With Karl in place, the Kings will become the first team since the 2004-05 Nuggets to have three different coaches at the helm for at least five games. Naturally, Karl was the third and final coach that season as well. Denver was 17-25 when Karl took over, and finished the season on a 32-8 run to make the playoffs. That's not Karl's only impressive midseason turnaround. Seattle was 20-20 when Karl arrived from Spain and unleashed the young duo of Kemp and Gary Payton, going 27-15 the rest of the campaign, and knocking off the Golden State Warriors in a first-round playoff upset.
It's too late for Sacramento make a similar run. Realistically, the Kings would need to go close to undefeated in the second half to claim the eighth seed in the Western Conference. Sacramento's hopes are pinned to next season, when Karl will have a full offseason and training camp to install his system. He's been effective in those scenarios as well. The 1998-99 Bucks improved by the equivalent of 10 wins in Karl's first season (which was shortened by the lockout), and Karl's first campaigns with the Cleveland Cavaliers (eight wins) and Golden State Warriors (10 wins) produced similar jumps.
Verdict: True
Myth 4: Karl's system isn't as effective in the playoffs
Karl's difficulty winning in the playoffs is the most valid criticism of his coaching. While it's certainly not true that Karl can't win in the playoffs -- his 1996 Sonics team was stopped only in the NBA Finals by the 72-10 Chicago Bulls -- his teams have tended to fall victim to upsets more often than expected.
In 2013, after the Nuggets were knocked off by the Golden State Warriors, Neil Paine (now of FiveThirtyEight) found in an Insider article that Karl's teams had won fewer series relative to expectations in the playoffs than any other coach since the playoffs expanded to 16 teams in 1984. I expanded on that research to determine that Karl's offenses were typically more to blame for the postseason disappointments.
Of course, Karl will be taking over a Kings team that hasn't reached the playoffs for eight seasons and counting. Only the Minnesota Timberwolves have gone longer without a postseason appearance. So if Sacramento has to worry about Karl's difficulty in the playoffs, it will be cause for celebration in California's capital city.
Verdict: True
