Curry's Chicago Home Broken Into

New York Knicks ' center Eddy Curry's home in Chicago was reportedly broken into early Saturday morning, police said. Curry may have been tied up during the possible home invasion.

Curry averaged 19.5 points and seven rebounds a game for the Knicks last season.

Curry was traded from the Chicago Bulls to the Knicks in October 2005.

"We [are] aware of the situation and are very thankful that Eddy Curry and his family are safe. He told us it was a traumatic experience. At this time we are aware that the local authorities are handling the situation," according to a statement from the Knicks. [READ]

Pietrus Would Rather Play For Miami

One Heat target, Warriors swingman Mickael Pietrus, is looking less likely.

"He's not going to take half the mid-level," said Pietrus' agent, Happy Walters. Pietrus' qualifying offer from the Warriors is $3.5 million, above what the Heat can offer.

Walters did, however, add that Pietrus would rather play for the Heat. Pietrus' arrival in South Florida would have to be through a sign-and-trade, possibly with unrestricted free agent James Posey. [READ]

R. Brewer's Hamstring Still Hurting

Henry Thomas is the agent for shooting guard Ronnie Brewer, also going into his second season, and he indicated Friday that Brewer is still hurting from the hamstring pull that kept him out of most of the Rocky Mountain Revue that concluded July 20. Brewer aggravated an earlier hamstring injury in the first practice of the Revue, played 20 minutes in the first game before twisting an ankle and didn't play again.

"It's coming along," Thomas said of Brewer's hamstring. "It's unfortunately not where it needs to be. He was, of course, very disappointed he was unable to participate in the Revue."

Thomas said teammate Carlos Boozer, who missed a whole year due to a hamstring, "has shared that with Ronnie.

"Those are tough injuries. I think he just wants to be real careful right now. I agree. I think the team agrees — not make it a worse situation than it is. I think the thing to do now is to be smart in terms of rehabbing it and making sure he gets it back to 100 percent," Thomas said. [READ]

Denver Loses Head Scout To Sonics

The Nuggets' scouting staff took its second hard hit this week with the departure of director Bill Branch, who is going to the Seattle SuperSonics .

Branch's 10-year tenure with the Nuggets, the past five seasons as assistant coach/director of scouting, will end Tuesday, and he will move on to be the Sonics' director of pro personnel. Branch is regarded as one of the NBA's top advance scouts and has 20 years experience working in the league.

"I had a great 10 years here," Branch said in a phone interview Friday. "I enjoyed all the people from coaches I worked for. I worked for a lot of people here in my tenure and I learned a lot of different things.

"Hopefully, it will help me down the road. I told (Nuggets) George (Karl) to be proud and happy for me and that the Sonics wanted me during your command. George treated me like a son." [READ]

Coach Maurice Cheeks sees rising 76ers star Andre Iguodala "going up the ladder." The latest rung involves landing a berth among eight to 10 young NBA players invited to practice and scrimmage with the U.S. national team before next month's Olympic qualifying tournament in Las Vegas.

Cheeks, in California, became aware of that development yesterday.

Jerry Colangelo, managing director of the national team, confirmed Iguodala's acceptance Wednesday. According to published reports, others who were tendered invitations include Al Jefferson, Boston; Devin Harris, Dallas; Monta Ellis, Golden State; and David Lee, New York. Portland's Brandon Roy might not be able to participate because of a scheduling conflict. [READ]

Now, however, in the wake of allegations linking NBA referee Tim Donaghy to gamblers, their credibility will be suspect as well.

Regardless of how the Donaghy case is resolved, the perception of possible corruption likely will linger.

Several of Donaghy's calls over the past two years, when he allegedly cooperated with gamblers, could arouse suspicion -- including one in a game between the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs on Feb. 12, 2006. [READ]

Blatche was said to be mulling over the offer last night, one source said.

The offer is substantially smaller than the one Blatche and his agent, Eric Fleisher, are said to be looking for. Blatche, who turns 21 next month, has had his name mentioned as a player who might possibly receive the mid-level exception, which has a starting salary of $5.35 million in the first season. [READ]

Although he has no salary-cap room remaining -- only the veteran's minimum of $1.2 million to offer -- Magic General Manager Otis Smith still has his sights set high as he continues working to fill the last two spots on the roster for next season.

Smith said Friday that he has been talking with free-agent veterans Chris Webber and P.J. Brown, among others. Webber finished last season in Detroit, but the Pistons may not re-sign him. Brown played last season in Chicago, but the Bulls are not interested in re-signing him. He said he will consider retirement but may play another year. [READ]

As minds throughout the NBA raced to recall details of the games Tim Donaghy officiated, to disputed calls and controversial moments, there were two Rockets games that immediately commanded attention.

The Rockets' loss to the Phoenix Suns on Jan. 17 and the win against the Orlando Magic on Feb. 25 stood out as games certain to draw the interest of investigators looking into whether Donaghy influenced the results of NBA games.

Donaghy was assigned four Rockets games last season, but the game against the Suns in January has drawn attention because of the movement of the betting line and results.

The Suns had been favored to win by 3 1/2 points the day before the game. They were favored by nine by game time (though the line might have moved so greatly because Tracy McGrady left the game the previous night with a sore back and did not play against the Suns). The Suns won by nine.

"The big trend with him in particular is that the first 15 games last season he refereed where we saw line movement of at least 1 1/2 points were a perfect 15-of-15 for the big-money people betting," said Matty O'Shea, general manager of content at pregame.com and a handicapper. "The odds of that happening randomly are only 33,000-to-1." [READ]
