Russell Westbrook, Lakers Have Mutual Interest In Parting Ways In Offseason

The Los Angeles Lakers and Russell Westbrook have mutual interest in parting ways this coming offseason, sources tell Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.

The Lakers traded for Westbrook at last year's draft, but the fit has been disappointing.

The Lakers discussed a deal with the Houston Rockets at the deadline centered on Westbrook for John Wall, but they didn't gain significant traction. The Lakers were resistant of include a 2027 first round pick. 

The Lakers' most realistic option may ultimately be stretching Westbrook's $47 million player option for the 22-23 season. The Lakers would drop to merely $2.5 million above the salary cap, which would allow them to sign a rotation piece to the non-taxpayer mid-level, and another player to the bi-annual exception.

"You'll at least be able to patch something together," said another cap analyst. "It might actually be their best move and puts some pieces around LeBron."

Zion Williamson has shown improvement in the bone of his surgically repaired right foot and will gradually progress to full weight-bearing exercise and basketball activity. 

Williamson remains out indefinitely. 

Williamson underwent surgery in the offseason for a broken bone in his right foot.

Williamson will be eligible for a contract extension with the New Orleans Pelicans this offseason. 

Rob Pelinka's Future With Lakers Less Than Certain

The future of Rob Pelinka running the front office of the Los Angeles Lakers is less certain than has been reported elsewhere, according to league insiders that spoke with Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.

Fischer writes that they "remain dubious that Pelinka is truly entrenched as Los Angeles' lead executive beyond this season."

The futures of Frank Vogel and Russell Westbrook with the Lakers are similarly in doubt.

Pelinka is said to have strong support from Kurt and Linda Rambis, who remain key advisors to Jeanie Buss. 

"His relationship with Kurt and Linda and Jeanie, it is very much a mom and pop shop," one assistant general manager told B/R. 

While Omar Wilkes of Klutch Sports has been mentioned as a possible candidate to replace Pelinka, they could also hire another executive above him similar to how Magic Johnson originally held the president position alongside Pelinka.  

Some of Pelinka's peers have criticized how he has handled the job in terms of working with other teams. Pelinka shifted from a deal close to the finish line this past offseason with the Sacramento Kings to instead trade for Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards.

"He wasn't returning some teams calls at [this year's] deadline," one general manager told B/R. 

"He was an asshole as an agent," said another assistant general manager. "He had the most powerful players and if he wanted the player moved, he would've eviscerated you as a staff to get whatever he wanted. You can't do that to people, and then expect them to work with you  when you join their side."

LeBron James Won't Shut Down His Season

The Los Angeles Lakers season hasn't gone as anyone expected, but LeBron James isn't giving up hope yet. James said he'll keep trying to win games until the season is over.

"We still have games to play," James said. "Until you stomp me out, cut my head off, bury me 12 feet under, then I got a chance. So that's my confidence."

Despite battling different injuries throughout the year, James has no plans of shutting it down this season. Sources indicate James plans to finish the season, no matter the Lakers record.

The Lakers continue to compete for a play-in spot and are in hopes of Anthony Davis returning in time for the postseason. 

Devin Booker Enters COVID-19 Protocols

Devin Booker has entered the NBA's COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

Booker last played on Sunday in Phoenix's 118-114 loss to the Utah Jazz. Booker previously entered the COVID-19 protocols in the preseason. 

The Suns are already playing without Chris Paul.

Kevin Durant To Return From Sprained MCL On Thursday

Kevin Durant will return from his sprained MCL on Thursday against the Miami Heat.

Durant last played on January 15th.

The Brooklyn Nets are currently the eighth seed with a 32-31 record. 

Executives Expect 76ers To Explore Tobias Harris Trade In Offseason

Prior to the trade deadline and their deal for James Harden, there were reports that the Philadelphia 76ers were gauging potential offseason trades involving Tobias Harris to clear cap space. The urgency for a Harris trade is no longer necessary 

"As I've talked to league executives, because I'm asking league executives a lot about Philadelphia," said Brian Windhorst on his podcast. "And everybody has seen them for a brief period of time, but they're are already speculating what Tobias Harris trades they might look at this summer."

This offseason, Harris will have two years remaining on his five-year, $180 million max contract signed in 2019.

The value of Harris as an offensive weapon has decreased following the acquisition of Harden. 

Frank Vogel Widely Expected To Not Return To Lakers In 22-23

The job of Frank Vogel as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers has been in peril for months, even dating back to his one-year contract extension in August.

"Few coaching figures hold optimism Vogel will still be manning the Lakers sideline come 2022-23," writes Jake Fischer at Bleacher Report. 

The next head coach of the Lakers will likely have prior head coaching experience. During the previous cycle, the Lakers also targeted Monty Williams and Tyronn Lue but were unable to get an agreement done with either head coach.

Jason Kidd was also a candidate and eventually was hired as an assistant coach before the departed the Lakers for the Dallas Mavericks last offseason. 

Vogel helped guide the Lakers to the 2020 championship in his first season with the team.
