Jason Kidd 'Absolutely' Will Remain Head Coach Of Mavericks

Mark Cuban said Jason Kidd will "absolutely" remain head coach of the Dallas Mavericks next season.

The Mavericks were in the Western Conference Finals last season and have had a disappointing follow-up season after losing Jalen Brunson. Two of the Mavericks' big offseason additions, Christian Wood and JaVale McGee, didn't have the type of impact for Kidd that the front office anticipated. 

The presence of Kidd as head coach is also believed to be of importance to Kyrie Irving, who will be a free agent this offseason.

When the Mavericks hired Kidd during the 2021 offseason, he was signed to a four-year contract, which puts him at the halfway point of that deal.

The Dallas Mavericks gave up a lot to acquire Kyrie Irving, who will be a free agent this offseason. The Mavericks hope to keep Irving though it remains to be seen if they will be on the same page on a contract.

"I'd love to have him stay for sure," Cuban said. "I'd love to have him. I want him to stay for sure, and I think we have a good shot. I think he's happy here. He tells me he's happy here, and I get along great with him. I think he's a good guy. All I can tell you is everything I thought I knew about Kyrie because of everything I read was 100% wrong."

The Mavs can offer Irving as much as $272 million over five years.

Cuban was noncommittal when asked if the Mavs could be outbid for Irving in free agency this summer.

"I don't know," Cuban said. "I guess there's always too high a price, depending, but now with the new CBA, it's a different world."

During an unexpected media availability on Wednesday, Mark Cuban was asked whether he gets a sense Luka Doncic remains optimistic about the long-term future of the Dallas Mavericks.

"Look, players don't talk like that, just like, 'Hey, I'm here for the next 17 years.'" said Cuban. "He'd like to be here the whole time, but we've got to earn that."

Cuban was then asked how the Mavericks can do that.

"Win championships," Cuban said. "It's amazing how that cures all. I mean, before Giannis [Antetokounmpo] won, everybody was like, 'Where's he going? Where's he going? He's not staying. He's not staying.' [Nikola] Jokic, while they haven't won, da, da, da, da, da. Dirk [Nowitzki] before [the Mavs won the 2010-11 title], right?

"There's no great player, no superstar, where they don't question, 'What are you gonna do if you haven't won yet?"

Anthony Davis Still Has Bone Bruise In Foot, Overuse Increases Risk Of Reinjury

Anthony Davis has been on a back-to-back restriction since returning from his foot injury on January 25th. The bone spur fractured off the navicular bone and he's also dealing with the stress reaction. 

Davis played in his first back-to-back since the injury in Wednesday's game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers. 

"It's out of the coaching staff's hands," said Dave McMenamin on the Hoop Collective Podcast about whether Davis plays in a back-to-back. "It's out of Anthony Davis' hands. As we've been told over and over again, the Lakers' medical staff recognizes there's been a program Anthony Davis has been on since missing 20 straight game with a very complicated right foot issue.

"He had a MRI about a month ago- there's still a bone bruise in that foot. The medical diagnosis is overuse will spike the chance of reinjuring it to the point where the pain level is not something he can play with, which can lead to him missing a chunk of time."

Utah Jazz forward and breakout start Lauri Markkanen is going to have a different kind of summer from most of his NBA contemporaries. This summer, Markkanen will complete his requirement of serving in the Finnish military.

All male citizens of Finland must complete mandatory military service before they turn 30 years old. Markkanen has previously postponed his service while in college at Arizona, playing for the Finnish national team, and last season when the Cleveland Cavaliers made the Play-In Tournament.

Markkanen said while the service is mandatory, it's something he's proud to do.

"It's mandatory, we have to do it, but at the same time we take pride in it, too," said Markkanen. "I think it sets an example to serve. And I'm confident I can do it in a way that it's not going to affect my preparation for next season, either. Of course, I'd rather be working out like I normally do (in the offseason), but I've heard they do a good job of combining the two. You're able to do your job working as an athlete and your basic training at the same time."

The Washington Wizards were recently eliminated from playoff contention and will finish under .500 on the season. However, the team has seen enough progress that they plan to keep Wes Unseld Jr. as their head coach.

“He is our coach moving forward,” Wizards president and general manager Tommy Sheppard said Tuesday.

The Wizards have gone 69-92 thus far under Unseld. However, both campaigns have seen injuries to key players sink those seasons.

Khris Middleton Leaves Game With Knee Soreness, Status For Regular Season Uncertain

Khris Middleton left the Milwaukee Bucks' 105-92 win over the Chicago Bulls due to right knee soreness in the first quarter and did not return to the game.

Mike Budenholzer described the injury as a re-aggravation of the knee soreness that bothered Middleton throughout the season.

Budenholzer said he was unsure of Middleton's status for the final two games of the regular season.

"We'll learn more going forward. So, I couldn't say tonight," said Budenholzer. 

The team is also likely to be without Grayson Allen for the rest of the regular season. 

The Bucks clinched the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference on Wednesday.
