The appetite of NBA front offices to send out a large collection of future first round picks in a trade for star players has decreased dramatically following the introduction of the current collective bargaining agreement due to the restrictive nature of the apron system.
While Anthony Davis, Paul George, Kevin Durant, Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert and Mikal Bridges were traded for significant future draft capital between 2019 and 2024, the subsequent Durant trade from the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets in 2025 is more illustrative of the current climate in which he returned just one first round pick.
The reluctance of teams to trade multiple first round picks into the future is expected to impact the trade packages for Davis and potentially even Giannis Antetokounmpo.
"What I'm telling you is that when I talk to executives and these executives are not in trade talks with the Bucks or another for a star player right now, the mood in the NBA right now is not give up four first round picks for anybody," said Brian Windhorst on The Hoop Collective podcast on Friday.
"Okay, maybe if Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander) came on, or Victor (Wembanyama)... Like people don't want to do that because the aprons have spooked so many teams. All these teams are worried about getting into apron trouble where they can't reset their rosters. And you get into a situation like the Celtics were in where you got to rip your team down."
The age, injury history and contract obligations of Davis and Antetokounmpo factor into the calculus of what teams are willing to give up, especially out into the future.
"This is how teams are thinking right now," added Windhorst. "They're a little freaked about the aprons. There ain't going to be no five first round pick trades. I know that we saw those for a while. That's just not to happen."

Giannis Antetokounmpo told at least one Milwaukee Bucks teammate during the summer that he believed a trade to the New York Knicks was close to materializing, multiple sources said this week. The two-time MVP gave Milwaukee a preference to be traded to New York, and the teams held discussions in August.
ESPN reported the Knicks were afforded an exclusive negotiating window in August to make trade pitches to Milwaukee for Antetokounmpo. The talks did not progress beyond preliminary discussions, and no trade materialized.
The Knicks continue to be cited as a team that must be mentioned in any credible discussion about Antetokounmpo's future. New York does not currently have any tradeable first-round picks but possesses four swap rights available.
Antetokounmpo becomes eligible on October 1, 2026 for a four-year, $275 million maximum extension through the 2030-31 season. He could become a free agent as early as 2027 if he declines the extension.
If Antetokounmpo is traded, he can sign the same extension with his new team six months after the deal. The timing provides flexibility for both Milwaukee and any potential trade partner.
New York's absence of tradeable first-round picks complicates any potential deal for Antetokounmpo. The Knicks surrendered significant draft capital in recent trades for Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Antetokounmpo's affinity for playing in New York has been mentioned often, both publicly and privately. The Brooklyn Nets have been previously cited as a potential suitor for Antetokounmpo, but they have pivoted to another plan as that scenario is considered unrealistic.

The San Antonio Spurs have held numerous discussions throughout the years with Alex Saratsis, Giannis Antentokounmpo's agent, about joining the front office, according to Jake Fischer of The People's Insider.
Fischer adds that the Spurs were unwilling to discuss either the No. 2 pick that became Dylan Harper or Stephon Castle in any potential trade involving Antetokounmpo last June.
There no indication that the Spurs have changed their thinking in parting with either guard.
Antetokounmpo and Saratsis recently opened up discussions with the Bucks over Antetokounmpo's future.

The Golden State Warriors are banged up as they started a three-game road trip. Stephen Curry is out with a quad injury, Draymond Green exited the arena on Thursday in a walking boot, while Jimmy Butler missed the loss at the Philadelphia 76ers.
Curry is recovering and Green said he's been playing through a right foot issue for a while. Butler's left knee has been bothering him over the last week, but the Warriors and head coach Steve Kerr don't seem overly concerned about the injury.
Butler left Tuesday's loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder at halftime due to left knee soreness. He had an MRI on the injury, and missed the game in Philadelphia, but the Warriors seemingly don't think it will be a long-term injury.
Golden State did welcome Al Horford and De'Anthony Melton back to the lineup against the 76ers. And they'll need that depth, as it's uncertain if Green or Butler will play in either end of a back-to-back set at the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls this weekend.

LeBron James' streak of 1,297 consecutive double-digit regular-season ended in the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 win over the Toronto Raptors on Thursday. James scored eight points and passed up a chance to extend the streak while attempting a game-winning shot when he passed to Rui Hachimura, who hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.
"Bron told me right before this, 'I got you. It's going to come to you,'" Hachimura said in an on-court televised interview.
James' streak was easily the longest in NBA history, with the second-longest being held by Michael Jordan at 866 games.
James last failed to score 10 or more points on January 5, 2007.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is looking to get healthy and "make things work" with the Milwaukee Bucks, according to Chris Haynes.
"He spoke to me about just being where his feet are planted...that is where his focus is at," said Haynes about a recent conversation with Antetokounmpo.
Haynes then recounted a story that Antetokounmpo told years earlier about how when he sees a wall, he wants "to run through the wall, and make things work."
"That's my focus right now. I want to run through a wall, make things work, get healthy, and try to be there for my team," recalled Haynes about what Antetokounmpo told him.
Haynes then added that Antetokounmpo doesn't know what the Bucks' plans are for this future.
"He doesn't know what's going on behind the scenes with the front office, or what they're looking at doing as far as his future goes ... his focus is getting healthy, being there for his team, and not running from a situation," added Haynes.
Antetokounmpo and his agent opened up discussions over his future with the Bucks earlier this week.
Antetokounmpo is likely to miss close to four weeks with a calf strain.
