Then, the young Licchavi Ratnakara, having celebrated the Buddha with these verses, further addressed him:
그 때에 장자의 아들 보적이 이 게송을 설하고 부처님께 사뢰었다.
"Lord, these five hundred young Licchavis are truly on their way to unexcelled, perfect enlightenment, and they have asked what is the bodhisattvas' purification of the Buddha-field. Please, Lord, explain to them the bodhisattvas' purification of the Buddha-field!"
세존이시여, 이 오백인 장자의 아들이 다 이미 아뇩다라삼먁삼보리의 마음을 내었고 불국토가 청정하여진 일을 듣고져 하나이다. 바라옵건데 세존께서는 여러 보살들의 국토를 깨끗이 하는 인행(因行)을 말씀 하여 주소서.
Upon this request, the Buddha gave his approval to the young Licchavi Ratnakara: "Good, good, young man! Your question to the Tathágata about the purification of the Buddha-field is indeed good. Therefore, young man, listen well and remember! I will explain to you the purification of the Buddha-field of the bodhisattvas."
부처님이 말씀하셨다.
착하다, 보적아. 네가 능히 여러 보살들을 위하여 여래가 국토를 깨끗이 한 인행을 물었으니 자세히 듣고 잘 생각하라. 너에게 말하여 주리라.
"Very good, Lord," replied Ratnakara and the five hundred young Licchavis, and they set themselves to listen.
이때에 보적과 오백 장자 아들은 부처님의 분부를 받잡고 조용히 들었다.
The Buddha said, "Noble sons, a Buddha-field of bodhisattvas is a field of living beings. Why so? A bodhisattva embraces a Buddha-field to the same extent that he causes the development of living beings. He embraces a Buddha-field to the same extent that living beings become disciplined. He embraces a Buddha-field to the same extent that, through entrance into a Buddha-field, living beings are introduced to the Buddha-gnosis. He embraces a Buddha-field to the same extent that, through entrance into that Buddha-field, living beings increase their holy spiritual faculties.

부처님은 말씀하셨다.
보적아, 중생을 위하여 보살이 불국토를 취하느니라. 왜냐하면 보살이 교화할 중생을 따라 불국토를 갖는 것이며, 조복할 중생을 따라 불국토를 갖는 것이며, 중생들이 마땅히 어떤 국토로써 부처님의 지혜에 들어갈는지에 따라 불국토를 갖는 것이며, 중생들이 마땅히 어떤 국토로서 보살의 근기를 일으키는지에 따라 불국토를 갖느니라
Why so? Noble son, a Buddha-field of bodhisattvas springs from the aims of living beings. For example, Ratnakara, should one wish to build in empty space, one might go ahead in spite of the fact that it is not possible to build or to adorn anything in empty space. In just the same way, should a bodhisattva, who knows full well that all things are like empty space, wish to build a Buddha-field in order to develop living beings, he might go ahead, in spite of the fact that it is not possible to build or to adorn a Buddha-field in empty space. "Yet, Ratnakara, a bodhisattva's Buddha-field is a field of positive thought. When he attains enlightenment, living beings free of hypocrisy and deceit will be born in his Buddha-field.

왜냐하면 보적아, 보살이 깨끗한 국토를 갖는 것은 다 중생을 이익케 하기 위함이니라. 마치 어떤 사람이 빈 땅에다 집을 지으려 하면 마음대로 장애가 없으려니와, 만일 허공에 집을 지으려 하면 마침내 될 수 없나니 보살도 그러하여, 중생을 성취하기 위하여 불국토를 갖기를 원하는 것이니 불국토를 갖기를 원하는 것이 허공에 집을 지으려는 것이 아니니라.
"Noble son, a bodhisattva's Buddha-field is a field of high resolve. When he attains enlightenment, living beings that have harvested the two stores and have planted the roots of virtue will be born in his Buddha-field.

보적아, 알지어다. 곧은 마음이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처될 때에, 아첨하지 않는 중생들이 그 나라에 와서 나느니라.
"A bodhisattva's Buddha-field is a field of virtuous application. When he attains enlightenment living beings that live by all virtuous principles will be born in his Buddha-field.
* application ; 열심, 근면, 적용
깊은 마음이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처될 때에 공덕을 갖춘 중생들이 그 나라에 와서 나느니라.
"A bodhisattva's Buddha-field is the magnificence of the conception of the spirit of enlightenment. When he attains enlightenment, living beings that are actually participating in the Mahayana will be born in his Buddha-field.
보리심이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처될 때에 대승 중생들이 그 나라에 와서 나느니라.
A bodhisattva's Buddha-field is a field of generosity. When he attains enlightenment, living beings that give away all their possessions will be born in his Buddha-field.

보시하는 것이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처될 때에 모든 것을 애착하지 않는 중생들이 그 나라에 와서 나느니라.
"A bodhisattva's Buddha-field is a field of tolerance. When he attains enlightenment, living beings with the transcendences of tolerance, discipline, and the superior trance - hence beautiful with the thirty-two auspicious signs - will be born in his Buddha-field.

욕된 일을 참는 것이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처될 때 삼십이상으로 장엄한 중생들이 그 나라에 와서 사느니라
"A bodhisattva's Buddha-field is a field of meditation. When he attains enlightenment, living beings that are evenly balanced through mindfulness and awareness will be born in his Buddha-field.
선정을 닦는 것이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처될 때에 마음을 걷어잡아 어지럽지 아니한 중생들이 그 나라에 와서 나느니라.
"A bodhisattva's Buddha-field is a field of wisdom. When he attains enlightenment, living beings that are destined for the ultimate will be born in his Buddha-field.
지혜가 이 보살의 정토이니 보살이 성불할 때에 마음이 바로 가라앉은 중생이 그 나라에 와서 나느니라
"A bodhisattva's Buddha-field consists of the four immeasurables. When he attains enlightenment, living beings that live by love, compassion, joy, and impartiality will be born in his Buddha-field.

네가지 한량없는 마음(四無量心)이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처될 때에 사랑하고 불쌍히 여기고 기뻐하고 널리 용서하는 중생들이 그 나라에 와서 나느니라.
"A bodhisattva's Buddha-field consists of the four means of unification. When he attains enlightenment, living beings that are held together by all the liberations will be born in his Buddha-field.

네 가지 포섭하는 마음(四攝法)이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처될 때에 해탈법에 포섭된 중생들이 그 나라에 와서 나느니라.
"A bodhisattva's Buddha-field is skill in liberative technique. When he attains enlightenment, living beings skilled in all liberative techniques and activities will be born in his Buddha-field.

방편이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처될 때에 방편으로 걸림 없는 중생들이 그 나라에 와서 나느니라.
"A bodhisattva's Buddha-field consists of the thirty-seven aids to enlightenment. Living beings who devote their efforts to the four foci of mindfulness, the four right efforts, the four bases of magical power, the five spiritual faculties, the five strengths, the seven factors of enlightenment, and the eight branches of the holy path will be born in his Buddha-field.
삼십칠 조도품(助道品)이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처될 때에 四념처, 四정근(正勤), 四신족(神足), 오근(五根), 오력(五力), 칠각지(七覺支), 팔정도(八正道)를 닦는 중생들이 그 나라에 와서 나느니라.
"A bodhisattva's Buddha-field is his mind of total dedication. When he attains enlightenment, the ornaments of all virtues will appear in his Buddha-field.
지은 공덕을 잘 회향(廻 向)하는 것이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처될 때에 온갖 공덕을 갖춘 나라를 얻게 되느니라.
"A bodhisattva's Buddha-field is the doctrine that eradicates the eight adversities. When he attains enlightenment, the three bad migrations will cease, and there will be no such thing as the eight adversities in his Buddha-field.

팔난(八難)을 말하여 제하는 것이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처될 때에 그 나라에 삼악도와 팔난이 없느니라.
"A bodhisattva's Buddha-field consists of his personal observance of the basic precepts and his restraint in blaming others for their transgressions. When he attains enlightenment, even the word 'crime' will never be mentioned in his Buddha-field.

스스로 계행을 지니고 다른 이의 잘못을 말하지 않는 것이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처될 때에 그 나라에 계율을 범한다는 이름이 없느니라.
"A bodhisattva's Buddha-field is the purity of the path of the ten virtues. When he attains enlightenment, living beings who are secure in long life, great in wealth, chaste in conduct, enhanced by true speech, soft-spoken, free of divisive intrigues and adroit in reconciling factions, enlightening in their conversations, free of envy, free of malice, and endowed with perfect views will be born in his Buddha-field.

십선을 닦는 것이 보살의 정토니 보살이 부처 될 때에 단명하지 않고 살림이 넉넉하며 깨끗한 행실을 가지고 말하는 것이 성실하며 항상 부드러운 말을 하고 권속이 흩어지지 아니하며 다투는 일을 잘 화해시키고 말하는 것이 남에게 이익되며 남을 미워하지 아니하며 정견(正見)을 지닌 중생이 그 나라에 와서 나느니라.
"Thus, noble son, just as is the bodhisattva's production of the spirit of enlightenment, so is his positive thought. And just as is his positive thought, so is his virtuous application. His virtuous application is tantamount to his high resolve, his high resolve is tantamount to his determination, his determination is tantamount to his practice, and his practice is tantamount to his total dedication, his total dedication is tantamount to his liberative technique, his liberative technique is tantamount to his development of living beings, and his development of living beings is tantamount to the purity of his Buddha-field. The purity of his Buddha-field reflects the purity of living beings; the purity of the living beings reflects the purity of his gnosis; the purity of his gnosis reflects the purity of his doctrine; the purity of his doctrine reflects the purity of his transcendental practice; and the purity of his transcendental practice reflects the purity of his own mind.

이러므로 보적아, 보살이 그 마음이 곧으므로 좋은 일을 행하게 되며 좋은 일을 행하므로 깊은 마음을 얻으며 깊은 마음을 따라 조복되며 뜻이 조복되므로 말한 대로 행하며 말한 대로 행하므로 능히 지은 공덕을 잘 회향하며 회향심을 따라 방편이 생기며, 방편을 따라 중생을 성취하며 중생을 성취하므로 불국토가 깨끗해지며, 국토가 깨끗하므로 설법하는 것도 깨끗하고, 설법이 깨끗하므로 지혜가 깨끗하며 지혜가 깨끗하므로 그 마음이 깨끗하고 마음이 깨끗하므로 온갖 공덕이 깨끗하여 지나니라. 그러므로 보적아, 만일 보살이 깨끗한 국토를 얻으려거든 먼저 그 마음을 깨끗이 하여야 한 다. 그 마음이 깨끗하면 불국토가 깨끗하여 지느니라.
