“Weighed In The Balances And Found Wanting”
Daniel 5:27
The Bible is a book filled with the knowledge and wisdom of God. God gives us His knowledge so we can know what He expects of us. God gives us His wisdom so we can know how to operate our life to be pleasing in His sight. He also gives us revelation. Through His Word, God reveals things He will bring upon the earth. God's Word also reveals the hidden mysteries from the beginning of time as to what God is going to do with His people.
Today I want to point you to one of the most tragic stories in the Bible. It is the story of a man who knew what he ought to do but didn't do it. And it stands as a striking lesson to millions in our own day who are not willing to obey the truth after it has been revealed to them. Let me say this friends, that the greatest favor Heaven can bestow upon us, is to give us a knowledge of truth. Some men pray for an understanding of God's will for years, and when the prayer is answered they refuse to obey. This is surely one of the most presumptuous things that anyone can do.
We have an example in the Bible of a man who did not heed God's knowledge, wisdom, or revelation. This man was Belchazzar, the grandson of Nebuchadnezzar. Belchazzar ordered a party for all the heads of his government. He called for all the gold and silver vessels Nebuchadnezzar had brought from the temple of God when he destroyed Jerusalem. Belchazzar was going to serve his guests wine in these vessels. In doing so, Belchazzar used the vessels intended for use in God's temple to be used as fleshly vessels of gold and silver. They openly and defiantly made a mockery of all those things that had been dedicated to God for His service.
Because of these acts, God sent part of a man's hand, and graphically wrote on the wall: "Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin". This was a direct message to Belchazzar.
The word Mene means "God has numbered thy kingdom and finished it", Daniel 5:26.. In fulfillment of this proclamation, that night Darius the Mede captured Babylon, and Belchazzar was killed.
The word Tekal means "thou art weighed in the balances and art found wanting", Daniel 5:27.
The word Peres is the same word as Upharsin and means "thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians." Daniel 8:28.
The name Belchazzar means "the lord of destruction has straitened". God informed Belchazzar he had been weighed in the balances and was found wanting. Today God is weighing each member of his body in the balances. The Lord of destruction will bring straitening in the lives of those who are found wanting.
We do not use balances any more for weighing objects, we now use scales. The way the balances worked was you put a weight on one side of the balance, and equal weight was added on the other side, until the balances weighed equal. If balances do not balance equally, then they are said to be "out of balance".
When our lives are not in balance with the things God has given us in His Word, then our lives, too, are out of balance. If God's righteousness was on one side of the scale and our righteousness in Christ was on the other side, would the scale balance, or would our self-righteousness out weigh God's righteousness in our lives? If we weighed our knowledge of His glorious Word against our knowledge of worldly things would the scales balance, or would our worldly knowledge outweigh our knowledge of God? If our willingness to serve God was weighed against our desire to serve self, would the scales balance, or would our desire to serve self tip the balance in favor of self instead of God. If our bank account was weighed against the treasures we have laid up in heaven, which way would the scales be tipped?
If our lives were weighed in God's balances today could the Lord speak to us, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant", or would He have to say to us, "You have been weighed in My balances and have been found wanting"? Would He say, "I have numbered your kingdom and finished it?" Would He say, "Thy kingdom is divided between your desire to serve and please self more then it is to serve and please Me?"
Is the Lord of destruction going to have to straighten your walk in the judgment He is going to bring upon all unrighteousness? This judgment is called the Wrath of God.
Every person who will enter into God's Kingdom will be weighed in His balances. How will the balances be tipped when your life is weighed against the life of Christ? Jesus came as our example of the man God created in the garden. God will settle for nothing less.
If we are to enter into the Kingdom to rule and reign with Christ, then our life must balance out with His life or we will be found wanting. We need to hear the words Paul wrote to the Hebrews:
"Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;" Hebrews 3:13-14
We are admonished to exhort one another daily. God is speaking through His Word to His people so we can be partakers of Christ. God has given us His Word to live by. When we live by His Word, then when we are weighed in God's balances we will not be found wanting because our life will not be out of balance with His life.
God's Word to His body is, "Repent, and be healed". Come out from among them, and be not partakers of His wrath. Our place in God's Kingdom is to stand in His presence. Our life is in His balances. We need to ask ourselves, "Is our life in balance or do we need to change?"
