29장
In these days when Wang Lung had decided a thing
he could not do it quickly enough.
이 시절 왕룽은 한 가지 일을 결심하면
지체 없이 해치워야 직성이 풀렸다.
As he grew older he grew impatient to have done with things
and to sit in the latter part of the day at peace
and idle and to watch the late sun
나이가 들수록 그는 일을 빨리 마무리 짓고
하루가 저물녘에는 평온하고 한가롭게 앉아
저무는 해를 바라보거나,
and sleep a little after he had strolled about his land.
아침나절에 땅을 한 바퀴 거닌 뒤 잠깐 낮잠이나 청하고 싶어했다
So he told his elder son what he had decided
and he commanded the young man to arrange the matter,
그리하여 그는 장남에게 자신의 결정을 알리고
모든 일을 주선하라고 말했다.
and he sent for his second son to come and help
with the moving
둘째 아들에게도 와서 이사를 도우라고 전갈을 보냈다.
and on a day when they were ready they moved,
first Lotus and Cuckoo and their slaves and goods,
and then Wang Lung's eldest son and his wife
and their servants and the slaves.
준비가 끝난 어느 날 그들은 이사를 했는데,
먼저 연화와 구쿠, 그리고 그들의 종들이 짐이 챙겨 움직였고,
다음으로 왕룽의 장남과 그의 아내, 그들의 하인들과 종들이 이동했다.
But Wang Lung himself would not go at once,
and he kept with him his youngest son.
하지만 왕룽 자신은 선뜻 떠나려 하지 않았고,
막내아들을 자기 곁에 남겨두었다.
When the moment came for leaving the land
whereon he was born he could not do it easily nor
so quickly as he had thought
자신이 태어난 땅을 떠나야 할 순간이 오자
마음이 쉽게 움직이지 않았고 자신이 생각했던 것만큼
빨리 발길이 떨어지지 않았던 것이다.
and he said to his sons when they urged him,
"Well then, prepare a court for me to use alone
and on a day that I wish I will come,
and it will be a day before my grandson is born,
and when I wish I can come back to my land."
아들들이 그를 재촉하자 그는 말했다.
"자, 그러면 내가 혼자 쓸 안뜰을 하나 마련해 두거라.
내가 가고 싶은 날에 갈 터이니, 손주가 태어나기 전날쯤이 될 게다.
그리고 내가 원할 때면 언제든 내 땅으로 다시 돌아올거야.“
And when they urged him yet again, he said,
"Well, and there is my poor fool
and whether to take her with me or not I do not know,
but take her I must, for there is no one who will see
if she is fed or not unless I do it."
아들들이 다시 한번 그를 재촉하자 그는 말했다.
"글쎄, 여기 내 가련한 바보 딸이 있는데,
이 아이를 데려가야 할지 말아야 할지 도무지 모르겠구나.
하지만 내가 아니면 이 아이가 밥은 챙겨 먹는지 어쩌는지
살펴줄 사람이 없으니 데려가긴 해야겠다.“
This Wang Lung said in some reproach
to the wife of his eldest son, for she would not suffer
the poor fool near her, but was finicking and squeamish
and she said, "Such an one should not be alive at all,
and it is enough to mar the child in me to look at her."
왕룽은 맏며느리 들으라고 다소 책망 섞인 투로 이 말을 했는데,
며느리가 바보 딸을 곁에 두려 하지 않고 몹시 까다롭고 깔끔을 떨며
"저런 아이는 애초에 살아 있어서는 안 됩니다.
저 아이를 쳐다보는 것만으로도
배 속의 제 아이를 망치기에 충분합니다"라고 말했기 때문이었다.
And Wang Lung's eldest son remembered the dislike of his wife
and so now he was silent and said no more.
장남도 아내의 이런 혐오를 기억하고 있었기에
이제는 침묵하며 더 이상 아무 말도 하지 않았다.
Then Wang Lung repented his reproach and he said mildly,
"I will come when the maid is found
who is to wed the second son, for it is easier to stay here
where Ching is until the matter is completed."
그러자 왕룽은 자신이 괜한 말을 했다고 느끼고 부드럽게 말했다.
"둘째 아들과 혼인할 처녀를 구하고 나면 가마.
일이 다 끝날 때까지는 칭 서방이 있는 여기에 머무는 편이 더 좋겠구나."
The second son, therefore, gave over his urging.
그리하여 둘째 아들도 더는 재촉하지 않았다.
There was left in the house, then,
none but the uncle and his wife and son and Ching
and the laboring men, besides Wang Lung
and his youngest son and the fool.
그리하여 이 집안에는 왕룽과 그의 막내아들, 그리고 바보 딸 외에
숙부와 숙모, 사촌, 그리고 칭 서방과 일꾼들만이 남게 되었다.
And the uncle and his wife and son moved
into the inner courts where Lotus had been
and they took it for their own,
but this did not grieve Wang Lung unduly,
숙부와 숙모, 사촌은 연화가 머물던 안뜰로 들어가
그곳을 자신들의 처소로 삼았으나,
왕룽은 이것 때문에 속상해하지는 않았다.
for he saw clearly there were not many days of life left
for his uncle and when the idle old man was dead
Wang Lung's duty to that generation was over
숙부에게 남은 날이 얼마 되지 않음을 분명히 보았기 때문이었고,
게으른 그 노인이 죽고 나면
그 세대 어른에 대한 왕룽의 도리도 끝나는 셈이었기 때문이다.
and if the younger man did not do as he was told none
would blame Wang Lung if he cast him out.
또한 그 젊은 사촌 녀석이 말을 안 들어서 왕룽이 그를 쫓아낸다 한들
그 누구도 왕룽을 탓하지 않을 터였다.
Then Ching moved into the outer rooms
and the laborers with him, and Wang Lung and his son
and the fool lived in the middle rooms,
and Wang Lung hired a stout woman to be servant to them.
그 후 칭 서방은 바깥채로 처소를 옮겼고 일꾼들도 그와 함께 지냈으며,
왕룽과 그의 아들과 바보 딸은 가운뎃방에서 생활했다.
왕룽은 그들을 수종 들 튼튼한 여인 한 명을 하인으로 고용했다.
And Wang Lung slept and rested himself
and took no heed of anything
왕룽은 마냥 자고 휴식을 취하며 그 어떤 것에도 신경 쓰지 않았다
For he was suddenly very weary and the house was peaceful.
돌연 극심한 피로가 몰려왔는데, 집안은 평화로운 탓이기도 했다
There was none to trouble him,
그를 귀찮게 하는 이는 아무도 없었다.
for his youngest son was a silent lad who kept out
of his father's way and Wang Lung scarcely knew what he was,
so silent a lad was he.
막내아들은 아버지의 눈에 띄지 않게 지내는 말이 없는 아이였기에,
왕룽은 어떤 아이인지 거의 알지 못했다.
