But at last Wang Lung stirred himself to bid Ching find
a maid for his second son to wed.
며칠 뒤에 왕룽은 정신을 차려 둘째 아들과 혼인할 처녀를 알아보라고
칭 서방에게 말했다.
Now Ching grew old and withered and lean as a weed,
but there was the strength of an old and faithful dog in him yet,
although Wang Lung would no longer let him lift a hoe
in his hand or follow the oxen behind the plow.
이제 칭 서방은 늙고 시들어 잡초처럼 메말라 있었으니,
왕룽이 더 이상 그의 손에 괭이를 들지 못하게 하였고,
쟁기 뒤에서 소를 따르지 못하게 했음에도
그에게는 여전히 늙고 충직한 개처럼 쓸모가 있었고 힘이 되었다.
But still he was useful for he watched the labor of others
and he stood by when the grain was weighed and measured.
칭 서방은 다른 일꾼들의 노동을 감독하고
곡식의 무게를 달고 잴 때 곁에 서 있었기에 여전히 쓸모가 있었다.
So when he heard what Wang Lung wished him to do
he washed himself and put on his good blue cotton coat
and he went hither and thither to this village
and that and he looked at many maidens
and at last he came back and he said,
그리하여 왕룽이 자신에게 바라는 바를 듣자
그는 몸을 씻고 제일 좋은 푸른색 무명 저고리를 입고는
이 마을 저 마을로 사방을 돌아다니며 많은 처녀들을 살펴보았고,
마침내 돌아와 왕룽에게 말했다.
"Now would I lief have to choose a wife for myself
than for your son.
"자, 이제 차라리 당신의 아들보다는 내 아내를 고르는 편이
더 마음 편할 지경입니다.
But if it were I and I young,
there is a maid three villages away, a good, buxom,
careful maid with no fault except a ready laugh,
세 마을 떨어진 곳에 잘 웃는다는 것 외에는
아무런 흠이 없고 듬직하며 신중하고 착한 처녀가 한 명 있습니다.
and her father is willing and glad to be tied to your family
by his daughter.
그녀의 아버지는 당신의 가문과 연을 맺는 것을 기꺼이 원하고 있습니다.
And the dowry is good for these times, and he has-land.
지참금도 요새 시절치고는 넉넉하며, 그에게는 땅도 있습니다.
But I said I could give no promise until you gave it."
하지만 저는 당신이 허락하시기 전에는
확답을 드릴 수 없다고 말했습니다.“
It seemed to Wang Lung then that this was good enough
and he was anxious to be done with it
and so he gave his promise
왕룽에게 이 정도면 혼처 자리로 충분해 보였고
이 일을 얼른 매듭짓고 싶었기에 승락을 했다.
and when the papers were come he set his mark to them,
and he was relieved and he said,
그리고 혼인 문서가 오자 그는 서명을 했고, 마음이 홀가분해져 말했다.
"Now there is but one more son
and I am finished with all this wedding and marrying
and I am glad I am so near my peace."
"이제 아들 하나밖에 남지 않았으니
자식들 결혼 치르는 일도 끝이 나는구나.
이제부터 좀 편하게 됐으니 다행이로군.“
And when it was done and the wedding day set,
he rested and sat in the sun and slept even as
his father had done before him.
혼인문서가 교환되고 혼인 날짜가 잡히자, 그는 줄곧 쉬었다.
예전에 그의 아버지가 그랬던 것처럼 양지쪽에 앉아 낮잠을 잤다.
Then it seemed to Wang Lung that as Ching grew feeble with age
and since he himself grew heavy and drowsy with his food
칭 서방이나 왕룽 자신도 노환으로 부쩍 몸이 쇠약해져서,
식사 후에는 몸이 무거워지고 졸립기만 했다.
and his age and his third son was yet too young
for responsibility, that it would be well to rent
some of his farthest fields to others in the village.
셋째 아들은 아직 책임을 맡기에는 너무 어렸기에,
먼 곳에 있는 밭은 밭 가까이에 사는 마을 사람들에게
세놓는 편이 좋겠다고 생각했다.
This Wang Lung did, then,
and many of the men in the villages
near by came to Wang Lung to rent his land
and to become his tenants,
그리하여 왕룽은 그렇게 했고,
인근 마을의 많은 사내들이 왕룽의 땅을 세내
왕룽의 소작농이 되기 위해 그를 찾아왔다.
and the rent was decided upon, half of the harvest
to go to Wang Lung because he owned the land,
and half to the one who hired because of his labor,
and there were other things
which each must furnish besides:
소작료가 결정되었는데, 수확물의 절반은 왕룽에게 돌아가고,
나머지 절반은 노동의 대가로 세낸 사람에게 돌아가기로 했으며,
그 외에도 각자 제공해야 할 것들이 따로 있었다.
Wang Lung certain stores of manure and beancake
and of sesame refuse from his oil mill
after the sesame was ground,
and the tenant to reserve certain crops
for the use of Wang Lung's house.
왕룽은 일정량의 거름과 깻묵,
그리고 참깨를 짜고 남은 참깨 찌꺼기를 제공해야 했고,
소작농은 왕룽의 집에서 사용할 일정한 작물들을 대어주기로 했다.
And then, since there was not the need for his management
that there had been, Wang Lung went sometimes into the town
and slept in the court which he caused to be prepared for him,
그렇게 되자 농사일이 이전보다 휠씬 수월해졌다
왕룽은 간혹 성안으로 들어가 자신을 위해 마련해 두게 한
안뜰에서 잠을 자기도 했다.
but when day came he was back upon his land,
walking through the gate in the wall about the town
as soon as it was open after dawn came.
하지만 날이 밝으면 그는 다시 자신의 땅으로 돌아왔는데,
새벽이 지나 성문이 열리자마자 성벽의 대문을 통과해 걸어 나왔다.
And he smelled the fresh smell of the fields
and when he came to his own land he rejoiced in it.
그는 들판의 흙냄새를 맡았고 자신의 땅에 도달했을 때
그 안에서 기뻐했다.
Then as if the gods were kind for the once
and had prepared peace for his old age
마치 신들이 자비를 베풀어
왕룽의 노후를 위한 평화를 마련해 주기라도 한 듯 했다
his uncle's son, who grew restless
in the house now quiet and without women save
for the stout serving woman who was wife
to one of the laborers, this uncle's son heard of a war
to the north and he said to Wang Lung,
집안의 여자라고는 일꾼 아내인 튼튼한 침모 외에는 없어서
이제 조용해진 집안에서 안달이 나있던 숙부의 아들이
북쪽에서 전쟁이 일어났다는 소식을 듣고 왕룽에게 말했다.
"It is said there is a war to the north of us
and I will go and join it for something to do and to see.
This I will if you will give me silver to buy more clothes
and my bedding and a foreign firestick
to put over my shoulder."
"북쪽에서 전쟁이 일어났다고 하니, 구경도 할 겸 군대에나 가보렵니다
옷가지와 침구를 사고 어깨에 멜 서양식 총을 살 은전을 주신다면
그리하겠습니다."
