Then Wang Lung's heart leaped with pleasure
but he hid his pleasure artfully
and he demurred in pretense and he said,
왕룽은 가슴이 기쁨으로 세차게 뛰었으나
자신의 기쁨을 교묘하게 감추고는 짐짓 반대하는 척하며 말했다.
"Now you are the only son of my uncle
and after you there are none to carry on his body
and if you go to war what will happen?"
"자, 너는 내 숙부님의 외아들이 아니냐.
네 뒤로는 숙부님의 대를 이어갈 자가 아무도 없는데,
네가 전쟁터에 나간다면 어찌 되겠느냐?“
But the man answered, laughing,
"Well, and I am no fool and I will not stand anywhere that
my life is in danger. If there is to be a battle I will go away
until it is over.
그러자 조카는 웃으며 대답했다. "글쎄요, 저도 바보는 아니니
제 목숨이 위험한 곳에는 서 있지 않을 겁니다.
전투가 벌어지려 하면 그것이 끝날 때까지 멀리 피해 있을 생각입니다
I wish for a change and a little travel
and to see foreign parts before I am too old to do it."
더 나이들기 전에 기분 전환도 하고
약간의 여행도 하며 타향을 구경하고 싶을 뿐입니다.“
So Wang Lung gave him the silver readily and this time again
the giving was not hard so that he poured the money out
into the man's hand and he said to himself,
왕룽은 선뜻 은전을 내주었다. 이번에는 돈을 내어주는 것이
전혀 아깝지 않았기에 그는 조카의 손에 은전을 듬뿍 쏟아부어 주며
속으로 되뇌었다.
"Well, and if he likes it there is an end to this curse in my house,
for there is always a war somewhere in the nation."
'자, 이 녀석이 제 발로 나가겠다니
내 집안의 이 화근도 끝이 나는구나.
이 나라 어디에선가는 늘 전쟁이 벌어지고 있으니 말이다.‘
And again he said to himself, "Well, and he may even be killed,
if my good fortune holds, for sometimes in wars
there are those who die."
그는 속으로 또 생각했다. '그래, 내게 운이 따른다면
어쩌면 그 녀석이 죽을지도 모르는 일이지.
전쟁터에서는 간혹 죽는 자들도 나오는 법이니까.‘
He was in high good humor, then, although he concealed it,
and he comforted his uncle's wife when she wept a little
to hear of her son's going, and he gave her more opium
and lit her pipe for her and he said,
그리하여 그는 내심 무척 기분이 좋았음에도 이를 감추었고,
아들이 떠난다는 소식에 눈물을 조금 흘리는 숙모를 달래주며
그녀에게 더 많은 아편을 대주고 파이프에 불까지 붙여주며 말했다.
"Doubtless he will rise to be a military official
and honor will come to us all through him."
"틀림없이 조카가 군관으로 출세하여
우리 가문에 명예를 안겨다 줄 것입니다.“
Then at last there was peace,
그리하여 마침내 집안에는 평화가 찾아왔다.
for there were only the two old sleeping ones in the house
in the country besides his own, and in the house in the town
the hour grew near for the birth of Wang Lung's grandson.
시골집에는 잠만 자는 두 노인네뿐이었고,
성안의 집에서는
왕룽의 첫손주가 태어날 시간이 다가오고 있었기 때문이다
Now Wang Lung, as this hour drew near,
stayed more and more in the house in town
왕룽은 그 시간이 다가옴에 따라
점점 더 성안의 집에 머무르는 날이 많아졌다
and he walked about the courts
and he could never have done with musing
on what had happened,
그는 안뜰들을 거닐며 일어난 일들에 대해
끝없이 깊은 생각에 잠겼고,
and he could never have his fill of wonder
at this, that here in these courts
where the great family of Hwang had once lived now he lived
with his wife and his sons and their wives
and now a child was to be born of a third generation.
예전에 황 씨 대가문이 살던 바로 이 안뜰에서
이제 자신이 처자와 아들들, 그리고 며느리들과 함께 살고 있으며
이제 삼대째가 되는 아이가 태어나려 한다는 이 사실에 대한
경이로움을 느꼈다.
And his heart swelled within him
so that nothing was too good for his money to buy
그는 마음이 흐믓하여 물건을 사는데 돈을 아끼지 않았다
and he bought lengths of satin and of silk for them
all for it looked ill to see common cotton robes
upon the carved chairs and about the carved tables
of southern blackwood,
남방 흑단으로 만든 조각 탁자와 조각 의자를 사들였고,
흔한 무명옷이 걸쳐져 있는 것은 보기에 좋지 않았기에,
가족의 옷들은 공단과 비단 천으로 바꾸게 했다
and he bought lengths of good blue and black cotton
for the slaves so not one of them needed to wear
a garment ragged.
또한 종들을 위해서도 좋은 푸른색과 검은색 무명천을 넉넉히 사주어,
그들 중 누구도 누더기 옷을 입을 필요가 없게 만들었다.
This he did, and he was pleased when the friends
that his eldest son had found in the town came
into the courts and proud that they should see all that was.
왕룽은 이처럼 했고, 장남이 성안에서 사귄 친구들을 데리고 와
집구경을 시킬 때면 무척 기뻐했으며
그들이 이곳의 모든 풍경을 보게 되는 것에 자부심을 느꼈다.
