Then at last when it seemed to him it must soon be night,
so long he had waited, Lotus came in waddling upon
her small feet because of her great weight
and leaning upon Cuckoo,
그리하여 마침내, 너무나 오래 기다려 곧 밤이 되겠다고 생각될 즈음
연화가 제 육중한 몸무게 때문에 작은 발로 뒤뚱거리며
구쿠에게 기대어 들어왔다.
and she laughed and said loudly,
"Well, and there is a son in the house of your son,
and both mother and son are alive.
I have seen the child and it is fair and sound."
그녀는 웃음을 터뜨리며 큰 소리로 말했다.
"자, 당신 손자가 태어났어요. 산모와 아들 모두 무사하답니다.
내가 아이를 보았는데 곱고 건강하더군요.“
Then Wang Lung laughed also and he rose
and he slapped his hands together and laughed again
and he said,
그러자 왕룽 역시 웃음을 터뜨렸고, 자리에서 일어나 손벽을 치며
다시 한번 웃고는 말했다.
"Well, and I have been sitting here like a man
with his own first son coming and not knowing
what to do of this and that and afraid of everything."
“허, 내가 내 첫아들을 얻을 때처럼 이리저리 어찌할 바를 모른 채
모든 것을 두려워하며 여기 우두커니 앉아 있었구려.“
And then when Lotus had gone on to her room
and he sat again he fell to musing and he thought to himself,
이윽고 연화가 제 방으로 들어가고 왕룽이 다시 자리에 앉았을 때
깊은 생각에 잠겼다. 그는 속으로 생각했다.
"Well, and I did not fear like this
when that other one bore her first, my son."
'오란이 내 첫아들을 낳을 때는 이처럼 두려워하지 않았거늘.‘
And he sat silent and musing and he remembered
within himself that day and how she had gone alone
into the small dark room and how alone she had borne him sons
and again sons and daughters
그는 묵묵히 앉아 깊은 생각에 잠긴 채,
오란이 홀로 작고 어두운 방으로 들어가
얼마나 외롭게 사내아이를 낳고 또 사내아이와 딸들을 낳아주었는지,
and she bore them silently,
and how she had come to the fields
and worked beside him again.
그 모든 아이들을 신음소리도 내지 않고 해산을 했고,
그리고 그런 그녀가 들판으로 나와
다시 자신의 곁에서 함께 일했던 모습도 떠올렸다.
And here was this one, now the wife of his son,
who cried like a child with her pains,
and who had all the slaves running in the house,
and her husband there by her door.
그런데 이제 그의 며느리는 산고 때문에 어린아이처럼 울부짖고 있었고,
집안의 모든 종들을 분주히 뛰게 만들었으며
자기의 남편마저도 문가에 세워두고 있었다.
And he remembered as one remembers a dream long past
how O-lan rested from her work a little while
and fed the child richly and the white rich milk ran
out of her breast and spilled upon the ground.
그리고 그는 먼 옛날의 꿈을 기억해 내듯,
오란이 일하다가 잠시 쉬면서 아이에게 젖을 듬뿍 먹이던 모습과
그녀의 유방에서 하얗고 진한 젖이 흘러나와
땅 위로 떨어지던 모습을 기억해 냈다.
And this seemed too long past ever to have been.
그리고 이 일은 있었다는 것이 믿어지지 않을 정도로
너무나 아득한 과거의 일처럼 느껴졌다.
Then his son came in smiling and important and he said loudly,
"The man child is born, my father,
and now we must find a woman to nurse him with her breasts,
그때 장남이 미소를 머금은 채 위풍당당하게 들어와 큰 소리로 말했다.
"사내아이가 태어났습니다, 아버님.
이제 제 아이에게 젖을 먹여줄 유모를 한 명 구해야겠습니다.
for I will not have my wife's beauty spoiled with the nursing
and her strength sapped with it.
어린에에게 젖을 먹이면 제 아내의 미모가 망가질 수도 있고,
기력이 쇠해진다고 하니, 저는 그런 것을 원치 않기 때문입니다.
None of the women of position in the town do so."
성안의 지체 높은 가문 여인들은 아무도 직접 젖을 먹이지 않습니다.“
And Wang Lung said sadly,
although why he was sad he did not know,
그러자 왕룽은 자신이 왜 서글픈지 알 수 없었으나, 서글프게 대답했다.
"Well, and if it must be so, let it be so,
if she cannot nurse her own child."
"그래, 정 그래야만 한다면 그리하도록 하거라.
어미가 제 자식에게 직접 젖을 먹이지 못한다면 말이다.“
