When the child was a month old Wang Lung's son,
its father, gave the birth feast,
아이가 태어난 지 한 달이 되었을 때,
아이의 아버지인 왕룽의 장남은 성대하게 백일잔치를 열었다.
and to it he invited guests from the town
and his wife's father and mother,
and all the great of the town.
장남은 이 잔치에 성안의 손님들과 그의 장인, 장모,
그리고 성안의 지체 높은 이들을 모두 초대했다.
And he had dyed scarlet many hundreds of hens' eggs,
and these he gave to every guest
and to any who sent guests,
그는 수백 개의 달걀을 붉게 물들여
모든 하객과 축하 선물을 보내온 이들에게 나누어 주었다.
and there was feasting and joy through the house,
for the child was a goodly fat boy
and he had passed his tenth day
and lived and this was a fear gone, and they all rejoiced.
아이가 포동포동하고 건강한 사내아이인 데다,
태어난 지 열흘째를 무사히 넘겨 살아남았으니 한시름 놓은 터였기에
집안에는 잔치와 기쁨이 가득했고 모두가 즐거워했다.
And when the birth feast was over Wang Lung's son came
to his father and he said,
잔치가 끝나자 장남이 아버지를 찾아와 말했다.
"Now that there are the three generations in this house,
we should have the tablets of ancestors that great families have,
and we should set the tablets up to be worshipped
at the feast days for we are an established family now."
"이제 이 집에 삼대가 모였으니, 대가문이 그러하듯
우리도 조상들의 위패를 모셔야겠습니다.
우리는 이제 명문가로 자리 잡았으니
명절이면 위패를 모셔놓고 제사를 지내야 마땅합니다.“
This pleased Wang Lung greatly, and so he ordered it
and so it was carried out,
이 말은 왕룽을 무척 흡족하게 만들었기에 그대로 하게했고,
일은 막힘없이 실행되었다.
and there in the great hall the row of tablets was set up,
his grandfather's name on one and then his father's,
and the spaces left empty for Wang Lung's name
and his son's when they should die.
대청에는 위패들이 한 줄로 나란히 모셔졌는데,
한 곳에는 그의 할아버지 이름이,
그다음에는 그의 아버지 이름이 적혔고,
왕룽과 그의 아들이 죽은 뒤에 채워질 공간은 비워져 있었다.
And Wang Lung's son bought an incense urn
and set it before the tablets.
그리고 장남은 향로를 사다가 위패 앞에 놓아두었다.
When this was finished Wang Lung remembered
the red robe he had promised the goddess of mercy
and so he went to the temple to give the money for it.
이 일이 끝나자 왕룽은 관세음보살에게 약속했던 붉은 도포가 생각나
사찰로 가서 시주할 돈을 건넸다.
And then, on his way back,
as if the gods cannot bear to give freely
and not hide sting somewhere in the gift
one came running from the harvest fields to tell him
신들은 거저 베푸는 법이 하나도 없고
신들의 선물 속에는 어떻게든 가시를 숨겨두기라도 하나보다.
절에서 집으로 돌아오는 길에, 추수로 한창 바쁜 들판에서
누군가 숨을 헐떡이며 달려와 전갈을 보내왔다.
that Ching lay dying suddenly and had asked
if Wang Lung would come to see him die.
칭 서방이 갑자기 죽어가고 있으며
왕룽이 와서 임종을 지켜봐 줄 수 있는지 묻고 있다는 소식이었다.
Wang Lung hearing the panting runner, cried angrily,
숨 가쁘게 달려온 사람의 말을 들은 왕룽은 분통을 터뜨리며 외쳤다.
"Now I suppose that accursed pair in the temple are jealous
because I gave a red robe to a town goddess
and I suppose they do not know they have no power
over childbirth and only over land."
"당집에 있는 그 저주받을 두 토지신들이,
내가 관세음보살에게 붉은 도포를 시주했다고 질투를 부리는 게로구나.
저들은 애 낳는 것에는 아무런 힘이 없고
오직 땅만을 돌볼 뿐이라는 사실을 제놈들이 모르는 모양이다.“
And although his noon meal stood ready for him to eat
he would not take up his chopsticks,
마침 점심상이 다 차려져 있었으나 그는 젓가락도 들려 하지 않았다.
although Lotus called loudly to him to wait
until after the evening sun came; he would not stay for her,
and he went out.
연화가 저녁 해가 진 뒤에 가라며 큰 소리로 그를 붙잡았으나,
그는 그녀를 뿌리치고 밖으로 뛰쳐나갔다.
Then when Lotus saw he did not heed her she sent a slave
after him with an umbrella of oiled paper,
but so fast did Wang Lung run that the stout maid had difficulty
in holding the umbrella over his head.
연화는 왕룽이 자신의 말을 듣지 않고 나가는 왕룽을 보고
종을 시켜서 우산을 들려 뒤따라 보냈으나,
왕룽이 어찌나 빨리 달리는지 튼튼한 하녀가
그의 머리 위로 우산을 받쳐 들고 따라가기조차 벅찰 지경이었다.
Wang Lung went at once to the room where
Ching had been laid and he called out loudly to anyone,
"Now how did all this come about?"
왕룽은 칭이 누워 있는 방으로 곧장 들어가 큰 소리로 외쳤다.
"대체 어쩌다가 일이 이 지경이 된 거야?“
The room was full of laborers crowding about
and they answered in confusion and haste,
방 안은 일꾼들로 가득 차 웅성거리고 있었는데,
그들은 당황하여 다급하게 대답했다.
"He would work himself at the threshing . . ."
"칭 어르신께서 마당에서 직접 타작을 하시겠다고 . . ."
"We told him not at his age . . ."
"저희가 그 연세에는 안 된다고 말렸습니다만 . . .“
"There was a laborer who is newly hired . . ."
"이번에 새로 들어온 일꾼 놈이 하나 있는데 . . .“
"He could not hold the flail rightly
and Ching would show him . . ."
"그 녀석이 도리깨질을 제대로 하지 못하자
칭 어르신께서 시범을 보여주려 하셨습니다 . . ."
"It is labor too hard for an old man . . ."
"노인에게는 너무 고된 노동이었습니다 . . .“
Then Wang Lung called out in a terrible voice,
"Bring me this laborer!"
그러자 왕룽은 목이 터져라 소리쳤다.
"그 일꾼 놈을 내 앞으로 데려오너라!“
And they pushed the man in front before Wang Lung,
and he stood there trembling
사람들이 그 사내를 왕룽 앞으로 밀쳐냈고,
사내는 맨무릎을 부들부들 떨며 서 있었다.
and his bare knees knocking together, a great, ruddy,
coarse, country lad, with his teeth sticking out in a shelf
over his lower lip and round dull eyes like an ox's eyes.
그 머슴은 체구가 듬직하고 혈색이 좋으며
투박한 시골뜨기 청년이었는데,
이빨은 아랫입술 위로 덧니가 튀어나와 있었고
동그랗고 멍청한 눈은 꼭 황소의 눈 같았다.
But Wang Lung had no pity on him.
하지만 왕룽은 그에게 자비를 베풀지 않았다.
He slapped the lad on both his cheeks
and he took the umbrella from the slave's hand
and he beat the lad about the head,
그는 청년의 양 뺨을 후려쳤고 여종의 손에서 우산을 빼앗아
청년의 머리를 마구 두들겨 팼다.
and none dared stop him lest his anger go into his blood
and at his age poison him.
나이가 든 왕롱의 분노가 핏속으로 퍼지면 몸에 독이 될까 봐
그 누구도 감히 그를 말리지 못했다.
And the bumpkin stood it humbly, blubbering a little
and sucking his teeth.
시골뜨기는 흐느껴 울며 덧니만 연방 빨 뿐 묵묵히 매를 맞았다.
Then Ching moaned from the bed where he lay
and Wang Lung threw down the umbrella and he cried out,
"Now this one will die while I am beating a fool!"
그때 침상에 누워 있던 칭 서방이 신음 소리를 내자,
왕룽은 우산을 내팽개치며 외쳤다.
"내가 이 미련한 놈을 때리는 동안에 저 사람이 숨을 거두겠구나!“
