And he sat down beside Ching and took his hand and held it,
왕룽은 칭 서방 곁에 앉아 그의 손을 잡아주었다.
and it was as light and dry
and small as a withered oak leaf
and it was not possible to believe that
any blood ran through it,
그 손은 말라비틀어진 떡갈나무 잎사귀처럼 가볍고 메말라 있었으며,
어찌나 건조하고 가볍던지 도무지 그 안으로 피가 흐르고 있다고는
믿기지 않을 정도였다.
so dry and light and hot it was.
그만큼 메마르고 가볍고 또 뜨거운 손이었다
But Ching's face, which was pale and yellow every day,
was now dark and spotted with his scanty blood,
평상시에는 창백하고 누렇던 칭 서방의 얼굴은 이제 검은 빛이 돌고,
얼마 안되는 피가 여기저기에 몰려 반점을 만들고 있었다.
and his half-opened eyes were filmed and blind
and his breath came in gusts.
반쯤 뜬 그의 눈은 안개가 낀 듯 앞을 보지 못했으며
거친 숨을 몰아쉬고 있었다.
Wang Lung leaned down to him and said loudly in his ear,
"Here am I
and I will buy you a coffin second to my father's only!"
왕룽은 몸을 굽히고 그의 귀에 대고 큰 소리로 말했다.
"나 여기 있소.
내 아버님의 관 못지않은 좋은 관을 당신에게 사드리겠소!"
But Ching's ear were filled with his blood,
and if he heard Wang Lung he made no sign,
but he only lay there panting and dying and so he died.
하지만 칭 서방의 귀는 이미 피로 가득 차 있었기에,
왕룽의 말을 들었다 한들 아무런 기척도 내지 못한 채
그저 헐떡이다가 이윽고 숨을 거두었다.
When he was dead Wang Lung leaned over him
and he wept as he had not wept when his own father died,
칭 서방이 죽자 왕룽은 그 앞에 엎드려 자기 아버지가 돌아가셨을 때도
흘리지 않았던 눈물을 흘리며 울었다.
and he ordered a coffin of the best kind,
and he hired priests for the funeral
and he walked behind wearing white mourning.
왕룽은 가장 좋은 관을 주문했고 장례를 위해 승려들을 불렀으며,
흰 상복을 입고 상여 뒤를 따랐다.
He made his eldest son, even, wear white bands
on his ankles as though a relative had died,
심지어 장남에게도 친척이 죽기나 한 것처럼
흰 띠를 두르게 했는데,
although his son complained and said,
"He was only an upper servant, and it is not suitable so
to mourn for a servant."
아들은 "그분은 우리 집 상머슴에 불과했는데,
하인을 위해 이처럼 상을 치르는 것은 격에 맞지 않습니다"라며
불평을 늘어놓았다.
But Wang Lung compelled him for three days.
하지만 왕룽은 사흘 동안 아들에게 이를 강제했다.
And if Wang Lung had had his way wholly,
he would have buried Ching inside the earthen wall
where his father and O-lan were buried.
만약 왕룽이 전적으로 제 맘대로 할 수만 있었더라면,
그는 아버님과 오란이 묻힌 가족 묘지 안쪽에
칭을 묻어주었을 터였다.
But his sons would not have it and they complained and said,
"Shall our mother and grandfather lie with a servant?
And must we also in our time?"
하지만 아들들이 모두 이것만은 결코 용납하려 하지 않았고, 그들은
"우리 어머니와 할아버님께서 하인과 함께 누우셔야 한단 말입니까?
장차 저희 대에도 그래야 합니까?"라며 불평을 늘어놓았다.
Then Wang Lung, because he could not contend with them
and because at his age he would have peace in his house,
buried Ching at the entrance to the wall
그리하여 왕룽은 아들들과 다툴 수가 없었고
집안의 평화를 지키고 싶었기에,
가족묘지 입구 쪽에 칭 서방을 묻어주었다.
and he was comforted with what he had done, and he said,
"Well, and it is meet,
for he has ever stood guardian to me against evil."
왕룽은 자신이 한 일에 위안을 얻으며 말했다.
"그래, 이만했으면 됐어. 칭은 평생 나를 지켜 주었으니 말이다."
And he directed his sons that when he himself died
he should lie nearest to Ching.
그리고 그는 자신이 죽으면 칭 서방과 가장 가까운 곳에 눕혀달라고
아들들에게 당부했다.
Then less than ever did Wang Lung go to see his lands,
because now Ching was gone it stabbed him to go alone
and he was weary of labor and his bones ached
when he walked over the rough fields alone.
그 후로 왕룽은 자신의 땅을 보러 가는 일이 한층 더 드물어졌는데,
이제 칭 서방마저 가고 없으니 홀로 들판으로 나가는 것이
너무나 적적해졌을 뿐 아니라 일하기가 거북해졌고,
홀로 거친 들판을 걸을 때면 뼈마디가 쑤셔왔기 때문이었다.
So he rented out all his land that he could
and men took it eagerly, for it was known to be good land.
그래서 그는 자신이 세놓을 수 있는 모든 땅을 소작으로 내주었고,
그의 땅이 비옥하다는 것이 널리 소문이 나 있었기에
사람들이 앞다투어 땅을 얻어갔다.
But Wang Lung would never talk of selling a foot of any piece,
and he would only rent it for an agreed price
for a year at a time.
하지만 왕룽은 단 한 자의 땅이라도 파는 일에 대해서는
절대 입을 열지 않았고, 소작도 1년 계약으로 하였다
Thus he felt it all his own and still in his hand.
그렇게 해야 그 땅이 아직 그의 소유라고 실감할 수 있을 것 같았고,
그래야 자기 땅이 자기 손안에 있다고 느낄 수 있었다.
And he appointed one of the laborers and his wife
and children to live in the country house and to care for
the two old opium dreamers.
그리고 그는 일꾼 중 한 명과 그의 아내, 자식들을 시골집에 살게 하여
아편 꿈을 꾸고 있는 두 숙부 내외를 보살피도록 조치했다.
Then seeing his youngest son's wistful eyes, he said,
"Well, and you may come with me into the town,
이어 막내아들의 아쉬워하는 눈빛을 본 왕룽이 말했다.
"그래, 너도 나와 함께 성안으로 가자꾸나.
and I will take my fool with me too,
and she can live in my court where I am.
내 가련한 바보 딸도 함께 데려가서
내가 묵는 안뜰에서 같이 지내게 하겠다.
It is too lonely for you now that Ching is gone,
칭 서방이 가고 없으니 이제 네게도 이곳이 너무 쓸쓸할 게다.
and with him gone, I am not sure that they will be kind
to the poor fool seeing there will be none to tell
if she is beaten or ill fed.
그리고 그 사람이 없으니, 아이가 매를 맞거나 밥을 굶어도
이를 말해줄 이가 아무도 없어
사람들이 바보 딸에게 모질게 굴지 않을까 염려되는구나.
And there is no one now to teach you concerning the land,
now that Ching is gone."
게다가 이제 칭 서방이 가고 없으니,
네게 땅에 대해 가르쳐줄 사람도 없지 않느냐.“
So Wang Lung took his youngest son and his fool with him
and thereafter he came scarcely at all for a long time
to the house on his land.
그리하여 왕룽은 막내아들과 바보 딸을 데리고 성 안 집으로 갔고,
그 후로 아주 오랜 시간 동안
자신의 땅에 있는 집에는 거의 발길을 하지 않았다.
