As quickly as he was able, then,
he bought tables and chairs from Soochow, carved and wrought,
and he bought curtains of red silk to hang in the doorways
and he bought vases large and small
and he bought scrolls to hang on the wall
and as many as he could of beautiful women,
장남은 자신이 할 수 있는 한 가장 신속하게 움직여,
조각하고 정교하게 다듬은 탁자와 의자들을 소주에서 사들였고,
방문마다 걸어둘 붉은 비단 커튼을 샀으며,
크고 작은 화병들과 벽에 걸 미인도 족자들을 사들였다.
and he bought curious rocks to make rockeries in the courts
such as he had seen in southern parts,
and thus he busied himself for many days.
또한 남쪽 지방에서 보았던 것과 같은 돌동산을 정원에 만들기 위해
기이하게 생긴 돌들을 샀으며,
그는 이렇게 여러 날 동안 분주히 움직였다
With all this coming and going he had to pass many times
through the outer courts, even every day,
and he could not pass among the common people
without sticking his nose up and he could not bear them,
이 모든 물건들이 오고 가는 과정에서
그는 매일같이 바깥뜰을 수없이 지나쳐야 했는데,
가난한 사람들 사이를 지날 때면
코를 치켜들지 않고는 지나가지 못할 정도로 그들을 견뎌내지 못했다.
so that the people who lived there laughed at him
after he had passed and they said,
"He has forgotten the smell of the manure in the dooryard
on his father's farm!"
그래서 그곳에 살던 사람들은 그가 지나가고 나면 비웃으며 말했다.
"저 녀석은 제 아버지 농장 마당에 가득하던
거름 냄새를 아주 잊어버렸구나!“
But still none dared to speak thus as he passed,
for he was a rich man's son.
하지만 그가 지나갈 때는 아무도 감히 그렇게 말하지 못했으니,
그가 부잣집 아들이었기 때문이다.
When the feast came when rents are decided upon
these common people found that the rent for the rooms
and the courts where they lived had been greatly raised,
새롭게 방세와 집세를 정하는 날이 오자,
이 가난한 사람들은 자신들이 사는 방과 뜰의 집세가
터무니없이 올랐다는 사실을 알게 되었다.
because another would pay that much for them,
and they had to move away.
다른 이가 비싼 집세를 내겠다고 나섰기 때문이었고,
결국 그들은 부득이 이사를 가야만 했다.
Then they knew it was Wang Lung's eldest son
who had done this,
사람들은 이것이 왕룽의 조작이라는 것을 잘 알고 있었다
although he was clever and said nothing and did it
all by letters to the son of the old Lord Hwang
in foreign parts,
장남은 영악하게 아무 말도 하지 않고
타향에 있는 옛 황 씨 염감의 아들에게 편지를 보내
이 모든 일을 처리했다는 것을 가난한 사람들은 알아챘다.
and this son of the Old Lord cared for nothing
except where and how he could get the most money
for the old house.
옛 상전의 아들은 어떻게 해야
그 오래된 집에서 가장 많은 돈을 쥐어 잡을 수 있을지에만
온 정신을 쏟고 있었기 때문이다.
The common people had to move, then,
and they moved complaining and cursing
because a rich man could do as he would
이라하여 가난한 사람들은 결국 이사를 가야만 했고,
부자는 제멋대로 할 수 있다는 사실에
불평하고 저주를 퍼부으며 이사해 갔다.
and they packed their tattered possessions
and went away swelling with anger and muttering that
one day they would come back even as the poor do come back
when the rich are too rich.
그들은 누더기 같은 가재도구를 챙겨 들고 분통을 터뜨리며 떠나갔고,
부자가 너무 잘 살게되면 가난한 자들에게 당하는 일이 있듯이
자신들도 언젠가는 반드시 돌아올 것이라며 중얼거렸다.
But all this Wang Lung did not hear,
since he was in the inner courts and seldom came forth,
since he slept and ate and took his ease as his age came on,
and he left the thing in the hands of his eldest son.
하지만 안뜰에 머물며 좀체로 밖으로 나오지 않던 왕룽은
나이가 들어감에 따라 편히 잠 자고 먹고 휴식을 취하고 있었기에
이 모든 소리를 듣지 못했고,
모든 일을 전적으로 장남의 손에 맡겨두고 있었다.
And his son called carpenters and clever masons
and they repaired the rooms and the moon gates
between the courts that the common people had ruined
with their coarse ways of living,
장남은 목수들과 솜씨 좋은 석공들을 불러
가난한 사람들이 거친 살면서 망쳐놓았던
방들과 뜰 사이에 있는 만월문을 보수했고,
and he built again the pools
and he bought flecked and golden fish to put in them.
연못들을 다시 고쳐서 그 안에 넣을 알록달록한 금붕어들을 샀다.
And after it was all finished and made beautiful
as far as he knew beauty, he planted lotus
and lilies in the pools,
and the scarlet-berried bamboo of India
and everything he could remember
he had seen in southern parts.
모든 것이 끝나고 장남이 아는 한 가장 아름답게 꾸며진 뒤,
그는 연못에 연꽃과 백합을 심었고,
붉은 열매를 맺는 인도 대나무를 비롯해
자신이 남쪽 지방에서 보았다고 기억해 낼 수 있는 모든 것을 심었다.
And his wife came out to see what he had done
and the two of them walked about
through every court and room
그의 아내도 나와서 그가 해놓은 일을 살펴보았고,
두 사람은 뜰과 방을 함께 걸어 다녔다.
and she saw this and that still lacking,
and he listened with great heed to all she said
that he might do it.
그녀가 이것저것 여전히 부족한 것들을 짚어내면,
그는 그녀가 한 모든 말을 귀담아듣고 그대로 실행하려 애썼다.
Then people on the streets of the town heard of all that
Wang Lung's eldest son did, and they talked of what was being
done in the great house, now that a rich man lived there again.
이윽고 성안 거리의 사람들은
왕룽의 장남이 벌인 모든 일에 대해 전해 들었고,
이제 그 대저택에 다시 부자가 살게 되어
어떤 일들이 벌어지고 있는지에 대해 입을 모았다.
And people who had said Wang The Farmer now said
Wang The Big Man or Wang The Rich Man.
그리고 예전에 '농사꾼 왕룽'이라 부르던 사람들은
이제 '왕 대인' 혹은 '왕 부자'라고 불렀다.
The money for all these doings
had gone out of Wang Lung's hand bit by bit,
이 모든 일에 들어가는 비용은
왕룽의 손에서 조금씩 빠져나갔기에,
그는 돈이 언제 나갔는지조차 거의 알지 못했다.
so that he scarcely knew when it went, for the eldest son came
and said, "I need a hundred pieces of silver here"; or he said,
"There is a good gate which needs only an odd bit of silver
to mend it as good as new"; or he said,
“There is a place where a long table should stand."
장남는 늘 와서 "여기 은전 백 닢이 필요합니다",
혹은 "저 대문은 새것처럼 고치는 데 은전 몇 닢만 있으면 되겠는데요",
혹은 "긴 탁자가 놓여야 할 자리가 있습니다"라고 말했다.
And Wang Lung gave him the silver bit by bit,
as he sat smoking and resting in his court,
그러면 왕룽은 안뜰에 앉아 담배를 피우고 휴식을 취하고 있다가
은전을 조금씩 내주었다.
for the silver came in easily from the land at every harvest
and whenever he needed it, and so he gave it easily.
매 추수 때마다 땅에서 은전이 수월하게 들어왔고
그것이 필요할 때면 언제든 들어왔기에,
그 역시 돈을 기꺼이 쉽게 내주었다
