He would not have known how much he gave had not
his second son come into his court one morning
when the sun was scarcely over the wall and he said,
만약 어느 날 아침, 해가 성벽 위로 채 떠오르기도 전에
둘째 아들이 안뜰로 찾아와 이렇게 말하지 않았더라면,
왕룽은 자신이 얼마나 많은 돈을 주었는지 알지 못했을 터였다.
"My father, is there to be no end to all this pouring out of money
and need we live in a palace?
"아버님, 언제까지 돈을 물 쓰듯 하시려는 겁니까?
우리가 꼭 궁궐 같은 곳에서 살아야 할 필요가 있습니까?
So much money lent out at twenty per cent would have brought
in many pounds of silver, and what is the use of all these pools
and flowering trees that bear no fruit even,
and all these idle, blooming lilies?"
이 많은 돈을 이리저리 연 2할 이자로 빌려주었더라면
벌써 수많은 은전을 벌어들였을 텐데, 이따위 연못을 파고,
열매조차 맺지 못하는 꽃나무들 심고,
이 한가롭게 피어 있는 백합들이 다 무슨 소용이란 말입니까?“
Wang Lung saw that these two brothers
would quarrel over this yet, and he said hastily,
lest he never have any peace,
"Well, and it is all in honor of your wedding."
왕룽은 이 일로 두 형제가 앞으로 다투게 되리라는 것을 직감했고,
또 집안의 평화가 깨질까 봐 황급히 말했다.
"글쎄, 이 모든 것은 네 혼례를 빛내주기 위함이란다.“
Then the young man answered, smiling crookedly
and without any meaning of mirth,
그러자 둘째 아들은 즐거운 기색이라곤 전혀 없이
삐딱하게 입가에 미소를 지으며 대답했다.
"It is an odd thing for the wedding to cost ten times
as much as the bride.
"혼례 비용이 신부 값의 열 배나 든다는 것은 참으로 웃기는 일입니다.
Here is our inheritance,
that should be divided between us when you are dead,
being spent now for nothing but the pride of my elder brother."
장차 아버님께서 돌아가셨을 때 우리가 나누어야 할 우리의 유산이,
지금은 제 형의 허영을 위해 허투루 쓰이고 있을 뿐입니다.“
And Wang Lung knew the determination of this second son
of his and he knew he would never have done with him
if talk began, so he said hastily,
왕룽은 이 둘째 아들의 단호한 성미를 잘 알고 있었고
한번 이야기가 시작되면 결코 끝이 나지 않으리라는 것을 알았기에
황급히 말했다.
"Well—well—I will have an end to it—I will speak to your brother
and I will shut my hand. It is enough. You are right!"
"그래, 그래, 이제 그만 끝내도록 하마.
네 형에게 말해서 이 이상은 돈 애길 못하게 하겠다.
그러면 되겠지. 네 말이 옳다!“
The young man had brought out a paper on which was written
a list of all the moneys his brother had spent,
and Wang Lung saw the length of the list and he said quickly,
둘째 아들은 제 형이 쓴 모든 돈의 목록이 적힌 종이 한 장을 꺼내 들었고,
왕룽은 그 목록의 길이를 보더니 당황해서 얼른 말했다.
"I have not eaten yet and at my age I am faint in the morning
until I eat. Another time for this."
"내가 아직 아침밥을 먹지 못했다.
내 나이가 되면 아침에 음식을 먹기 전에는 기운이 없는 법이다.
이 일은 다음에 얘기하자꾸나."
And he turned and went into his own room
and so dismissed his second son.
그러고는 몸을 돌려 제 방으로 들어가 둘째 아들을 물러가게 했다.
But he spoke that same evening to his eldest son, saying,
"Have done with all this painting and polishing. It is enough.
We are, after all, country folk."
왕룽은 그 날 저녁 장남에게 말하기를,
"집 손보는 작업을 이제 그만 끝내거라. 이제 충분하다.
우리는 결국 촌사람들 아니더냐"라고 했다.
But the young man answered proudly,
"That we are not. Men in the town are beginning to call
us the great family Wang. It is fitting that we live somewhat
suitably to that name,
그러나 장남은 굽히지 않고 대답했다. "우리는 그렇지 않습니다.
성안 사람들은 이제 우리를 '왕씨 가문의 명문가'라 부르기 시작했습니다.
우리가 그 이름에 어느 정도 걸맞게 사는 것이 당연한 일이며,
and if my brother cannot see beyond the meaning of silver
for its own sake, I and my wife, we will uphold
the honor of the name."
제 동생이 돈 그 자체의 의미 너머를 보지 못한다면
저와 제 아내가 가문의 명예를 받들어 지키겠습니다.“
Now Wang Lung had not known that men so called his house,
for as he grew older he went seldom even to the tea shops
and no more to the grain markets since
there was his second son to do his business there for him,
왕룽은 사람들이 자신의 집안을 그렇게 부른다는 사실을 미처 몰랐는데,
나이가 들어감에 따라 찻집조차 잘 가지 않았고
곡물 시장에는 그의 사업을 대신 처리해 줄
둘째 아들이 있었기에 더 이상 나가지 않았기 때문이었다.
but it pleased him secretly and so he said,
"Well, even great families are from the land
and rooted in the land."
하지만 그 소리는 속으로 그를 흡족하게 만들었기에 그는 말했다.
"글쎄, 아무리 대갓집이라 할지라도 우린 농부 출신이니
땅에서 비롯된 것이며 땅에 뿌리를 두고 살아가야 하는 법이다.“
But the young man answered smartly,
"Yes, but they do not stay there.
They branch forth and bear flowers and fruits."
그러자 청년은 재치 있게 대답했다. "그렇습니다만,
그저 땅에 뿌리만 박고 있기만 해서는 대갓집이 될 수 없어요.
사방으로 가지를 뻗어 꽃을 피우고 열매를 맺게 하는 것이
대가다운 행동이지요.“
Wang Lung would not have his son answering him too easily
and quickly like this, so he said,
왕룽은 아들이 이처럼 자신에게 너무 쉽고 빠르게
말대꾸하는 것이 못마땅했다. 그래서 그는 말했다
"I have said what I have said.
Have done with pouring out silver.
And roots, if they are to bear fruits,
must be kept well in the soil of the land."
"내 의견은 아까 말한 그대로이다.
은전을 쏟아붓는 짓은 이제 그만 끝내거라.
그리고 뿌리라는 것도 열매를 맺으려면
땅의 흙 속에 단단히 박혀 있어야 하는 법이다.“
