Then since evening came on,
he wished his son would go away out of this court
and into his own.
어느덧 저녁이 찾아왔기에,
왕룽은 장남이 자기 앞에서 벗어나
자기 있는 곳으로 가주기를 바랐다.
He wished the young man to go away
and leave him in peace in the twilight and alone.
왕룽은 황혼 속에서 자신을 홀로 평온하게 내버려 두기를 바랐다.
But there was no peace for him with this son of his.
하지만 이 아들과 같이 있으면 그에게 평화 같은 것은 없었다.
This son was willing to obey his father now
for he was satisfied in the rooms and the courts,
at least for the time, and he had done what he would do,
but he began again,
장남도 이제 방들과 안뜰을 다 꾸몄기에
적어도 당분간은 만족하고 있었고
제 하고 싶은 대로 다 해놓았으므로
아버지의 말에 순종할 법도 했지만, 또다시 말을 꺼냈다.
"Well, let it be enough, but there is another thing."
"이제부터 아버지 말씀대로 하겠습니다만, 또 다른 일이 있습니다.“
Then Wang Lung flung his pipe down upon the ground
and he shouted, "Am I never to be in peace?"
그러자 왕룽은 들고 있던 담뱃대를 땅바닥에 내팽개치며 소리쳤다.
"내가 단 한 순간도 평온할 날이 없단 말이냐?“
And the young man went on stubbornly,
"It is not for myself or for my son.
It is for my youngest brother who is your own son.
It is not fit that he grow up so ignorant.
He should be taught something."
하지만 장남은 완강하게 말을 이어갔다.
"저 자신이나 제 아들을 위한 일이 아닙니다.
아버님의 친자식인 제 막내동생을 위한 일입니다.
아이가 저토록 무지하게 자라는 것은 격에 맞지 않습니다.
아무래도 무얼 좀 가르쳐야 마땅합니다.“
Wang Lung stared at this for it was a new thing.
왕룽은 이것이 생소한 이야기였기에 장남을 빤히 쳐다보았다.
He had long ago settled the life of his youngest son,
what it was to be, and he said now,
그는 오래전에 막내아들의 인생을 어떻게 만들지
이미 다 정해놓았었기에 이제 말했다.
"There is no need for any more stomachsful of characters
in this house. Two is enough,
and he is to be on the land when I am dead."
"이 집구석에는 글자로 배를 채울 놈이 더는 필요치 않다.
둘이면 충분하니, 그 아이는 내가 죽은 뒤에 땅을 지켜야 한다."
"Yes, and for this he weeps in the night,
and this is why he is so pale and so reedy a lad,"
answered the eldest son.
"예, 하지만 바로 그 일 때문에 아이가 밤마다 눈물을 흘리고 있어요,
그래서 아이가 저토록 창백하고 갈대처럼 비쩍 마른 것입니다."
장남이 대꾸했다.
Now Wang Lung had never thought to ask his youngest son
what he wished to-do with his life,
since he had decided one son must be on the land,
왕룽은 자식 중 한 명은
반드시 땅을 지켜야 한다고 스스로 결정했었기에,
막내아들에게 장차 어떤 인생을 살고 싶은지
물어볼 생각조차 한 번도 해보지 않았었다.
and this that his eldest son had said struck him
between the brows and he was silent.
장남이 꺼낸 이 말은 그의 미간을 찌르듯 다가왔고
그는 침묵에 빠졌다.
He picked up his pipe from the ground slowly
and pondered about his third son.
왕룽은 땅바닥에 내동댕이쳤던 파이프를 천천히 주워 들고
셋째 아들에 대해 곰곰이 생각했다.
He was a lad not like either of his brothers,
a lad as silent as his mother,
and because he was silent none paid any attention to him.
막내아들은 제 형들 중 누구와도 닮지 않은 아이였고
제 어미처럼 말이 없는 아이였으며, 워낙 말이 없다 보니
그 누구도 아이에게 주의를 기울이지 않았었다.
"Have you heard him say this?"
asked Wang Lung of his eldest son, uncertainly.
"그 아이가 너한테 그런 말을 하더냐?"
왕룽이 다소 확신이 없는 투로 장남에게 물었다.
"Ask him for yourself, my father," replied the young man.
"아버님께서 직접 물어보십시오." 장남이 대답했다.
"Well, but one lad must be on the land,"
said Wang Lung suddenly in argument
and his voice was very loud.
"그렇다 해도, 자식 중 한 놈은 반드시 땅에 있어야 한다."
왕룽이 돌연 항변하듯 아주 큰 소리로 말했다.
"But why, my father?" urged the young man.
"하지만 왜 그래야 합니까, 아버님?" 장남이 대들었다.
"You are a man who need not have any sons like serfs.
It is not fitting.
"아버님은 자식들을 종놈처럼 부릴 필요가 전혀 없는 분이십니다.
그것은 체통에 어긋나는 일입니다.
People will say you have a mean heart.
사람들이 아버님을 보고 마음보가 고약한 사람이라 욕할 것입니다.
'There is a man who makes his son into a hind
while he lives like a prince.' So people will say."
'자기는 임금처럼 살면서
제 자식은 머슴으로 만드는 작자가 저기 있다'라고
사람들이 수군거릴 것입니다."
Now the young man spoke cleverly for he knew
that his father cared mightily what people said of him,
and he went on,
장남은 제 아버지가 사람들이 자신을 어떻게 평가하는지에 대해
엄청나게 신경 쓴다는 사실을 잘 알고 있었기에
영악하게 그렇게 말하곤 다시 말을 이었다
"We could call a tutor and teach him
and we could send him to a southern school
and he could learn
“집으로 훈장을 불러 아이를 가르칠 수도 있고
남쪽의 학교로 보내 배움을 얻게 할 수도 있어요.
and since there is I in your house to help you
and my second brother in his good trade,
let the lad choose what he will."
이 집에는 아버님을 도울 저와
제 몫의 훌륭한 장사를 하고 있는 둘째가 있는 이상,
막내는 제 하고 싶은 것을 선택하게 내버려 둡시다."
Then Wang Lung said at last, "Send him here to me.“
그러자 왕룽은 지고 말았다.
"그 아이를 여기 내 앞으로 보내거라.“
