After a while the third son came and stood before his father
and Wang Lung looked at him to see what he was.
잠시 후 막내 아들이 와서 그의 아버지 앞에 섰고,
왕룽은 그가 얼마나 컸는지 유심히 쳐다보았다.
And he saw a tall and slender lad,
who was neither his father nor his mother,
except that he had his mother's gravity and silence.
키가 크고 날씬한 청소년으로, 제 어머니가 가졌던 진중함과
침묵을 닮았다는 점을 제외하면
아버지도 어머니도 닮지 않은 모습이었다.
But there was more beauty in him than
there had been in his mother,
and for beauty alone he had more of it than
any of Wang Lung's children except the second girl
who had gone to her husband's family
and belonged no more to the house of Wang.
하지만 그의 어머니보다 훨씬 더 빼어난 미모를 지니고 있었고,
용모 하나만 놓고 보면 시집을 가 더 이상 왕 씨 집안사람이 아닌
둘째 딸을 제외하고는 왕룽의 자식들 중 그 누구보다 뛰어났다.
But across the lad's forehead and almost a mar to his beauty
were his two black brows, too heavy and black
for his young, pale face, and when he frowned,
하지만 그의 미모를 거의 망치다시피 하는 것은
아이의 이마를 가로지르는 두 검은 눈썹이었는데,
어리고 창백한 얼굴에 비해 너무 짙고 숯이 많았다.
and he frowned easily, these black brows met,
heavy and straight, across his brow.
아이가 인상을 찌푸릴 때면—아이는 걸핏하면 인상을 찌푸리곤 했다—
이 검은 눈썹들이 이마를 가로질러 짙고 곧게 하나로 맞닿았다.
And Wang Lung stared at his son
and after he had seen him well, he said,
"Your eldest brother says you wish to learn to read."
왕룽은 아들을 빤히 쳐다보았고, 아이를 충분히 살펴본 뒤에 말했다.
"네 형이 말하기를, 네가 글을 배우고 싶어 한다더구나."
And the boy said, scarcely stirring his lips, "Aye.“
그러자 아들은 입술을 거의 움직이지도 않은 채 말했다. "예.“
Wang Lung shook the ash from his pipe
and pushed the fresh tobacco in slowly with his thumb.
왕룽은 파이프에서 재를 털어내고 엄지손가락으로
새 담뱃잎을 천천히 밀어 넣었다.
"Well, and I suppose that means you do not want to work
on the land and I shall not have a son on my own land,
and I with sons and to spare."
"그렇다면 너는 땅에서 일하기를 원치 않는다는 뜻이겠구나.
자식이 차고 넘치도록 많으면서도
정작 내 땅을 지킬 자식은 단 한 명도 두지 못하게 되었어."
This he said with bitterness, but the boy said nothing.
그는 씁쓸함을 담아 이 말을 했으나 아들은 아무 말도 하지 않았다.
He stood there straight and still
in his long white robe of summer linen,
아들은 여름 삼베로 만든 긴 흰 도포를 입은 채
그 자리에 미동도 없이 서 있었다.
and at last Wang Lung was angry at his silence
and he shouted at him, "Why do you not speak?
Is it true you do not want to be on the land?"
마침내 왕룽은 그의 침묵에 화가 치밀어 아이에게 소리쳤다.
"왜 말을 하지 않느냐?
네가 땅에 있기를 원치 않는다는 게 정말이냐?“
And again the boy answered only the one word, "Aye."
이번에도 아들은 오직 한 마디로만 대답했다. "예."
And Wang Lung looking at him said to himself at last
that these sons of his were too much for him in his old age
and they were a care and burden to him
and he did not know what to do with them,
왕룽은 막내 아들을 바라보며,
마침내 이 자식 녀석들이 자기 본인 노후에 너무 과한 존재들이며
자신에게 걱정거리이자 짐이 될 뿐이라
도무지 어찌해야 할지 모르겠다고 속으로 생각했다.
and he shouted again,
feeling himself ill-used by these sons of his,
"What is it to me what you do? Get away from me!"
왕룽은 자식들에게 부당한 대우를 받고 있다고 느끼며
다시 한번 소리쳤다
"네가 무엇을 하든 내게 무슨 상관이란 말이냐?
내 앞에서 당장 물러가거라!“
Then the boy went away swiftly and Wang Lung sat alone
and he said to himself that his two girls were better
after all than his sons,
그러자 아들은 재빨리 자리를 떴고,
왕룽은 홀로 앉아 두 딸이
아들들보다 차라리 낫다고 속으로 생각했다
one, poor fool that she was,
never wanted anything more than
a bit of any food and her length of cloth to play with,
한 아이는 가련한 바보 딸이라 그저 먹을 것 조금과
가지고 놀 천 조각 하나 외에는 더 바라는 것이 없었고,
and the other one married and away from his house.
다른 한 아이는 시집을 가서 집을 떠났기 때문이었다.
And the twilight came down over the court
and shut him into it alone.
그러는 동안 황혼이 안뜰 위로 내려앉아 그를 그곳에 홀로 가두었다.
Nevertheless, as Wang Lung always did when his anger passed,
he let his sons have their way,
그럼에도 불구하고 왕룽은 늘 분노가 가라앉으면 언제나 그랬듯이
아들들이 뜻대로 하게 내버려 두었다.
and he called his elder son and he said,
"Engage a tutor for the third one if he wills it,
and let him do as he likes,
only I am not to be troubled about it."
왕룽은 장남을 불러 말했다.
"셋째 녀석이 원한다면 훈장을 븥여주고,
제 하고 싶은 대로 하게 내버려 두거라.
다만 그 일로 나를 귀찮게 하지는 마라."
And he called his second son and said,
"Since I am not to have a son on the land
그리고 그는 둘째 아들을 불러 말했다.
"아무도 농사를 돌보지 않겠다니까,
it is your duty to see to the rents and to the silver
that comes in from the land at each harvest.
You can weigh and measure
이제부터는 소작료라던가 매 추수 때마다
땅에서 들어오는 수입을 네가 맡아 보아라.
너는 저울질도 할 줄 알고 측정도 할 수 있으니까,
and you shall be my steward."
이제부터 네가 내 대리인이 되거라."
