요리에 대해 잘 아는 성안의 친구들을 위해서는
가장 좋은 고기를 남겨두었고,
반드시 초대해야 하는 소작농들과 시골 사람들을 위해서는
앞뜰에다 상을 차렸는데,
그들에게는 오직 두 번째로 좋은 고기와 술만을 대접했다.
since they daily ate coarse fare,
and a little better was very good to them.
그들은 평소에 거친 음식을 먹으니
조금만 더 나은 음식을 주어도 매우 훌륭하게 여긴 다는 것이다.
And the second son watched the money
and the gifts that came in, and he gave to the slaves
and servants the least that could be given them,
둘째 아들은 부조로 들어오는 돈과 선물을 일일이 지켜보았고,
종들과 하인들에게는 줄 수 있는 가장 최소한의 액수만을 쥐여주었다.
so that Cuckoo sneered when into her hand
he put a paltry two pieces of silver
and she said in the hearing of many,
그리하여 구쿠는 자신의 손에 고작 은전 두 닢을 쥐여주는
그를 비웃으며 많은 이들이 듣는 앞에서 말했다.
"Now a truly great family is not so careful of its silver
and one can see that this family does not rightly belong
in these courts."
"자, 진짜 부자는 은전을 이토록 아끼지 않는 법이니,
이 집 사람들은 이런 대갓집에 살 만한 자격이 없나 봐.“
The eldest son heard this, and he was ashamed
and he was afraid of her tongue
and he gave her more silver secretly
and he was angry with his second brother.
장남은 이 말을 듣고 창피함을 느꼈고
그녀의 입방아가 두려웠기에
남몰래 그녀에게 은전을 더 쥐여주었으며,
자신의 둘째 동생에게 화가 났다.
Thus there was trouble between them even
on the very wedding day
when the guests sat about the tables
and when the bride's chair was entering the courts.
이처럼 하객들이 상에 둘러앉고
신부의 가마가 안뜰로 들어서는 바로 그 혼인 날에도
그들 형제 사이에는 불화가 있었다.
And of his own friends the eldest son asked
but a few of the least considered to the feast,
또한 장남은 자신의 친구들 중
가장 보잘것없는 이들로 몇 명만을 잔치에 청했는데,
because he was ashamed of his brother's parsimony
and because the bride was but a village maid.
동생의 인색함이 부끄러웠고
신부가 고작 시골 처녀에 불과했기 때문이었다.
He stood aside scornfully, and he said,
"Well, and my brother has chosen an earthen pot
when he might, from my father's position,
have had a cup of jade."
형은 오만하게 한쪽에 비켜 서서 말했다.
"내 동생은 아버님의 덕에 옥잔을 얻을 수도 있었을 텐데
고작 흙그릇을 택했구나."
And he was scornful and nodded stiffly
when the pair came and bowed before him
and his wife as their elder brother and sister.
그는 동생 부부가 예의에 따라
그와 자기 부인에게 절을 올릴 때
오만하게 굴며 고개만 뻣뻣하게 끄덕였다.
And the wife of the eldest son was correct and haughty
and bowed only the least that could be considered proper
for her position.
그리고 장남의 아내는 한 치의 흐트러짐 없이 오만하게 굴며,
자신의 지위에 비추어 예의에 어긋나지 않을 만큼만
겨우 고개를 숙여 답례했다.
