Now of all of them who lived in these courts it seemed
there was none wholly at peace and comfortable there
except the small grandson who had been born to Wang Lung.
이제 이 큰 집에 사는 모든 이들 중에서,
왕룽의 어린 손자 말고는 그곳에서 전적으로 평온하고
안락하게 지내는 자가 아무도 없는 듯했다.
Even Wang Lung himself, waking within the shadows
of the great carved bed where he slept in his own room
that was next to the court where Lotus lived,
왕룽 자신조차도, 연화가 사는 안뜰 바로 옆에 있는 자기 방의
멋지게 조각된 침대에서 잠을 잤으나,
even he woke to dream sometimes
that he was back in the simple, dark, earth-walled house
where a man could throw his cold tea down
where he would not splatter a piece of carven wood,
and where a step took him into his own fields.
화려한 가구를 더렵힐까 염려할 필요가 없었고,
마시다 남은 차를 아무 데나 내던질 수 있으며,
한 걸음만 내디디면 자신의 들판으로 이어지던 그 소박하고
어두운 흙벽 집으로 되돌아가는 꿈을 간혹 꾸며 잠에서 깨곤 했다.
As for Wang Lung's sons, there was a continual unrest,
왕룽의 아들들로 말하자면, 그들에겐 불안이 그치는 날이 없었다
the eldest son lest not enough be spent
and they be belittled in the eyes of men
장남은 돈을 써야 할 데에 충분히 쓰지 않아
사람들 눈에 자기 가족이 얕보이지 않을까,
and lest the villagers come walking through the great gate
when a man from the town was there to call,
and so make them ashamed before him;
혹은 성안에서 손님이 찾아 왔을 때
시골 소작농들이 큰 대문을 통과해 걸어 들어와
손님 앞에서 자신들을 부끄럽게 만들지 않을까 전전긍긍했고,
and the second son lest
there was waste and money gone;
둘째 아들은 돈이 낭비돨까 봐 항상 염려했으며,
and the youngest son striving to make repair the years
he had lost as a farmer's son.
막내아들은 농부의 아들로 보낸 잃어버린 세월을 만회하기 위해
글공부에 매진하느라 애썼다
But there was one who ran staggering hither and yon
and content with his life
and it was the son of the eldest son.
하지만 제 삶에 만족하며
여기저기 비틀거리며 뛰어다니는 이가 한 명 있었으니,
바로 장남의 아들이었다.
This small one never thought of any other place than
this great house and to him it was neither great nor small
but only his house,
이 어린 자식은 이 대저택 외에 다른 장소는 생각해 본 적도 없었기에
그에게 이곳은 크지도 작지도 않은 그저 자신의 집일 뿐이었고,
and here was his mother and here his father and grandfather
and all those who lived but to serve him.
여기에는 제 어머니와 아버지, 할아버지,
그리고 오직 자신을 위해 살아가는 그 모든 이들이 있었다.
And from this one did Wang Lung secure peace,
and he could never have enough of watching him
and laughing at him and picking him up when he fell.
왕룽은 오직 이 아이에게서만 마음의 평온을 얻었기에,
아이를 바라보고 아이의 재롱에 웃으며
아이가 넘어질 때면 일으켜 세워주는 일에
아무리 시간을 보내도 싫증이 나지 않았다.
He remembered also what his own father had done,
and he delighted to take a girdle
and put it about the child and walk,
holding him thus from falling,
그는 또한 자신의 아버지가 했던 행동을 기억해 냈고,
긴 띠를 가져다가 아이의 몸에 둘러매고는 아이가 넘어지지 않도록
끈의 끝을 이리저리 붙잡아주며 걷는 것을 즐거워했다.
and they went from court to court,
and the child pointed at the darting fish in the pools
and jabbered this and that and snatched the head of a flower
and was at ease in the midst of everything,
and only thus did Wang Lung find peace.
그들은 이 뜰에서 저 뜰로 돌아다녔고,
아이는 연못에서 휙휙 지나가는 물고기들을 가리키며
이 말 저 말 쫑알거렸고 꽃송이를 덥석 낚아채기도 하면서
모든 풍경 속에서 편안하게 지냈다.
왕룽은 오직 이렇게 손자와 같이 할 때에야 비로소 평화를 찾았다.
Nor was there only this one.
어린 손자는 이 아이뿐만이 아니었다.
The wife of the eldest son was faithful
and she conceived and bore and conceived and bore regularly
and faithfully, and each child as it was born had its slave.
장남의 아내는 태가 좋아 규칙적이고 성실하게 아이를 배고 낳고
또 배고 낳았으며,
아이가 새로 태어날 때마다 유모를 한 사람씩 들였다.
Thus Wang Lung each year saw more children in the courts
and more slaves,
이리하여 왕룽은 해마다 집안에 더 많은 아이들과
더 많은 종들이 늘어나는 것을 보았고,
so that when one said to him,
"There is to be another mouth
again in the eldest son's court," he only laughed and said,
그리하여 누군가 그에게
"장남 집안에 또 입이 하나 늘어나게 생겼습니다"라고 말하면,
그는 그저 껄껄 웃으며 말했다.
"Eh—eh—well, there is rice and enough for all since
we have the good land."
"에헤, 글쎄, 얼마든지 낳으라지.
우리에겐 좋은 땅이 있으니 쌀은 모두가 먹고도 남을 만큼 넉넉하다네.“
And he was pleased when his second son's wife bore also
in her season,
그는 둘째 며느리가 역시 제철에 아이를 낳았을 때도 흡족해했는데,
and she gave birth to a girl first as was fitting
and it was seemly out of respect to her sister-in-law.
그녀가 윗동서에 대한 예의와 도리에 어긋나지 않게
첫아이로 딸을 낳아주었기 때문이었다.
Wang Lung, then, in the space of five years
had four grandsons and three grand-daughters
and the courts were filled with their laughter
and their weeping.
그리하여 왕룽은 다섯 해 동안에
네 명의 손자와 세 명의 손녀를 두게 되었고,
안뜰은 아이들의 웃음소리와 울음소리로 가득 채워졌다.
