Now five years is nothing in a man's life except
when he is very young and very old,
다섯 해라는 세월은 인생에서 그리 대수롭지 않은 시간이지만,
사람이 아주 어리거나 아주 늙었을 때는 큰 차이가 있다.
and if it gave to Wang Lung these others,
it took away also that old dreamer, his uncle,
그리고 지난 5년은 왕룽에게 새로운 자손들을 안겨다 주었지만,
거의 잊고 지내던 늙은 공상가인 숙부를 데려가기도 했다.

he and his old wife were fed and clothed
and had what they wished of opium.
사실 왕룽은 이 숙부, 숙모에게 먹고살 것을 마련해주고
원대로 아편을 대주는 일외엔 그들을 거의 잊고 있었다
On the winter of the fifth year it was very cold,
more cold than any thirty years before,
다섯째 해의 겨울은 몹시 추웠는데,
지난 30년 중 그 어느 때보다도 더 추워
so that for the first time in Wang Lung's memory
the moat froze about the wall of the town
and men could walk back and forth on it.
왕룽의 기억으로는 평생 처음으로 성벽 주변의 해자가 얼어붙어
사람들이 그 위를 걸어 다닐 수 있을 정도였다.
A continual icy wind blew also from the northeast
and there was nothing, no garment of goatskin or fur,
that could keep a man warm.
또한 북동쪽에서 끊임없이 차가운 칼바람이 불어와,
염소가죽 옷이나 털가죽 옷 등 그 어떤 옷으로도
사람의 몸을 따뜻하게 유지할 수 없었다.
In every room in the great house they burned braziers
of charcoal and still it was cold
enough to see a man's breath when he blew it out.
왕룽의 대저택에서는 방마다 숯 화로를 피워두었으나
여전히 입김이 또렷이 보일 정도로 추웠다.
Now Wang Lung's uncle and his wife had long
since smoked all the flesh off their bones
and they lay day in and day out on their beds
like two old dry sticks, and there was no warmth in them.
이 무렵 왕룽의 숙부와 숙모는 이미 오래전부터 아편을 피우느라
뼈에 붙은 살점을 모두 태워버린 상태였기에,
낮이나 밤이나 두 개의 마른 장작 개비처럼 침상에 누워 있었으며
몸에는 아무런 온기가 없었다.
And Wang Lung heard his uncle could not sit up
even any more in his bed and he spat blood
whenever he moved at all,
그러던 중 왕룽은 숙부가 이제 침상에 앉아 있을 수조차 없으며
몸을 조금이라도 움직일 때마다 피를 토한다는 소식을 들었다.
and he went out to see
and he saw there were not many hours left
for the old man.
그가 살피러 나가 보니
노인에게 남은 시간이 몇 시간 되지 않음을 알 수 있었다.
Then Wang Lung bought two coffins of wood good enough
but not too good,
그리하여 왕룽은 제법 괜찮지만
너무 과하지는 않은 나무 관 두 개를 샀다
and he had the coffins taken into the room
where his uncle lay that the old man might see them
and die in comfort, knowing there was a place for his bones.
그리고 노인이 자신의 뼈를 뉘어둘 자리가 있음을 알고
편안하게 눈을 감을 수 있도록
숙부가 누워 있는 방 안으로 관을 들여놓게 했다.
And his uncle said, his voice a quavering whisper,
"Well, and you are a son to me and more than that
wandering one of my own."
그러자 숙부가 떨리는 속삭임으로 말했다.
"자, 자네는 내게 아들과 다름없고,
저 사방을 떠도는 내 친자식 놈보다 훨씬 더 나은 존재로구려.“
And the old woman said,
but she was still stouter than the man,
"If I die before that son comes home,
promise me you will find a good maid for him,
so that he may have sons for us yet."
And Wang Lung promised it.
그리고 숙부보다는 여전히 살집이 있던 숙모가 말했다.
"만약 그 아이가 집으로 돌아오기 전에 내가 죽는다면,
그 아이에게 좋은 처녀를 구해주어
우리 대를 이어갈 아들들을 낳을 수 있게 하겠다고 약속해 주오."
왕룽은 그렇게 하겠노라 약속했다.
What hour his uncle died Wang Lung did not know,
except that he lay dead one evening
when the serving woman went in to take a bowl of soup,
숙부가 어느 시간에 숨을 거두었는지 왕룽도 알지 못했다.
다만 어느 날 저녁 침모가 국 한 사발을 들고 들어갔을 때
그가 죽어 누워 있는 것을 발견했을 뿐이었다.
and Wang Lung buried him on a bitter cold day
when the wind blew the snow over the land in clouds,
and he put the coffin in the family enclosure
beside his father, only a little lower than his father's grave,
but above the place where his own was to be.
온 땅 위로 눈보라가 치고 매섭게 추운 날, 왕룽은 숙부를 장사 지냈다.
왕룽은 가족 묘역의 아버님 무덤 옆, 아버님의 무덤보다는 조금 낮지만
장차 자신의 무덤이 들어설 자리보다는 높은 곳에
숙부의 관을 묻어주었다.
Then Wang Lung caused mourning to be made
for the whole family
and they wore the sign of mourning for a year,
그러고 나서 왕룽은 온 가족에게 상복을 입게 했고
그들은 일 년 동안 상을 치렀다.
not because any truly mourned the passing of this old man
who had never been anything but a care to them,
but because it is fitting so to do in a great family
when a relative dies.
그 누구도 평생 걱정거리 외에는 아무것도 되어준 적 없는
이 노인의 죽음을 진심으로 슬퍼해서가 아니라,
친척이 죽었을 때 명문가라면
마땅히 그리 행해야 격에 맞기 때문이었다
Then Wang Lung moved his uncle's wife into the town
where she would not be alone,
and he gave her a room
at the end of a far court for her own,
그 후 왕룽은 숙모를 홀로 남겨 둘 수가 없어서
성 안 집으로 모셔왔고,
안쪽 멀리 있는 뜰의 끝방을 그녀의 처소로 내주었다.
and he told Cuckoo to supervise a slave in the care of her,
구쿠를 시켜서 여종 하나를 붙여주고 그녀를 돌보게 했다.
and the old woman sucked her opium pipe
and lay on her bed in great content,
sleeping day after day,
늙은 숙모는 아편 파이프를 빨며 몹시 흡족해한 채
침상에 누워 나날이 잠을 청했고,
and her coffin was beside her where she could see it
for her comfort.
장차 그녀가 들어가 눕게 될 그녀의 관은
그녀가 위안을 삼으며 바라볼 수 있도록 그녀 곁에 놓아두었다.
And Wang Lung marvelled to think that once he had feared her
for a great fat blowsy country woman, idle and loud,
왕룽은 예전에 자신이 숙모를 뚱뚱하고 부시스하며 게으르고 목소리만
큰 시골 여편네라며 두려워했던 일을 생각하며 기이하게 여겼다.
she who lay there now shrivelled and yellow and silent,
and as shrivelled and yellow as the Old Mistress
had been in the fallen House of Hwang.
지금 저곳에 쪼그라들고 누렇게 뜬 채
침묵 속에 누워 있는 그녀의 모습은,
몰락한 황 씨 가문에서 누렇게 뜬 채 쪼그라들어 있던
옛 노마님의 모습과 다를 바가 없었기 때문이다.
