“돌연변이는 어디서 발생하게 되는가요?”
“아~ 아주 적절한 때에 치명적인 질문을 하셨어요. 돌연변이는 뉴클레오타이드의 변화에서 시작되고 그 변화된 형질은 다음 세대로 전이되어요. 돌연변이는 대부분이 결과적으로 해롭거나 치명적이예요. 그런데, 이 돌연변이가 발생하려면 오랜 세월을 필요로 해요. 뉴클레오타이드는 폭이 겨우 피코(pico)라고 1센티미터의 10만분의 1정도에 해당하는 초 극히 작은 물체이예요. 이렇게 작은 물체에서 일어난 변화들 중에서도 지극히 일부가 이로운 돌연변이를 유발하고 진화의 원동력이 되는거예요.”
“그런데, 그 유명한 미생물 학자들이 알지 못하는 특이 물질이 포함된 육류를 섭취한 인체에서 어떤 변화를 일으켜 살상까지하고 있는데, 그것의 원인을 찾기 위하여 지금 가고 있다는 말이지요?”
제임스의 말을 듣던 김지영 박사는 멍해졌다. 그녀가 할 일을 정리해 주고 있잖은가. 놀랐다.
“아아아~~~ 제임스 아저씨! 도대체 당신은 뭐예요? 왜 이렇게 저를 놀라게 하시는 거예요. 엄마는 무조건 아저씨를 믿으면 된다고 하셨는데, 너무 종잡을 수 없어요. 어떻게 그런 것들을 알고 있어요?”
김지영은 정말 놀랐다. 그가 무엇을 어디까지 알고 있는지 오히려 궁금하기까지 하였다. 밤늦도록 어머니하고 이야기하였지만, 어머니도 그에 대하여 자세히는 모른 것 같았다. 그러나 그에 대하여 말씀하시는 감정이 ‘아하~ 어머니가 제임스 아저씨를 사랑하고 있구나’ 하는 것을 여자의 본능으로 감지하게 하였다. 그것은 어디까지나 사랑의 감정이었고, 그 사람에 대한 내면과 외면적 행태에 대하여는 잘 모르고 계시는 것 같았다. 그러한 것이 복합되어 지영을 더욱 궁금하고 경계하게 만들었다.
제임스는 재빠르게 생각을 하였다. 어떤 의심이나 불신을 가지고 있어서는 이번 여행에 해가 될 수는 있어도 덕이 될 것은 하나도 없다고 생각하였다.
"아! 잠깐, 화장실 좀 다녀 와야 겠습니다. 좀 전에 마신 쥬스가 뱃속에서 요동치는군요. 이럴 때 저의 고향에서는 맛치를 먹었는데... 금방 났거든요."
"아저씨. 지금 화장실로 맛치 먹으러 가는 건 아니겠지요?"
잠시 후 제임스는 다시 돌아와 앉으며 입을 열었다. 그 순간에도 지영이는 그의 입을 주시하고 있었다. 타이밍이 좋았다.
“어머니가 말씀하지 않으셨군요. 보잘 것 없는 구두딱이가 세상사에 대한 내공(strength of mind=마음의 힘)이 고수(master)라는 것을... 김 박사가 글로벌 특이 미생물학회로 회의 참석차 온다고 어머니로 부터 연락을 받았을 때 이후 한국과 동아시아 상황및 특이 미생물학회의 하는 일에 대하여 알아봤습니다. 그리고 대충 정리를 해 보았지요. 그 분야는 생소하지만 과거와는 달리 인터넷이 잘 발달되어 있어서 짧은 시간안에 필요한 것들을 얻을 수 있었지요. 저 같은 사람은 한 분야에 깊이 있게 알지는 못하지만, 상황의 흐름을 파악하고 정. 오의 길을 판단 할 수가 있습니다. 그리고 가까운 장차도 짐작 할 수가 있습니다. 그런 맥락에서 김 박사가 아테네로 간다고 하였을 때 제가 알고 있는 사람들에게 연락하여 두었습니다. 어머니의 일이 제 일입니다. 어머니에게도 김지영 박사를 안전하게 지금 그대로를 다시 어머니 앞에 데려다 드리겠다고 약속했습니다. 이제 저에 대한 의구심은 지워도 됩니다.”
“좋아요. 아저씨. 그러면 제가 그리스와 이집트를 다녀오려는 궁극적 목적도 짐작하시겠어요?”
“김지영 박사! 제가 조사하고 판단한 바로는, 지금의 상황이 아주 심각합니다. 원인을 알지 못하고는 그것을 소멸할 방법을 찾지 못합니다. 지금까지는 김 박사의 판단이 맞다고 생각합니다. 그런데, 처음 시작이 어디에서 어떻게 언제 발생하였다고 생각합니까? 저는 다른 인과 과정을 생각해 봤습니다.”
지영은 다시 놀랐다. 그는 보통 평범한 구두닦기가 아닌 것 같았다. 우선은 안심되었지만, 그가 적이 될지 아군이 될지도 몰라서 조금 걱정되었다. 지영은 허리를 젖히고 그를 다시 봤다. 그는 짙은 블루색의 군용 야전점퍼를 입고 있었다. 검정색 진바지에 검정색 첼시부츠를 신고 있었다. 그의 두 다리 사이에 놓아 둔 것은 달랑 빽색 하나 였다. 그를 유심히 보고 있는 지영을 제임스는 그녀의 의도를 알고 있다는 듯 허리를 펴서 세우며 미소지었다.
“아저씨는 돼지의 사료에 대하여 생각하시는 군요. 맞지요?”
“김 박사도 그래서 아테네로 가시는 것 맞지요? 출발하기 전에 아는 사람을 통해 스와인 피딩의 한국내 유입경로를 알아봤습니다.그리고 알버타에 있는 스와인 피딩을 제조. 수출하는 회사에 대하여 알아봤습니다. 서너개 회사가 수출을 하고 있지만, 그 중 한 회사가 동아시아 국가로 집중 수출하고 있으며, 최근 미생물이 함유된 고 효능의 신제품을 개발하여 공급하고 있음을 확인하였습니다. 지금 이 이야기는 스페셜리스터가 하는 말이 아니고 그 전부를 아우를 수 있는 제너럴리스터가 말하는 것입니다.”
그는 말을 마치자 지영을 바라보았다. ‘궁금한 것을 물어봐라’ 하듯. 지영은 그의 말을 충실히 들었다. 뭔가 레이 아웃이 그려지는 것 같았다.
“그것이 그리스와 이집트와 무슨 연관성이 있다고 생각하세요?”
“아직은 모릅니다. 그 점에 대하여는 김 박사가 잘 알고 계실 것입니다. 다만, 미생물과 돼지사료의 관계와 미생물이 배양 되어서 함유되었는가? 아니면 섞여서 사료화 되어 돼지 체내에서 배양되는가? 하는 것도 알아야 할 것이며, 그 미생물 숙주를 연구. 개발하는 연구소 소재가 아테네에 있음을 확인했습니다. 혹시 김 박사도 그 회사를 방문하려는 것 아닙니까?”
지영은 눈을 감고 자는듯 말이 없었다. 그러나 그의 입에서 나오는 비전문가의 전문적 이야기는 계속 지영을 놀라게 하였다. 그와 긴밀히 협조해도 되겠구나 하는 안도감이 생겼다. 그러다 스르르 잠이 들었다. 제임스는 혼자있는 김선애를 걱정하고 있었다. 날짜로는 2틀 사이 틈나는대로 호신술과 권총 사용하는 법과 위급한상황에서 가져야 하는 생존의 기본적인 마음과 자세 등 등을 가르쳐 주고 실전과 같이 연습도 하도록 하여 주었다. 아무리 안전한 캐나다라고 하여도 여자 혼자는 특히 선애는 안된다고 생각하여 할 수 있는 방법 모두를 짧은 시간에 알려주었다.
“제임스. 지영이를 지금 그대로, 지금 그대로의 지영이를 제임스가 제 앞에 데려다 주세요. 약속해 주세요. 네. 제임스?”
김선애가 떠나는 제임스의 가슴에 안겨 간곡히 부탁한 말이다. 제임스는 그 모습과 말을 다시 떠 올렸다.

쿠르타이스 박사는 긴 여행에 의한 지치고 피곤한 몸을 뜨거운 욕조에 담고 눈을 감은 채 생각에 잠겼다. 정확하게 그의 구좌로 입금된 돈과 지금 심각하게 벌어지고 있는 사태에 대한 연관관계를. 그리고 디오나수스의 역활에 대하여. 그는 만약의 경우를 대비하여야 한다고 생각했다. 어떤 경우라도 그는 두 발을 딛고 꿋꿋이 서야 한다고 생각했다. 그때 비서이자 신물질 개발을 총괄하는 담당자인 클라라가 실오라기 하나 걸치지 않은 눈부신 몸매를 뽐내듯 당당하게 걸어 그가 누운 욕조로 들어왔다. 쿠르타이스는 지금 여자가 필요했다.절묘한 타이밍이었다. 그는 누운채 그녀의 육감적인 몸매를 보았다. 탄탄한 두 젖가슴과 운동으로 다져진 늘씬한 허리의 멋진 곡선과 뇌살시킬 것 같은 큰 눈과 두툼한 입술 그리고 두 다리 사이 깊은 곳의 풍부한 검은 숲은 그의 말초신경들을 파르르 떨게 하며 근육을 긴장시켰다.
“박사님, 무슨 걱정이 있으세요? 피곤해보여요.”
“아니야. 다 잘되어 가고 있어. 긴 여행이라서 쉬고 싶을 뿐이야. 당신같은 충전기가 있어서 나를 충전시켜 주기만 하면 돼.”
“예. 제가 그 역활을 충실히 할께요.”

그 시각, 아테네의 헤라 호텔에 들어서자 그때서야 미처 생각치 못했던 난처한 입장을 생각해낸 지영은 망설이며 라비에 선 채 제임스를 쳐다보고 있었다. 그런 지영을 보며 이미 준비한듯 제임스는 호텔 카운터로 갔다. 오전의 카운터는 그렇게 붐비지는 않았다. 4성급 호텔이라서 바닥은 윤이 잘 나 있는 대리석이었다. 출입구와 마주보는 벽면에 에리베이터 3대가 있었고 그 사이의 오른쪽 벽에 체그-인 데스크가 있었다. 그 체크인 데스크 좌측에 쇼파와 의자들이 있었고 그 사이로 커피샾과 라운지와 레스토랑으로 가는 붉은 카페트가 깔려 있었다. 체크인. 아웃 데스크에서 에리베이터와 출입문이 한눈에 보였다. 그가 걸어오는 것을 보고있는 데스크안의 여직원에게로 갔다.
“Angella? I’m James. Can you give me two RoomKeys for Kistonius. 안제라? 나 제임스입니다. 키스토니우스의 룸 두개를 주시오.”
그녀는 그가 동양인인 것에 놀란듯 하였으나 지체없이 대답하였다. 키스토니우스의 영향력을 짐작 할 수 있었다.
“Yer sir~ That’s no problem. 예. 알겠습니다. 문제없습니다.”
데스크에 있던 여직원이 컴퓨터를 두드렸다. 그리고 가볍게 인사를 하며 뒤에 걸린 룸 키 두개와 노란색 봉투를 가지고 와서 제임스에게 주었다. 302호와 303호였다.
“김 박사님! 문제가 해결되었지요?”
제임스는 뒷쪽에서 멍한 채 바라보고만 있던 김지영 박사에게 갔다. 그가 어쩧던 하는 일 처리가 시원 시원하였다. 그들이 안내인을 따라 방을 들어서자 제임스는 지영의 여행가방을 화장대위에 두는 것을 거들었다. 그리고 그는 유에스 달러 한장을 안내인에게 주자 고마워하며 그 안내인은 깍듯이 인사를 한 후 방을 나갔다.
“제가 나가면 문을 잘 잠궈고 편히 쉬십시요. 저는 잠시 나갔다 오겠습니다. 그리고 이것은 워키토키입니다. 온(on) 상태에서는 어디서든 3km안에서 저와 연락을 할 수가 있습니다.”
그는 노란 봉투에서 지포 라이터 케이스 크기의 무전기 하나를 주었다.
그리고 그는 다시 노란 봉투를 지영이에게 주었다. 봉투는 제법 묵직하였다. 지영이 그 봉투속에 손을 넣어 내용물을 꺼냈다. 유로 달러였다. 5 euro x 20장, 10x20, 20x20, 50x20, 100 euro x 5장모두가 eurdollar였으며 합계 2,200euro였다. 하나같이 색상과 디자인이 아름다웠으며 예술적이었다. 아직 봉투속에 무언가 있었다. 지영은 놀라며 다시 꺼집어 내었다. 수십개의 동전이었다. 1euro와 2euro 동전은 바이메탈이었다. 2유로 동전은 속이 금색 겉이 은색이었고, 1유로는 그 반대였다. 모두가 역시 아름다웠다. 그가 다시 말했다.
“현재 USDollar와는 1.3입니다. 비상금으로 잘 보관하였다가 필요할 때 유용하게 사용하십시요. 그 동전들은 혹 공중전화를 하게 될 때를 대비해서 준비했으니 언제나 소지하십시요. 제가 입구에서 워키토키를 하기 전에는 누구에게도 문을 열어 주어서는 안됩니다. 30분 안에 돌아 올 것입니다.”
지영은 다시 놀랐다. 노보텔 호텔에서의 그것과 지금 역시 취한 그의 치밀한 배려에 대해서. 도대체 어디서 저런 생각과 행동들이 나오는가 궁금하기도 하였다. 무슨 첩보 영화속의 주인공 같다는 생각을 하며 피식 웃었다. 누가 주인공인데...
그는 303호를 나오며 출입문이 벽과 맞닿는 윗쪽에 머리카락 하나를 두 부분이 연결되게 붙혔다. 문은 짙은 커피색이었고 삼면의 벽은 연한 블루였다. 바닥은 중동지역의 실내 카펫이 대부분 그렇듯 원형의 문양이 갈색으로 짙게 연결되어 있는 붉은색이었다.
제임스가 떠나자 곧 지영은 창가로 가서 커턴을 젖히고 오전의 고요한 옥빛 지중해를 맘껏 즐기며 현재 위치한 곳을 떠올렸다. 토론토를 출발하기 전에 컴퓨터에서 그리스의 지정학적 위치를 파악해 두었다. 서쪽과 남쪽으로는 지중해와 동쪽으로는 에게해가 그리스를 둘러싸고 있다. 또한 북쪽으로는 서쪽에서 동쪽으로 알바니아, 마케도니아와 불가리아 그리고 터키의 일부분이 국경에 접해있었다. 김지영 박사는 랩탑 컴퓨터에서 쿠르타이스 박사에게 도착했음을 알렸다.
지영이 샤워를 마치고 가벼운 외출복 차림으로 준비한 후 테이블에 앉아 쿠르키우스 박사와 만나서 의논하고 물을 것에 대한 정리를 하였다. 지영은 서서히 긴장되기 시작하였다. 그것은 이곳에 온 목적을 잊지 않고 신속히 성과를 얻도록 격려하였다. 그 때 워키토키에서 신호음이 울렸다. 제임스였다.
"아저씨?"
"들어가도 됩니까?"
제임스는 워키토키를 하기 전에 출입문을 확인하였다. 지영이 문을 열어주자 방에 들어선 그는 눈을 동그랗게 뜨고 놀랐다.
"와우~ 웬 아름다운 사람이..."
그는 달리 더 말하지 않았다. 앞에 김선애가 빙긋 미소지으며 서 있는 것같았다. 아마도 선애의 젊은 시절 모습이 이랬으리라 생각하였다. 그 생각도 잠시였다.
"아저씨. 오후 1시 30분에 쿠르타이스 박사와 트로이 라는 레스토랑에서 만나기로 하였어요. 택시 타면 10분 거리라고 하였어요."
제임스는 지영의 말을 듣고 생각에 잠겼다. 분명 지금의 호텔 이름도 알려 주었을 것이다. 지영의 말대로라면... 그리고 지영이 이곳에 온 목적대로 라면 지체하여 재고할 시간이 없다. 가능하다면 일분이라도 당겨 블루웜 사태를 소멸시키도록 하여야 한다고 생각하였다.
"좋습니다. 외출준비는?"
지영이 활짝 웃으며 빙그르 한 바뀌 돌았다. '어때요?' 라고 묻고 있었다. 티없이 맑은 아이의 모습이었다.

레스토랑 트로이는 바다가 보이는 한적한 곳, 엑티-데미스토틀레우스 (Akti-themistokleous) 도로를 따라 우측편에는 신흥주택가가 정연하게 자리하고 있었고 그 도로 중간 쯤에서 좌회전하여 아스팔트 냄새가 날 것 같은 새로운 도로를 따라 500m쯤 가서 바다가 보이는 언덕위에 하얀색으로 칠해진 2층 건물이었다. 주변의 잔디와 포도밭을 지나면 바로 주차장이 있고 그 주차장 좌측편에는 이미 세대의 승용차가 주차하고 있었다. 제임스는 건물 뒤 중앙의 출입구 앞에 차를 세웠다. 출입구를 제외한 문은 보이지 않았다. 아마도 바다를 향한 뒷쪽은 파티오와 유리창으로 탁트인 시야를 확보하고 있을 것이었다.
"먼저 들어가서 박사님을 만나십시요. 저는 밖에 있겠습니다. 필요하면, 워키하십시요."
지영은 소나타에서 내려 출입구로 들어갔다. 지영이 들어간 것을 확인한후 제임스는 주차한 세대의 우측 옆에 소나타를 주차했다. 소나타는 키스토니우스가 호텔 주차장에 미리 준비해 둔 것이었다.
지중해의 밝은 햇살이 내리쬐는 파티오에 그는 바다를 등지고 앉아 있었다. 바닷바람은 기분 좋게 불어왔다. 파티오 넘어 보이는 옥색 바다는 눈부시었다. 지영은 탁 트이는 숨결에 스스로 만족하며 상쾌한 기분을 느낄 수 있었다. 그는 검정색 바지에 하얀 구두와 하얀색 정장 상의를 입고 있었다. 턱수염을 보기 좋게 기르고 있었다. 학자라기 보다는 점잖은 중년제비 같아 보였다. 김지영 박사가, 웨이터가 안내해 준 테이블로 걸어가자 김지영 박사를 알아 본 쿠르타이스 박사가 일어나 두 걸음 다가왔다. 동양인이라고는 오직 김지영 박사 외에는 없었다.
"김지영 박사이시지요?"
"예. 김지영이예요. 쿠르타이스 박사님?"
그는 정통 그리스인 같은 모습이었다.
"반갑습니다. 먼 길을 오셨군요. 정말 아름다운 동양미인을 만나게 되어 영광입니다."
"학계에서 숭앙받는 박사님을 뵙게 되어 저야 말로 큰 영광입니다."
그가 안내한 테이블에는 젊은 여자가 앉아 있었다. 지영이 그를 따라 그 테이블로 가자 그 여자는 일어났다.
"클라라입니다. 저를 돕고있습니다."
그 여자. 클라라가 가볍게 미소를 지으며 손을 내밀었다. 김지영 박사보다는 작았지만 눈이 크고 입술이 두툼하였다. 젖가슴골이 나타나도록 가슴이 깊이 파인 커피색 원피스를 입고 있었다. 그 여자의 뒤로 햇살이 스며든 지중해의 바다는 눈부셨다. 쿠르타이스 박사는 지영을 반갑게 맞았다. 김지영 박사는 미생물학계에서의 높은 평판과 연구업적의 지대한 가치에 대하여 쿠르타이스 박사에게 진정으로 존경을 표했다.
"지구는 물론이고 우주 어느 공간도 청정지역이나 미생물이 존재치 않은 공간은 없습니다. 다만, 그 미생물의 존재를 찾지 못하였거나 미생물에 대한 인식이 부족할 뿐이지요. 우리 고대 미생물학회에서는 그런 부분을 활성화시키려는 노력을 경주하고 있습니다."
"아! 박사님께서도 고대미생물학회의 일원이시군요. 저는 현대 미생물의 생성과정과 미생물의 미래에 미칠 영향에 대한 논문만 읽었어요. 죄송합니다."
그 때 옆에서 듣고 있던 여비서가 재빨리 톡 쏘았다.
"동양의 젊은 미생물학자는 쿠르타이스 박사에 대하여 잘 알지를 못하는군요. 쿠르타이스 박사님은 고대 미생물학회의 선임 연구원입니다. 가장 주목할 업적은 이집트에서 발굴 배양한 KE363 미생물이지요."
