"됐네. 클라라. 우리에게 커피 좀 가져다 주시요."
쿠르타이스 박사는 황급히 클라라의 말을 막았다. 그는 당황한 기색이 역력하였다.

김지영 박사는 초조해지기 시작했다. 그녀는 결코 그녀의 미션을 혼돈하지는 않았다. 단도직입적으로 물어야 한다고 다짐했다.
"쿠르타이스 박사님. 지금 동양의 몇 몇 국가는 정체를 알 수없는 미생물. 저희는 그것을 블루웜이라 명했어요. 그 블루웜으로 인하여 많은 무고한 생명들이 죽어가고 있어요. 저는 그 블루웜의 발생 원인을 찾아내어야 하고 또한 그 블루웜을 멸절 시킬수 있는 백신을 개발하여야 해요. 그 일로 쿠르타이스 박사님의 도움을 요청합니다."
쿠르타이스 박사는 김지영 박사의 말을 듣고 있었다. 클라라는 연한 푸른색 접시위의 오이스터를포크로 짚느라 애쓰고 있었다.
"블루웜이라 하셨습니다. 이미 소식을 통해 알고 있습니다. 홍콩에서는 변종 슈퍼박테리아라고 합디다. 김 박사께서 이곳에 오셨을때는 뭔가 근거가 있었을테지요?"
"예. 저는 박사님의 미생물학회 월간지에 실린 '고대 미생물의 발견과 그 정체' 라는 기고문을 읽었습니다."
"아~ 그것은 벌써 4년 전의 일입니다. 그 후 학계에서 관심이 없어 잊혀진 일이 되었습니다."
"맞아요. 읽었다 하더라도 지금 쯤 기억하는 사람은 거의 없을거예요. 저는 박사학위 논문을 쓰면서 박사님의 그 기고문을 참고했기에 잊을 수 없어요. 그 기고문에는 정체를 알 수 없는 미생물을 박사님이 이집트에서 발견하였다고 하셨어요.”
쿠르타이스 박사는 동양의 젊고 아름다운 미생물학 박사가 크고 맑고 까만 눈동자를 깜박이며 그의 잊혀지고 있던 열정을 물어오는 모습에 넋나간듯 하며 이야기하기 시작하였다.
"그건 아주 우연한 기회였지요. 사실은 그 때 발견된 미생물을 배양하여 새로운 어떤 것을 창조해 내려 했지요. 그 기고문 이후 많은 투자자들이 투자를 하였고"
"그로 인해 박사님은 KAMO (Kurtais Ancient MicroOrganism쿠르타이스고대 미생물 연구소) 라는 연구소의 소장겸 회사의 대표가 되셨지요?"
"맞아요. 잘 기억하고 계시는군요. 정말 고맙군요. 김지영 박사라 하셨지요?”
“예. 쿠르타이스 박사님.”
그는 눈을 지긋이 감았다 뜨며 김 박사를 바라 보았다. 그리고 회상을 하듯 입을 열었다.
“그들은 나와 함께 KAMO까지 죽였습니다. 그들은 내 연구 결과를 몽땅 차지했어요. KE363까지 탈취해 갔지요. 나는 죽을려고 했습니다. 모든게 끝났기 때문이지요. 그러나 나에게 구세주가 왔습니다. 그들에게 복수를 하라는... KE 363의 변종."
쿠르타이스 박사는 끝까지 말하지 않고 눈을 감았다. 그는 멀지도 않은 4년 전의 학자로서 사형선고나 다름없는 강퇴를 당한 것을 생각하며 이를 악 다물었다. 그의 두 손이 불끈지어졌고 그는 식탁을 내려쳤다. 그 때 놀라서 클라라가 소리쳤다.
“쿠르타이스! 무슨짓이야!”
김지영도 놀라고 쿠르타이스도 놀랐다. 클라라의 얼굴은 긴장으로 굳어있었다. 그러나 그것도 순간이었다.
“어머. 박사님. 너무 말씀을 많이 하셔서 긴장하셨어요. 좀 쉬어야겠어요.”
클라라는 얼굴에 미소를 지은 채 일어나 쿠르타이스 박사를 부축하려 하였다.
“아니야. 적어도 내 진심을 젊은 박사에게는 해 두어야 해.”
“박사님. 나중에 하셔도 되잖아요. 오늘은 이만 일어나시는게 좋겠어요.”
그녀가 입구쪽으로 고개를 돌려 싸인을 하자 곧 회색 정장을 한 2명의 남자가 와서 쿠르타이스 박사가 앉은 의자 좌우편에 섰다.
“그럽시다. 오늘은 내가 너무 긴장한 것 같오. 다음날 다시 만나게 되길 바랍니다.”
그들이 나가자 잠시 후 제임스가 들어왔다. 제임스는 레스토랑안으로 들어서며 김지영 박사를 먼저 찾았다. 친구가 보낸 자료에서 본 쿠르타이스 박사와 그 무리들만 나와서 황급히 차를타고 떠나고 지영의 모습은 보이지 않자 무슨 일이 벌어졌구나 생각하며 너무 안일하게 처신한 스스로를 탓하였다. 그가 식탁에 혼자 앉아있는 김지영 박사를 보고 안심하였으나 어질러진 식탁과 웨이츄리스가 부지런히 식탁 주변을 정리하는것을 보고는 걱정하였다.
"김지영 박사!"
제임스는 주변을 빠르게 살피며 가까이 가며 불렀다.
"예. 아저씨. 저는 별 일없어요."
지영이 황당한 표정을 지으며 두 어깨를 들썩이며 대답했다. 그리고는 고개를 쳐들고 제임스를 바라보았다. 식탁의 음식은 거의 그대로 있었다. 제임스는 웨이츄리스가 떠나자 쿠르타이스가 앉았던 자리에 앉았다. 지영이와 마주 앉았다. 그는 말없이 지영이를 보고 있었다. 지영이도 눈을 마주보고 있었다. 주변 파티오의 서너 식탁에 손님이 앉아 늦은 점심을 하고 있었다. 잠시 침묵이 흘렀다. 그 침묵을 지영이 깨었다.
"아저씨. 이상한 일이 있었어요."
"있는대로 다 말해 보십시요."
"쿠르타이스 박사님이 감시를 받고 있는 것 같아요. 클라라라고 하는 비서가 큰소리로 박사님의 말을 막았어요. 그리고 중요한 사실 하나를 얻었어요."
제임스는 뚫어질듯 김지영 박사의 초롱초롱한 크고 검은 눈을 바라보며 계속할 것을 재촉했다.
"그게 뭡니까?"
"KE363이라는 특이 미생물을 발견한 것 같아요. 쿠르타이스 박사님은 고대 미생물학회회원이예요. 그런데 투자회사로 부터 그 KE363을 강탈 당해서 복수심으로 불타고 있다 고 말하자 클라라가 큰 소리로 박사님의 이름을 부르며 더 말하지 못하게 막았어요.그리고 보디가드로 보이는 사람들이 와서 박사님을 데려갔어요."
"제 생각에는 우선 쿠르타이스 박사에 대하여 조사해야 할 것 같습니다. 그리고 사육돼지의 사료 공급과정에서 미생물이 어떤 영향을 미친 것이 아닌가도 조사해야 할 것 같습니다. 그렇게 했을 때근본 미생물의 정체를 알 수 있을테고 멸절시킬 백신을 만들 수 있을겁니다.”
"아저씨. 저도 그 쪽으로 생각을 했었는데... 지금은 그렇게 시간이 많지가 않아요."
"김 박사는 어떻게 swine feeding 쪽을 생각하게 되었습니까?"
"그건 역학조사에서는 당연한거예요. 요리과정과 공급과정 그리고 사육환경 그 마지막이 feeding이예요."
제임스는 놀랐다. 김지영 박사의 인과관계를 추적하는 논리적인 문제해결 방식에 대하여.
"추리학 박사라 하셔도 믿겠습니다. 쿠르타이스 박사는 전세계에 공급되고 있는 swine feeding의 40%를 감당하고 있는 회사에 관여하고있습니다. 특히 케나다 엘버타에 소재한 회사에서는 거의 전량을 아시아 국가들로 수출하고 있습니다."
"어머! 제임스 아저씨. 그런 것들을 어떻게..."
"중요한 것은 쿠르타이스 박사가 발견한 KE363에 대한 구체적이고 확실한 정보를 입수해야 합니다. 이 일은 빠르면 빠를수록 좋아요. 한국정부도 개입하려고 합니다. 상황이 복잡해지고 정부가 움직이는 것이 공개되면 현재 상태에서 무고한 사람들만 죽거나 누군가 더 높게 호가를 하게됩니다. 그리고 당분간 모든 것이 잠수하게 될 겁니다. 그것 모두를 막을 수 있는 사람이 김지영 박사입니다. 그것을 위하여 필요하거나 해야 할 것들을 알려주면 내가 다 감당할 것입니다."
제임스가 심각한 얼굴로 낮으며 힘있는 목소리로 말하였다. 지영은 제임스로 부터 계속 놀라운 사실들을 듣게 되어 두려움과 걱정이 엄습하였다.
"제임스 아저씨! 도대체 아저씨의 정체가 뭔지 먼저 말해 주세요. 말씀하시는 것 모두가 저를 놀라게 하고 있어요. 다음은 뭐가 나올지 궁금하고 걱정되어요."
"그건 그렇게 중요하지 않아요. 내가 김지영 박사를 믿듯이 저를 믿으면 됩니다. 자. 우리도 어서 여기를 떠납시다. 보여줄 곳이 있어요."
"이 일과 관계된 것인가요? 다른 일이나 관광으로 볼 것이라면, 안되겠는데요. 그럴 시간이 없어요."
"김지영 박사를 만나고 싶어하는 사람들이 있어요. 이 일의 신속하고 확실한 끝냄을 위하여 나도 만나보고 싶습니다. 어서 갑시다."
지영은 일어나며 제임스를 보았다. 그는 미소를 띄고 있었다. 안심하였다. 지영은 다시 물었다.
"이 일을 끝낼 수 있다고 말씀하셨어요? 끝낼 수 있다고 믿으시는 거예요?"
"인간은 그렇게 약한 존재가 아니잖습니까? 핵 전쟁이 일어나도 존재는 끝나지 않고 지속될 것인데... 그러나 하루속히 불필요한 인명살상을 막아야 합니다. 그것 때문에 김지영 박사가 이곳에 온 것 아닙니까? 자신을 가지십시요."
“인명살상이라고 하시잖아요? 그럼... 누가 이런 지독한 무작위의 살인을 한다는 의미예요?”
“예. 이건 평범하고 일시적인 바이러스나 미생물에 의한 사고가 아닙니다. 그건 김 박사가 더 심각하게 알고 있잖습니까? 이제 그 근원지 가까이 왔습니다. 하루 한시 빠르게 해결하는 것이 무고한 인명을 한사람이라도 더 구하는 길입니다. 그 해결방법에 가장 가까이 있는 사람이 김지영 박사입니다. 제가 혼신으로 돕겠습니다.”
그의 단호한 확신이 뭔가 김지영 박사의 가슴속을 뜨겁게 하였다. 믿음을 바탕으로 한 합리적인 행동은 목표한 것을 달성케 할 것이라 생각하였다. 그녀는 몸을 추스렸다. 옆에 든든한 우군이 있음을 다시 확인하니 힘이 솟았다. 한편으로는 좐 테이너 변호사가 추천했다는 사람이 제임스 아저씨가 아닌가 하는 의구심도 버리지 못하고 있었다.

소나타는 에메랄드빛 바다의 해안선을 따라 경쾌하게 달리다 국도를 벗어나 우측에 케스텔라(kastella)라고 이정표가 붙은 도로로 들어갔다. 한가하며 평화로운 주택가였다. 그 주택가 좌측에는 잘 정돈된 잔디의 정원이 있었고 그 끝 지점에 바다와 연결된 작은 개울이 흐르고 있었다. 이태리 포플러 나무무리는 개울을 따라 질서정연하게 자라고 있었다. 그 포플러를 넘어 개울에는 맑은 물이 흐르고 있었다.개울을 따라 무성한 잎을 피우고 있는 포플러(poplar)의 군집 사이로 난 길을 따라 진행하던 소나타는 바다와 닿는 한 곳에 자리한 허름한 창고같은 목조 2층 건물의 일층 게라지 속으로 들어갔다.
“기다리고 있었습니다. 키스토니우스의 제임스 리 맞지요?”
앞쪽에 2개의 큰 주머니가 달린 낡은 대님 원피스 작업복을 입고 턱수염을 기른 중년의 남자가 운전석으로 와서 말했다.
“만나서 반갑습니다. 이 분은.”
“압니다. 김지영 박사님. 꼭 만나고 싶었습니다. 한국에서 토론토를 경유하여 오셨지요? 저는 벨라리우스. 벨리스라고 불러주시길 바랍니다.”
그가 오른 손을 내밀며 수줍은듯 고개를 숙였다. 지영이 그 손을 잡았다. 제임스 아저씨가 있는데 설마 서투른 짓이야 하겠는가 하는 배짱이 생겼다.
“벨리스씨. 만나서 반가워요.”
지영은 그렇게 말하며 악수를 했지만, 제임스를 봤다. 이게 뭐하는 짖이람. 하는듯이... 지영이 궁금해 하는 것을 알기나 하듯이 그가 말했다.
“잠시 후 그리스 미생물 연구협회가 조사한 내용을 보고하겠습니다. 자. 아래로 가시지요. 시간이 많지 않습니다.”
지영은 놀라서 옆에 서있는 제임스를 올려봤다. 그는 고개를 끄득였다. 건물 앞에서 보면 지하였지만 지하실에서는 바닷물과 연결이 되어 바로 바다로 나갈 수 있게 닥(dock) 시설이 갖추어져 있었다. 한쪽편에는 보이지 않는 지하 장소에서 시작된 것 같은 레일이 깔려 있었고 그 레일 위에 4인용 보트가 있었다. 닥 넘어 반대편 거친 사각형 대리석으로 쌓은 벽에는 높이 2m 넓이 1m가 조금 넘는 철문이 있었는데 소위 밀실이라는 것이었다. 벨리스는 그 문을 열어서 잡고 두 사람이 들어 가길 기다리고 있었다. 안에는 좌측 벽에 4개의 50인치모니터가 붙어 있었고 우측 벽에는 더 큰 화면의 모니터 하나에 가득 아테네 시내가 담겨 있었다. 그 지하방 중간에 8각형으로 책상이 놓여 있었다. 그 각 책상위에는 디지틀 키 보드가 있었다. 실내는 어두웠다. 키보드와 화면은 발광하고 있었고 벨리스는 안경을 쓰고 있었다. 그들은 잠시 눈이 어둠에 익숙해지려고 애쓰고 있는데 전등이 켜졌다. 지하방은 의외로 깨끗하였다. 벨리스가 펜타곤 안에 들어가 키보드를 누르자 큰 화면은 엠브런스가 싸이렌을 울리며 급히 달려가고 있었고 장면이 바뀌자 데모 군중들의 외치는 모습이 나타났다. 그들은 프랭카드를 들고 있었다. '돼지고기가 그립다' '그리운 삼겹살’ ‘그들은 어디갔을까?’ ‘블루웜. 지워주세요’ ‘육마(肉魔)를 죽여라!’ 한국이었다.
"지금 이 장면은 현재 서울 코리아입니다. 다른 국가의 도시에서는 폭동이 발생하기도하였습니다. 다른 곳에서 이 상황들을 즐기는 조직이 있습니다. 그들은 축배를 들고 있을겁니다."
김지영 박사는 놀라 숨을 제대로 쉬지 못하였다. 블루웜이 단순한 미생물 변종이거나 아직 발견하지 못한 새로운 미생물이라 생각했지만, 이건 전혀 아니었다. 벨리스의 말로는 이러한 무작위의 대량 살인을 저지르는 단체가 있다는 것이었다. 김지영이 놀라서 제임스를 보았다. 이때 뭔가 같이 놀라서 물어주어야 하는 것 아닌가. 생각하였다. 그러나 침묵하고 있었다. 지영은 침묵하고 있을 수는 없었다.
“벨리스씨. 조직이 있다고 하셨어요? 그렇다면, 지금 이 상황이 우연이 아닌 계획된 사건이라는 것인가요? 그리고 지금 이곳은 어디예요?”
제임스가 옆에 있어서 겁없이 물었다. 그러나 물어야 했다. 벨리스는 다른 화면을 뜨게 하였다. 중국의 작은 도시같았다. 돼지를 땅속에 묻고 있었다. 다른 지역에서는불태우고 있었다. 그것들을 보는 지영은 두려웠다. 다른 장면으로 바뀌었다. 병원의 연구실이었다. 해부한 사체에서 멜트된 블루웜이 나타나며 그 부위가 파랗게 타 들어가며 녹고 있었다.
“저는 그리스 NIS (National Intelligence Service)의 특이 미생물 정보분석 요원입니다. 저희 NIS는 3년 전부터 쿠르타이스 박사를 주시하고 있었습니다. 모종의 단체로부터 거액의 돈이 유입된 것을 발견하였기 때문입니다. 그는 고대 미생물학자입니다. 얼마 전에는 특이 미생물학회에도 가입하였으며 KE363에 대한 특별한 연구와 그 결과를 활성화하기 위하여 캐나다의 몇 몇 회사에 관여하고 있습니다."
"잠깐만요! 그 모종의 단체라는 것도 미생물연구 단체인가요?"
벨리스는 제임스를 보았다. 그의 얼굴은 굳어 있었다. 그 사이 두 남자가 들어와 벨리스 옆에 서서 대화가 끝나기를 기다리고 있었다. 제임스가 지영을 보았다. 지영은 긴장되었지만, 예측치 못한 곳으로 빠져들고 있다는 느낌에 놀라고 있었다. '왜, 뭐가 잘못되었어요?' 하고 묻듯 두 어깨를 들썩이며 양 팔을 반쯤 올렸다 내렸다. 그 티없이 맑은 천진한 모습에 웃음이 나왔다. 제임스는 걱정되었다. 저런 아이가 엄청난 사건을 해결할 수가 있겠는가? 어떻게 이런 죽을 수도 있는 긴박한 국제 테러사건에 휩싸이게 되었는가? 하는 안타까움이었다. 제임스는 벨리스를 보며 고개를 끄득였다.
"예. 그렇다고 보아도 틀림이 없습니다. 세계의 전쟁은 칼과 창으로 화살로, 그리고 화약과 화학과 핵과 전자 컴퓨터로 진화 발전하였습니다. 이제는 그와 함께 미생물전으로 확산되고 있습니다. 인류는 먹기 위하여 산다고 하여도 무리가 없을 겁니다. 가장 중요한 것 중 하나인 먹거리를 이용하여 인류의 새 틀을 짜려는 테러조직이 있습니다. 리쎄펀 (Re set-up union)입니다. 지구위의 인류를 정리하자는 단체라고 봅니다. 우리도 아직 정확한 그들의 움직임을 잡아내지 못하고 있습니다. 그러나 지금 그들이 빨리 움직이는 것이 포착했습니다."
드디어 제임스가 입을 열었다. 그는 김지영 박사를 보았다.그가 지영의 부담을 덜어 준거다. 지영은 조금 숨을 쉴수 있었다.
“KE363에 대해서 말해주시지요?”
벨리스는 주저하지 않았다. 벨리스는 두 사람을 번갈아 보면서 말하기 시작하였다.
“KE363은 지구상에서는 발견되지 않았던 특이 미생물입니다. 그것은 EM이었습니다. 김지영 박사는 이미 알고 계시겠지만, EM은 "Effective Microorganisms"의 약자입니다. 유용미생물군 이라는 뜻이지요. 여기까지는 일반적이었고 다만 학자들에 의하여 발견되지 않았을 뿐입니다. 이집트의 한 고대 역사 유적 발굴장에서 발견된 특이 행체의 고대인 마미 내부에서 체취한 잔여물 속에서 특이 미생물을 배양 발견했던 쿠르타이스박사도 그렇게 알았고, 그는 그 미생물을 KE363으로 명명했습니다. 또한 그는 그가 발견한 그 KE363에서 변형 촉진미생물을 배양하는데 성공하였습니다. 이를 안 The Planet Investment 사는 오너이자 미생물 벤쳐 투자위원장인 지운 짜오쑹의 지휘아래 KE363을 흡수 유입하는 조건으로 쿠르타이스 박사를 회장으로 영입하였습니다. 부와 명예를 갑자기 받은 그는 더 이상 학자로서의 길을 가지 않고 경영자로서 활동하였습니다. 그러나 플레넷인베스먼트사는 정치적인 이유를 포함한 여러가지 요인으로 인터 아시아나 팍스 (Inter Asiana Fax)사와 KAMO (Kurtais Ancient Micro Organism쿠르타이스 고대 미생물 연구소 )에 대한 투자를 전격 정지하고 회장 겸 대표 연구원인 쿠르타이스 박사를 축출하였습니다. 그리고 영국 고고학계의 권위자인 엘란 파트로 박사를 영입했습니다.”
벨리스는 담배를 꺼냈다. 그리고김지영 박사를 보았다. 지영은 긴장된 상태에서 그의 말을 한 단어도 놓치지 않고 듣고 머리속에 입력하느라 정신을 그곳에 몰두하고 있었다. 제임스도 김 박사를 보며 피러앤잭슨을 한가치 꺼내 물었다. 그제서야 지영은 그들이 쉬고 싶어함을 알고 자리를 비켜 유리창가에 서서 한가롭게 떠있는 하우스내에 잘 만들어진 보트닥(BoatDock)을 보다가 천천히 걸어 다시 그들에게 왔다. 김지영 박사를 기다리던 그는 다시입을 열었다.
“3년 전, 쿠르타이스 박사는N.C.W. (New Created World)라는 이름의 연구소를 설립하였습니다. 실무를 전담하고 있는 디오나수스 박사의 지휘아래 줄기세포 복제형 원료인 엑쟈시카오acjasikao(asia china japan korea)보다 더 촉진성이 뛰어난 바이오그라파이딩 (Bio OrganicGrowing Feeding= Biorgrofiding)을 생산하여 캐나다 알버타 소재 ‘Good Morning World’ 피딩회사로 수출하였고 그 회사는 현재 ‘Diamond Blue’라는 상표를 붙인 스와인 피딩 (Swine Feeding=가축사료)을 전 아시아 국가들로 수출하고 있습니다. 여기서 끝입니다. 우리의 한계지요. 이제부터는 미생물과 생명공학의 전문가들이 해결해야 합니다.우리는 쿠르타이스 박사를 지원하고 있는 리쎄펀과 싸워야 합니다. 그들도 이미 김지영 박사가 이곳에 온 이유를 알고 있습니다. 이미 쿠르타이스 박사를 만나면서 노출된 것입니다. 이미”
그가 말을 연결하려는데, 좌측 천장 구석에 붙은 경보등에서 빨간불이 켜졌다. 벨리스가 키판을 두드리자 하우스의 외곽이 스크린에 나타났으며 소나타도 보였다. 그 뒷쪽에 검정색 SUV 두대가 먼지를 일으키며 급히 진입하고 있었다.
케머러는 초입의 나무위에 설치되어 있는 것 같았다. 벨리스가 눈짖을 하자 곁에 있던 두 사람이 급히 달려나갔다. 화면에는 한사람이 진입하는 차를 정지시키는 것이 보였다. 갑자기 벨리스가 김지영 박사를 보며 말했다.

“Okay, Clara. Please bring us some coffee.”
Dr. Kurtais hastily interrupted Clara. He clearly looked embarrassed.

Dr. Jiyoung Kim started to get nervous. She was never confused about her mission. She was determined to ask straight to the point.
“Dr. Kurtais. Currently, several countries in the East are infected with an unknown microorganism. We named it blue worm. Many innocent lives are dying because of the blue worm. I will find the cause of the blue worm. "We must develop a vaccine that can eradicate the blue worm. We are asking for Dr. Kurtais' help in this regard."
Dr. Kurtais was listening to Dr. Jiyoung Kim. Clara was struggling to pick an oyster on a light blue plate with a fork.
“You said it was a blue worm. I already know it from the news. In Hong Kong, it is called a mutant superbacteria. There must have been some basis when Dr. Kim came here, right?”
“Yes. I read your article ‘Discovery of ancient microorganisms and their identity’ in the monthly journal of the Society for Microbiology.”
“Ah, that happened four years ago. Since then, it has been forgotten due to lack of interest in academia.”
“That’s right. Even if you read it, there are probably very few people who remember it by now. I can’t forget it because I referenced your contribution while writing my doctoral thesis. In that contribution, you said that you discovered an unidentified microorganism in Egypt. ”
Dr. Kurtais began to speak, seemingly entranced by the sight of a young and beautiful Asian doctor of microbiology blinking his big, clear, black eyes and asking about his forgotten passion.
