“김 박사님! 백신을 만들 준비는 되어있습니까?”
지영은 당황하였다. 전혀 이런 상황을 예측하지도 못하였는데, 백신이라니. 물론 궁극적인 목적은 원인을 찾아 백신을 만드는 것이었지만, 상황이 두려울 정도로 너무 빨리 진행되고 있었다.
“아직 준비가 되지 않았어요? 어떻게 하지요?”
지영은 깊이 생각치 않고 말했다.
“그럴겁니다. 우리의 판단으로는 KE363이 열쇠일 것입니다. 그것을 찾아 확보해야 합니다. 그 후 변형 미생물을 찾아야 할 것입니다. 우리가 정리한 KE363에 대한 CD가 있습니다.”
그는 급히 말하며 스크린을 보았다. 스크린에는 네사람이 내려서 정차하려 했던 사람을 제압하고 있었다. 그 쪽으로 달려가는 두 사람이 보였다.
“제임스! 어서 김 박사와 저쪽의 보트를 타고 이곳을 벗어나십시요. 키는 여기있습니다.“
“알겠습니다. 우리가 여기 더 있을 이유는 없습니다. 하신 말씀 명심하겠습니다. 자. 그럼 나중에 또 뵙기를 바랍니다.”
제임스는 사태의 심각성을 느꼈다. 그러나 그에 대하여 크게 걱정하지는 않았다. 그들이 주저없이 이 독립가옥을 침범하는 것은 사전에 그들의 목표점과 목적을 가지고 있을 것이기 때문이다. 그들은 정부 소속 NIS를 무력으로 침범하지는 않을 것이다. 벨리스 또한 이런 경우를 대비해 두고있을 것이기 때문이다. 그러나 제임스와 지영이 직접 그들에게 노출되어서도 안될 것이라 판단하였다. 무엇보다 지영의 안전이 우선이었다. 그는 지영의 손을 잡았다. 그리고 입구의 반대쪽 창가의 문을 열고 뛰어나갔다.
“아저씨! 우리만 가요?”
이런 바보. 저들은 이곳 사람들이고 우린 객지인데... 제임스는 지영을 흴끗 보고는 손에 힘을 주고 달렸다. 그들은 보트에 타자 시동을 걸고 재빠르게 그곳을 초고속으로 벗어나자 뒤를 보고있던 지영이 소리쳤다.
“제임스 아저씨! 하우스가 불에 타고 있어요. 어떻해요. CD를 받지 않았어요! 제임스 아저씨!”
지영은 뒤 돌아 서서 제임스를 보며 소리치고는 불타는 하우스를 바라보았다. 제임스는 아무 말하지 않았다. 그리고 지영의 손을 잡아 끌어 옆 좌석에 앉혔다.
“보트 키와 함께 USB를 받았습니다. 잘 보관하셨다 필요할 때 이용하십시요. 뒤는 돌아 보지마시고...”
그는 김지영 박사의 왼손바닥 위에 손가락 한마디 정도 크기의 하얀색 유로슬라이드 방식의 USB를 올려 놓았다. 지영은 주먹을 꼭 쥐었다간 펴서 블루웜을 다루듯이 조심스럽게 오른손가락으로 집어 바지 오른쪽 주머니 위의 작은 동전주머니에 잘 넣었다. 그리고 뒤를 돌아 보지않았다. 제임스 아저씨의 말에 고마움을 느꼈다.
“지금부터 내가 돌아올 때까지 아무것도 만지지 마십시요. 전화나 인터넷을 사용해서는 안됩니다. 오는 전화도 받지 마십시요. 워토끼 외에는.”
“그럼 어떻게 있어야 해요? 언제 돌아오실 건데요?
“30분. 늦어도 1시간안에는 돌아 올 것입니다. 아직까지 이곳은 안전합니다. 리쎄펀들에게 드러나지 않아야 합니다. 아시겠습니까?”
“예. 그렇게할께요. 아저씨. 무서워요.”
지영은 정말 두렵고 무서웠다. 이런 전혀 겪거나 들어보지도 못한 상황에 빠져들 줄은 한번도 생각해 보지 않았던 것이다. 그럴 일이 생겨야할 이유가 전혀 없었다. 김지영 박사는 적어도 그렇게 생각하고 있었다.지영은 제임스를 올려다 보았다. 제임스가 다가와 지영을 안았다. 그리고 등을 토닥여 주었다.
제임스가 처음과 같이 그렇게 나가자 지영은 침대에 걸터앉아 유리창 넘어 반짝이는 지중해를 바라보았다. 한국과 캐나다의 상황이 궁금하였다.

"나다. 지금 즉시 작업준비해서 사무실로 와."
그는 휴대폰을 주머니에 넣고 테이블 의자에 앉으며 물었다.
"어떻게 침투할 겁니까?"
그는 흥미진진해 하는 모습이었다. 말투가 달라졌다.
"서둔다면 간단합니다. 당신의 목소리로 한번만 말해주면 됩니다."
"그렇게 간단합니까? 그런데..."
"그렇습니다. 김 박사가 그의 목소리를 들었으니 당신은 비슷하게만 하면 됩니다. 물론 구내전화를 사용하여 경비실로 하여야 합니다."
"걱정마십시요. 제임스. 할 수 있습니다. 그리고 내가 같이 가겠오. 부탁한 것은 이 가방 안에 있습니다. 차는 밖에 있습니다. 스포티지입니다."
"고맙소. 렌티스 가(街)의 깨스 스테이션 앞에서 만납시다. "

연일 계속되는 회의와 자료및 정보 조사와 탐색으로 지친듯한 목소리로 회의에 참석한 글로벌 특이 미생물 연구학회원들에게 그가 말했다.
“좀 전에 저는 쿠르타이스 박사의 기고 글을 다시 살펴보았습니다. 그리고 저는 그가 고대 미생물과 전혀 관계가 없는 싸이모도씨(Cymodocea) 과의 해초를 왜 찾으려 했는지가 궁금해 졌습니다. 누구아시는 분 계십니까?”
세포 내 또는 세포 간에 이루어지는 여러 가지 형태의 상호 작용들을 해석하는 과정을 기본으로 하여 연구하는고대분자생물학 (Ancient Molecular biology, 古代分子生物學)의 권위자인 더글라스 박사가 학회에서 보관 자료로 만들어 둔 생물도감을 펼치며 회의에 참석한 박사들에게 물었다. 그의 모습은 잠을 자지 못해서 찌들어 있었지만 눈동자는 빛났다. 그러나 모두 말이 없었다.
“지금 김지영 박사가 쿠르타이스 박사와 가장 가까운 곳에 있으니 당장 알려주는 것이 어떻겠습니까?”
“좋습니다. 일단 이메일로 알려주고 나는 다시 그 연관관계를 찾아 보겠습니다.”
윌 케일러 박사의 말에 동조한 더글라스 박사는 랩탑컴퓨터를 열었다.
“이왕이면, 가장 빠른 시간안에 전세계의 바다속에서 생존(生存)하고 있는유사종(Subtribes)을 다 찾아보는게 좋을 것 같군요. 제가 돕겠어요. 이럴 때 글로벌 학계 넷트웍을 이용하여야 겠습니다.”
특이 미생물학계의 괴짜 최고수로 알려진 엘레나 케플러 박사였다.
그들은 사태가 발생하고 있는 아시아 국가들의 미생물학계와 다급한 교신을하며 대책을 강구하고 있었다.

같은 시각, 쿠르타이스 박사와 디오나수스 박사 그리고 클라라를 태운 BMW 리무진은 이포드로모스와 디노스데노우스 스트릿 (Ippodromos+Dinosthenous)이 만나는 삼거리에서 남쪽으로 10분이 조금 넘게 더 진행하여 ‘그리스 고대유적 발굴협회’ 라고 쓴 대리석 싸인을 지나 100미터 쯤 다시 더 가서 리쎄펀이 입주하고 있는 6층 백색 건물 정문에 멈췄다. 건물은 지름이 500m 정도되는 원형의 잔디로 둘러싸여 있었다. 특이하게 긴사각형 각 모서리에서 시작된 약 5m 정도 크기의 이탈리아 포플라가 일렬로 원의 바깥까지 심어져 건물을 감싼채 무성한 잎을 잔바람에 나부끼고 있었다. 잔디도 녹색으로 잘 펼쳐져 있었다. 대체로 관리가 잘되고 있었다. 건물 출입문인 회전문을 통해서 약 10m쯤의 라비를 지나 엘리베이터까지 가는 동안 작업복을 입은 두 사람이 지나갔다. 엘리베이터는 4개가 있었다. 디오나수스 박사가 우측 마지막 엘리베이터로 가서 보턴을 눌렀다. 문은 기다렸던 것 같이 바로 열렸다. 엘리베이터 안의 벽면에는 4층과 6층 보턴만 있었다. 그는 6층 보턴을 눌렀다. 쿠르타이스 박사는 지금이 3번째 방문이었다. 방문때마다 느꼈던 두려움을 또 느끼고 있었다.
경호원들의 안내를 받아 6층 에리베이터 입구 맞은 편에 있는 육중한 철문을 열고 들어섰다.
리쎄펀연맹 회장은 턱수염을 기르고 있었다. 붉은 색이었다. 옅은 그린색의 안경을 쓰고 있었으며 은색의 정장 차림이었다. 전과는 다른 모습이었다. 그는 양쪽 8인용의 짙은 와인색 테이블 끝에 앉아 있었다. 그 테이블 양쪽으로 각각 4사람이 앉아있었다. 그들 모두 만났던 사람들이었다. 그들 뒷편 중간쯤에 언제 왔는지 클라라와 디오나수스가 두 손을 앞에 모은채 서 있었다. 그는 일어나지 않은 채 말했다. 본론부터 말하였다.
"쿠르타이스 박사. KE363의 새로운 변종 박테리아 개발을 서두셔야 겠오."
쿠르타이스 박사는 앉을 틈이 없었다. 정해진 자리도 없었다. 앉아도 좋다면 회장과 마주보는 테이블 끝이 될 터이었다. 그는 선채로 말하였다.
"회장님. 이제 KE363의 효과가 나타나기 시작하면서 수출 매출이 증가하고 있습니다. 좀 더 기다려주시지요."
"쿠르타이스. 지금 아시아 국가들의 상황을 피악하지 못하고 있군요."
"아닙니다."
쿠르타이스 박사가 황급히 말을 막았다. 회장 옆으로 가 서있던 클라라가 움직이려 하자 회장이 그녀의 손을 잡았다.
"자. 그쪽에 앉으시오. 그리고 계속하시오."
쿠르타이스 박사는 주저하다 그의 맞은 편 의자에 천천히 가서 앉았다. 감히 명령을 거역할 분위기가 아니었다.
"아세안 국가들에게서 발생하고 있는 사태는 우리측 공급제품에 의한 의도적 사태일 수 있습니다. 우리는 그 사태를 새로운 제품을 공급할 기회로 이용하여야 하며 그 준비를 하고 있습니다."
"우리는 더 심각한 사태를 기대하고 있오. 쿠르타이스 박사의 계획이 순조롭게 되길 바라며 그러한 사태가 더 심각하게 전세계로 확산되길 바라고 있오."
"회장님. 그렇게되면 인류의 멸망 가까이 가는겁니다."
"이미 박사님은 수 백의 아세안들을 죽였고 그 살인은 계속되고 있잖아요."
회장 옆에 서있던 클라라가 쿠르타이스에게 가까이 걸어가며 말했다. 그녀는 쿠르타이스의 의자 뒤에 서서 두 팔을 그의 어깨에 올리고 부드럽게 주물렀다. 쿠르타이스는 피하지 않았다. 클라라는그가 경직되어 있음을 느꼈다.
"그 준비가 kE363의 변종인 KE373의 조속한 개발아니요? 촉진제를 사용해서라도 그 계획을 서둘도록 하시오. 우리가 도울 것이 있으면 즉시 알려주시오. 각 지역과 국가의 조직들은 필요하든 그렇지 않든 적기에 관여할 것이오. 그리고 쿠르타이스 박사. 오늘밤은 당신을 위한 연회를 열 것이오. 함께 내일을 위하여 축하합시다. 당신은 우리 연맹의 리더들을 만나게 될 것이오."

“Dr. Kim! Are we ready to make a vaccine?”
