그녀는 잠깐 지영이의 얼굴을 봤다. 서로 적개심은 없었다.
"제가 다시 오게되면 그 때 돌려 드릴 것 같아요."
지영이 놓칠리가 없었다. 그건 제 엄마를 틀림없이 닮았다.
"그 때가 언제인데요?"
"저도 더는 몰라요. 즐거운 여행되세요."
그녀는 곧 돌아갔다. 비행기는 하강을 하고 있었다.
"제임스. 저 분이 즐거운 여행되길 바라네요 했어요. 제임스 아저씨. 즐거운 여행되세요."
"지영아. 나를 놀리는거지?"
"예."
제임스는 눈을 감았다. 지영이는 자기의 전문분야만 벗어나면 아직 프레시(fresh)한 어린 처녀이다. 그러나 지금 세계가 가장 필요로 하는 M.I.P.(the mostest important people)이다. 저 지영이를 하루속히 산 채로 김선애 앞에 세워야 하는데 생사가 불확실한 상황에 둘 다 놓여있다. 그는 키스가 준 쪽지의 글을 기억했다. 그는 곁에서 눈을 감은 제임스를 해부하듯 보고있는 지영을 보려고 눈을 떳다.
"아저씨. 저는 아저씨가 누군지 무엇하는 사람인지 정말 궁금해요."
제임스의 얼굴 가까이 두었던 얼굴을 조금 들어 막 눈을 뜬 제임스에게 숨쉴 기회없이 물었다. 제임스는 대답대신 고개를 숙여 지영의 신발과 바지 그리고 윗도리를 보았다.
"아저씨. 이 위급한 상황에 왜 저를 그렇게 살펴보세요?"
순간 제임스는 지영의 어머니 김선애를 본 것 같다는 느낌을 받았다.
"응. 김지영 박사 모습을 익혀두려고."
"푸하하하. 저는 그 말 못믿어요. 솔직히 말하세요."
지영은 예기치 않은 제임스의 대답에 그만 웃음이 터졌다. 제임스는 본인도 그렇지만 지영이의 옷 차림도 염려되었다. 이 비행기에서 내리는 순간부터 그들은 인질로 대할 것이다. 또한 정확하지는 않지만 레이슨 공항이라면 작은 규모일 것이고 퀘벡에서 북쪽이라면 라버도스와 인접해 있는지 아니면 허드슨만과 인접해 있는지 감이 잡히지 않았다. 그러나 퀘벡주의 북쪽은 맞다. 엄청 추울 것이다. 비행기에서 내리자 곧 기회를 노려야 한다. 혼자가 아니고 지영이와 함께. 키스와 벨리스가 도와주길 기대 할수도 없다.

곧 머리 위 안전벨트의 싸인에 불이 켜지고 비행기는 서서히 하강하기 시작하였다. 창 밖으로 보이는 공항의 활주로와 인근의 마을을 알리는 전등이 없었다면 눈덮힌 벌판으로 생각 할 정도로 많은눈이 내리며 쌓이고 있었다. 이미 이곳은 깊은 겨울이 시작된 것이고 그들이 착륙하는 곳은 작은 로칼공항이었다. 비행기는 심한 진동을 겪고는 다행이 제대로 착륙하였다. 비행기는 격납고와 관제탑이 있는 반대편으로 서서히 움직였다. 그리고 멈추었다. 아마도 그들 조직 우두머리들이 내리는 것 같았다. 그들은 이쪽 중간실로 오지않고 바로 내렸다. 제임스는 특실로 들어가는 계단 아래에 낡은 국방색 작은 군용가방이 세개 있는 것을 발견하고 조심스럽고 재빠르게 움직여 가서 세개의 가방 중에서 다행이 흰색 방한복을 찾았다. 그것을 본 제임스는 놀랐다.

제임스는 인도네시아 반둥의 한국계 섬유회사가 은밀히 한국정부의 지원으로 개발한 일을 도와준 적이 있었다. 그래서 그 섬유에 대하여는 잘 알고 있었다.이 조직이 그 섬유를 이용한 방한복을 착용하고 있는 것이다. 어찌 놀라지 않을 수 있겠는가. 제임스는 두 벌을 꺼내어서 지영이가 최대한 추위에 견딜 수 있도록 그 방한복을 입게하였다. 경호원과 병사들의 것과는 다른 눈과 같은 흰색 원피스 동계 위장복이었으며 등에는 손바닥만한 크기의 그들 조직을 알리는 표시가 붉은 색과 짙은 초록과 황 색이 섞여 자수(embroidery)되어있었다. 제임스는 지영이의 방한복 안에 청바지와 터틀넥 스키셔츠와 면 점퍼를 그대로 입게하였고 그 주머니마다 중요하다 싶은 것들을 챙겨 넣게 하였다. 후미쪽에서도 연맹병사들이 방한복으로 갈아입고 있었다. 그들은 경호원들과는 또 달랐다. 어려보였다. 8명이 움직이고 있었으나 제임스에 대해서는 관심을 두지 않았다. 명령이 떨어지지 않은 것이다. 제임스는 그 쪽으로 가서 흰색 양털 방한화를 두개 가져왔다. 그들은 긴장된듯 보였으며 제임스의 행동에 어떤 의구심을 품지 않았다. 그렇게 하여도 되는 것으로 알고 있었으며, 아직... 두사람에 대한 명령이 없었다.
"제임스. 몸이 너무 둔해요. 나 이런거 싫은데..."
최첨단 과학의 소재로 가볍고 강하고 완전 방수인 방한복을 입고서도 지영은 때를 써듯 칭얼거렸다.
"지영아. 몸을 움직여서 무게와 친숙해지도록 해. 그리고 이 방한화 신어봐."
그는 지영이의 뒤뚱한 모습을 봤지만 웃지는 않았다. 다행이 가져온 방한화는 지영이 발에 잘 들어가 맞았다.
"아저씨. 어때요? 멋지죠. 아주 좋아요."
보기에 좋았다. 저 정도면 잠시 견뎌낼 수 있을거라 생각했다. 방한복은 앞 가슴쪽에 지퍼가 있었다. 그 지퍼는 아랫배까지 내릴수 있게 되어있었다. 병사들의 것과 다른 것은 양털이나 여우털 등이 붙은 후드가 없다는 것이다. 두 사람이 입고 있는 방한복은 목둘레로 챠이나 스타일의 칼라가 올라와 있었고 그 속에 방한모를 숨겨두고 있는 완벽한 방한복이었다. 화장실에서도 쉽게 지퍼를 내려 하부까지 벗을 수 있게 하였으며 재질이 가볍고 튼튼하였다.
"응. 아주 보기좋은데. 백설공주같다."
"이히히. 정말요? 아저씨가 그렇다면 맞는거예요."
"지영아. 지금부터는 어떤 일이 있어도 내 곁을 떠나지 않도록해. 한 눈을 팔거나 관심꺼리에 빠져 헤어져선 안돼."
지영은 기분이 그나마 좀 좋아졌는데 제임스의 그 말에 다시 현실로 돌아왔다. 두려움이 다시생기고 암담하였다.
"예. 알았어요. 근데 제임스. 언제 끝나죠?"
어휴- 저걸. 하며 쥐어박고 싶었지만, 백설공주를 어쩌랴. 생각하며 미소짖고 말았다.
"지영아. 지금부터 우리는 심각한 상황에 빠질 수 있어. 그러니 절대 마음 약하게 가지지마라. 알았지? 그리고 당황하지마. 어떠한 곤경에 처해 있더라도 헤어날 방법은 있어. 그걸 못 찾을 뿐이야. 내말 알아들었지?"
"예. 알겠어요. 명심할께요."
그 때 찬바람이 기내로 들어왔다. 그와동시 두 명의 경호원과 쿠르타이스 박사가 왔다.
"자. 이제 움직여야 하오. 저들을 따라가서 헬기를 타시오. 먼저 레이슨 타운의 간이 공항에 내려 컨테이너로 포트 죠지로 갈 것이요. 그곳에서 김지영 박사는 나와 백신생산을 완성하면 됩니다."
쿠르타이스 박사가 앞서 나가자 지영은 제임스의 손을 잡았다. 같이 함께 간다는 안도의 마음에서일 것이다. 지영이 먼저 쿠르타이스 박사 뒤를 따라 내려가고 그 뒤를 제임스가 따랐다. 쿠르타이스 박사가 앞서 가는 쪽에 두대의 헬기가 눈바람을 일으키고 있었다. 그때 예기치 않은 일이 일어났다. 아까보 소총을 든 두명의 경호원이 제임스 앞을 막았다.
"당신은 우리와 함께 트럭으로 간다."
지영이 뒤를 돌아보며 달려오려 하였으나 쿠르타이스 박사와 경호원이 지영을 막았다. 지영은 소리쳤지만 눈보라 속에 묻혀 들리지 않았다. 제임스는 난감함을 느꼈다.
여기서 헤어지면 다시 만나기 어렵다. 어쩧든 찾아가야 한다. 제임스는 지영이가 탄 헬리콥터가 떠나는 것을 보았다. 떠나는 헬기 우측에 커다란 입간판이 있었다. 이곳이rassion city였다. 그리고 서쪽으로 흐르는 제임스강은 허드슨 베이로 들어간다. 그 입구에 포트 죠지가 있었다. 여름날 카약이나 바이커 드라이빙 안내지도였다. 제임스는 재빨리 그 지도를 익혀 머리속에 넣었다. 이제 그들이 어디로 갈지 짐작 할 수 이었고 지영이 어디에 있을지 감이 잡혔다. 그들은 격납고 앞에 세워진대형트럭의 뒤 40ft짜리 회색 컨테이너 안에 제임스를 타게 했다. 그 트럭 앞과 뒤에 앞 뒤로 4명이 탈 수 있는 suv 같은 검은색 차가 에스코트하려고 시동을 걸어놓고 출발을 기다리고 있었다. 제임스가 컨테이너에 있음을 확인한 한 병사가 뒷문을 닫았다. 그들은 거의 말을 하지 않았다. 간혹 들리는 말은 불어였다. 이곳은 퀘벡주에 속했다.

과연 중간 어디쯤에 트럭스탑이나 휴게소가 있을지 짐작키 어려웠다. 눈 많은 겨울이 이미 시작되었기에 도로는 대부분 막힐 것이다. 희망이라면 스키두를 위한 모텔겸 휴게소가 한 두 곳쯤 있을 것이다. 그들 또한 그곳에서 더욱 경계를 할 것이다. 그러나 그곳이 기회이다. 제임스는 그 동안 비즈니스를 위하여 캐나다를 돌아 다니며 머물렀던 숱한 종류의 휴게소를 생각했다. 그는 슈샤이너가 첫 사업은 아니었다. 처음에는 한국의 특이한 중소기업 제품들을 수입해서 백화점안에 매장을열고 리테일 판매를 하는 사업을 했던 비즈니스 맨이었다. 그때 그는 사업의 확장을 위하여 캐나다의 여러 도시를 직접 차를 운전하며 다녔었다. 퀘벡의 휴게소들도 비슷할 것이다. 도로 한쪽에 진입로가 있고 도로를 따라 들어가면 열 두 서너개의 방문이 있는 단층 모텔과 그 옆에 깨스 스테이션과 컨비니언스가 있을것이다. 그는 그렇게 생각을 하며 가상 씨나리오를 만들기 시작하였다. 누가 뭐라고 할 수가 없었다. 그것은 그의 삶의 방법 중 하나였다.
