김선애는 정 박사와 함께 캐나다 특이 미생물학회 사무실에서 그들과 초조히 기다리고 있었다. 특이 미생물학회 내부는 선애로서는 처음 보는 장면이었다. 벽마다 켜진 대형 화면과 박사들과 그 보조원들의 경직된 얼굴로 바삐 움직이고 있는 모습들. 컴퓨터 앞에서 통화하느라 분주한 사람들도 많았다. 선애가 공항에서 만난던 윌 박사도 화면 앞 컴퓨터에 매달려 있었다. 김선애와 정인구에게 관심을 가지는 사람도 없었다. 혼잡속의 외로움이었다. 정 박사가 잠시 자리를 떠나자 선애는 지영이도 티유니버스를 가지고 있다는 생각이 나자 그녀의 티유니버스를 열었다. 며칠 전에 맛치를 확득하여 토론토의 이 특이 미생물학회로 가져오라고 한 딸 지영의 전화번호가 다행히 있음을 발견하고 자동버턴을 눌렀다. 맛치가 여기에 도착하여 있는데 정작 그 맛치를 주문한 지영은 물론 제임스도 여기에 없었다. 걱정되고 궁금하였다.

쿠르타이스 박사는 헬기에 타고 있지만 추위를 느꼈다. 또한 긴장된 상황에다 혼란스럽기까지 하여 가방에 든 지영이의 티유니버스가 작동하고 있음을 알지 못하였다. 지영은 뒷좌석에 쿠르타이스 박사를 마주보고 앉아 눈을 감고 있었다.
"윌 박사! 윌 박사! 윌 박사!"
선애는 티유니버스의 스크린을 보다가 놀라서 건너편 컴퓨터에 앉아 벽 화면을 조종하고 있는 윌 케일러 박사를 불렀다. 얼마나 크고 절박한 목소리였는지 상황실이 쩡 쩡 울렸다. 모두가 하던 일을 멈추고 소리나는 쪽을 보았다.
"이리 와 보세요! 지영이가 캐나다에 있어요!"
김선애가 외치는 소리에 모두 놀라며 그 중 몇 몇과 윌 박사가 달려와 선애 주변에 모여 티유니버스의 빨간 점이 움직이는 것을 보고 있었다.
"지금 움직이고 있는 이 포인터가 무엇인지, 왜 김지영 박사가 캐나다에 있다는 것인지 설명해 주실 수 있습니까?"
차분히 영어를 다 듣고 설명할 정도가 되지는 않았다. 말이 제대로 아니, 영어가 놀라서 제대로 나오지 않았다. 이제는 김선애가 당황하였다. 그때 정 박사가 돌아와 상황을 파악하고는 김선애를 구하기 시작하였다.
"이것 최첨단 휴대폰이라는 티유니버스맞지요? 이 빨간점이 무엇이고 왜 김지영 박사가 캐나다에 있다는 것인지 말해 달랍니다."
선애는 그때서야 정 박사를 봤다. 한숨을 돌린 김선애는 차분하게 말하였다.
"이 휴대폰은 삼성이 개발한 최고 성능의 휴대폰 티유니버스 맞아요. 지구 어디에서든 통화와 위치추적들을 위성에 의해서 할 수 있어요. 며칠 전에 지영이 그리스에서 이와같은 티유니버스로 전화했어요. 그러나 한국을 떠나기 전에 가지고 있던 전화번호는 아니었어요. 좀 전에 메모된 전화번호와 접속했는데, 락(lock)이 되어있어도 접선이 되었기에 위치 추적이 시작되었어요. 이곳이 캐나다 퀘벡 북쪽이라고 지도에 나와있어요."
지도는 한글로 표시되어 있지만 틀림없는 캐나다 퀘벡 북쪽이었다. 뉴 펀드랜드 앤 라버도스 서쪽편에 아주 작은 빨간 점이 움직이고 있었다.
“아니. 그리스에 있어야 할 김지영 박사가 어떻게해서 캐나다 퀘벡쪽에 있다는 것인지 이해가 되지 않습니다. 현재까지 접선이 끊어져 연락이 되지 않고 있었습니다. 누가 이 상황을 이해 할 수 있겠습니까?”
윌 케일러 박사는 초조하고 답답한 표정으로 모여든 박사들을 보며 물었다. 그들에게 물어보았지만, 윌 케일러 박사 스스로도 이해가 되지 않았다. 그리고 화가났다. 블루웜의 백신기전을 만들어 하루 속히 돌아와야 할 김지영 박사가 뜬금없이 퀘벡에 있다니. 그리스에서 퀘벡이 8천키로가 넘는데...
"그럼, 김지영 박사가 비행기를 타고 왔다는 것이잖습니까?"
그는 다시 놀라서 티유니버스 화면을 연결한 벽스크린을 보고 있는 회원박사들을 보며 물었다.
"아마도 그럴겁니다. 지금도 움직이고 있습니다. 저것이 김지영 박사가 맞다면... 혼자는 아닐 것입니다."
엘레나 커플러 박사가 이마를 만지며 심각한 표정으로 말했다.
"우선 그 붉은 포인트가 김지영 박사인지 아닌지를 먼저 확인해야 잖아요?"
뚫어져라 스크린을 보며 듣고있던 김선애가 말했다. 천천히 또박 또박 영어로 말했다.
"그 전에... 어떻게 불러야 하지요?"
"김선애예요. 김지영 박사의 어머니."
"좋아요. 킴이라 부르죠. 저는 닥터 더글라스입니다. 킴께서 처음에 어떻게 저 붉은 포인터를 보고 김지영 박사라고 생각하였지요?"
스크린 모니터를 보고있던 고대분자생물학의 세계최고 권위자인 더글라스 박사가 뭔가 생각하듯하며 물었다. 선애는 검고 큰 눈을 동그랗게 뜨고 닥터 더글라스를 바라보았다. 모두가 김선애의 입을 보고있었다. 드디어 선애는 입을 열었다. 천천히 또박 또박 영어로 말하기 시작했다.
"제가 한국으로 맛치를 구하러 갔던 것은 그리스에 있던 김지영 박사가 그렇게 해야 한다기에 가서 맛치를 구해서 왔어요. 그때 김지영 박사가 사용한 전화가 세계 최초로 개발되어 사용하기 시작한 티유니버스였어요. 지금 보시는 이것과 같은 기종이예요. 떠날 때 한국에서 막 구입한 지니어스(천재) 폰이지요. 그것은 마지막 통화 후 락을 해 놓아도 마지막 통화자는 상대편의 종적 추적이 가능해요. 락 기능은 프라이버시 퍼블릭 스페셜 이렇게 3개를 할 수 있어요. 또한 언제 어디에서든 우주에 떠 있는 위성을 이용해 통화가 가능해요. 파워는 엑스 이리티뉴엄이라는 벳터리를 사용할 수 있고 솔라로도 사용 가능한 듀얼씨스텀이고 1년 이상 태양 아래에서는 무한대 파워워킹이 됩니다. 영상 70도 영하 60도 사이에서 워킹되어요. 더 많은 기능이 있지만 우선 이 정도입니다. 그런데... 전화번호는 한국회사에서 받은 번호가 아니예요."
김선애는 이마에 송글 송글맺힌 땀방울을 손바닥으로 훔치며 둘러서서 듣고있는 박사들을 보았다. 모두들 김선애의 차근 차근 천천히 똑 떨어지게 말한 영어에 대해서도 놀랐다.
"아직 물음에 대한 답은 하지 않았습니다."
뒷편에서 유심히 듣고있던 남자 박사가 말했다. 김선애는 미소지었다.
"예. 지금까지는 티유니버스의 몇가지 기능에 대하여 말씀드렸어요. 저 붉은 빛의 포인터는 저의 딸 김지영 박사가 그리스에서 저에게 맛치에 대한 요구의 통화를 한후 락을 했던 하지 않았던 나타나게 되는 종적이예요. 소유자가 위치추적 버턴을 꺼지 않으면 계속 위치가 남아요. 그래서 저는 저 티유니버스가 누구것이든 마지막에 저하고 통화한 사람의 종적이예요. 그리고 그 마지막은 김지영 박사입니다. 그러므로 저 종적은 김지영 박사예요. 뭔가 잘못되고 있는 것 같아요. 어서 확인하고 구해주세요."
그만 김선애는 흐느끼고 말았다. 정인구 박사는 멍하니 창밖만 보고 있었다. 그가 할 수 있는 것은 안타깝게도 없었다.
"지금 저 위치는 허드슨 베이 동쪽 그리고 퀘벡 북쪽 또한 뉴펀드렌드 앤 라버레도 서쪽입니다. 저 빛이 김지영 박사가 맞다면 어쩌서 저기에 있는 걸까요?"
50대 중반인 Damianus 박사가 황당한 표정으로 모두에게 물었다. 그렇다. 캐나다 특이 미생물학회 박사들은 전혀 짐작 할 수 없는 위급한 상황에 김지영 박사와 제임스가 처해 있다는 것을 알 수가 없었다. 그러나 지금 김지영 박사는 생사의 위기에 처해 있는 것이다. . .

"저 남자는 굳이 본부까지 데려갈 필요가 없잖습니까? 중간에서 없애 버리겠습니다."
눈보라로 시야가 분간키 어려운 길을 헤치며 나아가는 첫번째 SUV 뒷좌석에 타고있는 팀 리더일 것 같은 작은 체구의 안경낀 남자를 보며 총신이 짧은 AK 자동소총을 무릅에 올려두고 앞을 보던 흰색터번을 쓴 덩치가 큰 남자가 말했다.
"자네 나 나는 그럴 권한이 없네. 사고사가 되면 몰라도. 우리의 거처가 어차피 죽을 놈에게도 알려져서는 안된다고 생각하네. 특히 기사화될 문제는 만들지 않는 것이 좋아. 그건 조직 유지의 기본이야. 무슨뜻인지 알겠나?"
"예. 알겠습니다."
그는 입가에 미소를 띄며 운전수를 봤다. 운전하던 같은 색의 터번을 쓴 자가 그 미소를 미소로 받으며 천천히 조심스럽게 가던 속력에서 다시 더 속력을 줄였다. 큰 덩치의 남자는 고개를 돌려 뒤를 보며 손바닥을 이마에 댓다. 그리고 그는 문을 열고 그 문을 잡은채 바닥에 닿은 발을 차와 같은속도로 움직이다 문을 잡은 손을 놓고 힘주어 문을 닫고 천천히 뛰었다. 가속을 줄이고 있는 것이다. 제대로 훈련을 받은 덩치 큰 놈이었다. 그는 컨테이너가 지나가자 몸을 조금 굽혀 그 뒤를 역시 천천히 따라오는 suv의 오른쪽 문에 접근하여 열어 준 문을 잡고 탓다.
"첫번째 트럭스탑에서 컨테이너안의 놈을 제거한다. 흔적없이."
그 suv안에는 같은 복장을 한 두 사람이 있었다. 그들도 역시 총신이 짧은 AK를 다리 사이에 두고 있었다. 그들은서로 고개를 끄득였다. 컨테이너 뒤를 따르는 차안에는 금방 탄 그 놈과 3명이 있었다.

윌 박사는 현명하였다. 그리고 냉정하였다. 그는 블루웜을 박멸할 수 있는 새로운 기전 즉 메카니즘이 우선이라고 생각하였다.
"자. 좋습니다. 좋아요."
그는 대형 스크린 앞에서 붉은 포인트를 바라보며 걱정하고 있는 회원 박사들을 향해 손뼉을 치며 시선을 모았다. 모두가 그 박수 소리를 듣고 정신을 차려 윌 박사 주변으로 모였다.
"자. 저 붉은 포인트는 담당자가 계속 지켜보기로 하고, 우리는 맛치에서 새로운 물질의 융합작용을 확인하고 체취하고 배양하며 김지영 박사가 가져 올 쿠르타이스 박사의 기전을 위하여 준비합시다. 우리는 한시라도 지체할 수 없습니다."
"윌 박사님!"
김선애가 주춤하면서도 당당하게 윌박사를 불렀다.
"그러면 저 붉은 포인트의 김지영 박사를 확인하지도 않고 포기한다는 의미인가요?"
그녀는 영국식 발음이 섞인 영어로 천천히 그러나 단호한 의지가 담긴 목소리로 물었다. 김선애는 딸인 김지영 박사의 생사가 걱정되었지만, 가슴에 숨겨둔 더 큰 걱정은 제임스의 생사였다. 지금 상황은 제임스에 대한 것은 아니었다. 그의 생사는 전혀 고려되지 않았다. 그것을 찾아 묻고 할 그런 상황이 아니었다.
"포기 할 수는 없습니다. 저 붉은 포인트가 무엇인지 다른 경로로 확인할 것입니다. 김지영 박사로 밝혀지기 전까지는 서두를 수가 없다는 것입니다. 그리스 측과 지금 연락하고 있습니다. 그리고 위성본부에 저 점을 확인해 주길 요구했습니다. 우리는 그것에 대하여 기다려야 합니다."
"윌 박사님! 만약 저 붉은 포인트가 김지영 박사라면 어떻게 할 건가요?"
데미아누스 박사가 손을 들며 윌 박사에게 물었다. 그는 50대 중반이다.
"구해야 합니다. 김지영 박사가 살아서 우리 곁에 돌아와야 합니다. 확인되면 구조대에 긴급구조를 의뢰할 것입니다."
윌 박사의 강하고 단호한 의지가 담긴 말에 모두가 고개를 끄득이거나 탄성을 질렀다.
"윌 박사님! 그 구조대에 저가 있어야 합니다. 저는 거추장스럽게 하지는 않을 것 입니다. 제가 한국에서 어떤 조직이 맛치를 가로채려는 것을 막고 무사히 돌아왔습니다. 그래서 그 구조대에 저가 꼭 있어야 해요. 약속해주세요."
김선애의 목소리는 젖었지만 강한 의지의 요구에 모두를 놀라며 고개를 끄득였다. 그러나 윌 박사의 얼굴이 갑자기 잠깐 긴장된 것을 느끼거나 안 사람은 없었다. 그는 이내 냉정을 찾았다.
"킴! 방금 한국에서 맛치를 뺏으려는 조직이라고 했습니까?"
윌박사는 두 눈을 김선애에게 고정한 채 대답을 재촉하였다.
"예. 그래요. 정확히는 모르지만 한사람은 중동계였습니다. 한국은 비교적 치안상태가 좋고 총 등 무기를 소지할 수가 없어서 무력을 사용할 수가 없었지만, 지독한 추격으로 맛치를 탈취하려 했어요. 맛치가 자라고 있는 저의 고향 항구에서 서울의 인천공항까지 그들이 추적했지만, 저의 친구와 오빠들이 도와줘서 이곳까지 무사히 가져 올 수 있었어요."
그 말을 들은 엘레나 케플러박사가 놀라워하며 말했다. 그녀는 50대 초반이었으며 특이 미생물 학계에서는 괴짜 최고수로 알려져 있었다.
"누군가 맛치를 탈취하려 했다는 것은 그 맛치의 성분이나 특이 미생물에 대하여 알고 있다는 의미입니다. 그렇다면 블루웜에 대해서도 알고 있다고 생각할 수 있잖습니까?"
"엘레나 박사님. 그건 너무 비약해서 앞서가는 것 아닌가요?"
윌 박사가 말했다. 그의 목소리는 아지못할 어떤 것에 대한 공포로 떨렸다.
"윌 박사님! 짐작하고 있는 것을 공유할 수 없을까요? 뭔가 알고 있는 것 같습니다."
그때 옆에서 윌 박사를 유심히보며 말을 듣고있던 더글러스 박사가말했다.
"아직은 아닙니다. 짐작은 하고 있지만..."
"그 짐작이 뭔가요?"
뒷편에서 다시 그 박사가 숨쉴틈을 주지않고 물었다. 그녀는 대답을 듣기도 전에 또 다른 놀랄만한 질문을 던졌다.
"윌 박사께서는 혹시 지금 벌어지고 있는 지옥같은 사태가 특이 미생물과 관계가 있으며 어떤 조직이 화학무기같이 미생물무기로공격하고 있다 생각하시는 것은 아닙니까?"
윌 박사는 질문한 그를 봤다. 젊은 더글러스 박사였다. 윌 박사는 눈을 감았다. 그 순간 컴퓨터 앞에 앉아 있던 남자 직원이 윌박사를 불렀다.
"윌 박사님. C.S.I.S.에서 우리 협회로 문의가 왔습니다."
모두가 그 쪽으로 머리를 돌렸다.
"말하세요. 어떤 문의입니까? 협회로 보낸 공식문의 라고 하면 다들 알고 있어야 합니다."
윌 박사가 화면쪽으로 가며 물었다.
"쿠르타이스 박사와 김지영 박사에 대하여입니다."
"뭐라고. 김지영 박사? 쿠르타이스 박사? 이유가 뭡니까?"
"오늘 그리스에서 퀘벡으로 입국하였답니다. 그들은 특이 미생물학회 회원 박사들이라며 다른 일행과 함께 최종 도착지가 레이슨 타운으로 하여 입국하여 수속을 마치고 공항을 떠났답니다."
그 말을 들은 사람들은 모두가 놀랐다. 이제 쎄틀라이트 맵 속에 나타난 붉은 포인터가 김지영 박사임이 확실해졌고, 쿠르타이스 박사가 함께 있다면 블루웜 백신관계일 것이다.
"그런데, 저 붉은 포인터가 김지영 박사가 맞다면 왜 우리에게 연락을 하지 않을까요?"
비교적 젊은 더글러스 박사가 약간 흥분된 목소리로 윌 박사에게 물었다.
"저도 그 점을 생각하고 있습니다."
"여러분! 저는 김지영 박사가 어려운 상황에 처해 있어서 스스로 연락을 취하지 못하고 있다 생각해요. 김지영 박사가 직접 저에게 부탁한 맛치인데 누군가 알고 한국에서 탈취하려 했어요. 그러면 김지영 박사가 그와 연관된 어떤 조직에 잡혀 있지나 않은지 걱정되요."
김선애였다. 그녀는 마지막 말을 마치자 다시 울음을 떠트렸다. 정 박사가 옆에 와서 한손을 꼭잡았다.
"자. 여러분. 그 붉은 포인터가 김지영 박사라고 가정했을 때 우리는 무엇을 해야 하는지 그 준비를 합시다. 구출 내지는 만나러 갈 수 있는가 그 방법을 찾아야 하고, 맛치로 부터 미생물축출을 통한 새로운 저항내지는 박멸 백신을 만들기 위한 기전을 찾아 준비해야 합니다."
윌 박사가 모두에게 격앙된 목소리로 말하였다.
"그렇습니다. 우린 아마추어가 아닌 각 분야의 세계 최고전문가입니다. 영화같이 급조된 박사들이 아닙니다. 앞으로의 전개 변화할 상황들을 예측하며 가장 중요한 백신을 만들 수 있는 기전을 창조해 내는 겁니다. 그것이 김지영 박사가 수집할 것으로 예측 내지는 희망하는 쿠르타이스 박사의 정보와 합체할 수 있는 준비입니다."
데미아누스 박사는 얼굴에 비장한 모습을 띈 채 모여있는 회원 박사들에게 말했다.
“예. 그렇습니다. 데미아누스 박사님 말대로 그렇게 합시다. 지금부터 발생하는 변화한 상황은 즉시 여러분들에게 알려주도록 하겠습니다.”
윌 박사였다. 역시 그는 리더다웠다. 그들이 데미아누스 박사의 말을 듣고 윌 박사의 생각이 변한 정보 공유를 공언하자 곧 각자 자기들 방으로 갔다. 그들이 떠나자 윌 박사는 김선애에게로 왔다.
“미세스 킴. 좀전에 말했던 맛치를 탈취하려던 사람들에 대해서 좀 더 상세하게 말씀해 주시겠습니까? 저도 생각나는 것이 있어서 정리를 해 보려합니다.”
김선애는 잠시 생각을 하였다. 그러나 특별한 어떤 것이 떠오르지 않았다.
“저는 잘 모르겠어요. 박사님이 궁금한 것을 물어보세요. 그러면 제가 기억하여 아는 것에 대하여 말씀드리겠어요.”
그건 맞는 말이다. 때로는 물이 속에서 꽁꽁 언 병도 스스로가 아닌 밖에서 누가 두드려야 소리를 내는 것이다. 윌 박사는 김선애의 얼굴을 뚫어져라 바라보았다. 그는 마침내 입을 열었다.
“그들 중에 한국인이 아닌 사람이 있었다고 하셨습니다. 구체적으로 그 사람들에 대한 이야기를 해 주십시요.”
“예. 그들중 한사람은 중동계였어요. 그 사람이 그 일을 주도하는 것 같았어요.”
“그들은 맛치를 탈취하기 위하여 왜 무기를 사용하지 않았다고 했습니다. 맞습니까?”
“예. 가지고 있었지만 왜 사용하지 않았는지는 모르겠어요. 그러나 저의 오빠 한분이 다리에 엽총 탄을 맞았어요. 잘은 모르지만 그 오빠가 그렇게 말했고 다리에 총상으로 피를 흘리고 있는 것을 봤어요. 어쩧든 맛치를 뺏기 위하여 사람을 죽이는 무기를 사용하지는 않았던 것 같았어요. 그러나 새를 잡을 때 사용하는 총을 휘두르고 한번 쏜 것을 봤어요. 또한, 한국은 특히 외국사람이 무기를 소지하여 사건을 일으킨 경우는극히 드물어요. 그러나 아주 적극적으로 맛치가 든 상자와 그것, 맛치를 가지길 원했었고 행동했어요. 저는 필사적으로 뺏기지 않으려 애썻어요.”
“알겠습니다. 감사합니다.”

Kim Seon-ae was waiting anxiously with Dr. Jeong at the office of the Canadian Society for Unique Microbiology. It was her first time seeing the inside of the Unusual Microbiology Society. There are large screens on every wall, and doctors and their assistants are busy moving around with stiff faces. There were many people busy talking on the phone in front of their computers. Dr. Will, whom Seonae met at the airport, was also hanging on the computer in front of the screen. She had no interest in Kim Seon-ae or Jeong In-gu. It was loneliness amidst the crowds. When Dr. Jeong left for a moment, Seon-ae remembered that Ji-young also had a T-universe, so she opened hers. Everyone was surprised to hear Kim Seon-ae shouting out, and several of them and Dr. Will rushed over and gathered around Seon-ae to watch the red dot on T-Universe move.
“Can you explain what this pointer that is moving right now is and why Dr. Jiyoung Kim is in Canada?”
She was not good enough to calmly listen and explain everything in English. I couldn't speak properly, and my English didn't come out properly because I was so surprised. Now Kim Seon-ae was embarrassed. At that time, Dr. Jeong returned and ascertained her situation and began to rescue Kim Seon-ae.
