그시각, 아시아 각국은 정체불명의 블루웜에 의하여 사망한 환자들의 상세한 상황이 정리되기 시작하였다. 그러나 그것은 며칠 전이었다. 지금 현재시각에 비에트남, 중국, 타이완, 인도네시아, 말레이시아, 태국, 필리핀, 한국등의 국가들에서는 근 두달 전 보다 배 이상의 사상자가 발생하였고 동, 남아시아 국가마다 한 편에선 백신을 찾아 헤매며 다른 한 편에서는 숙주인 돼지고기를 먹지 않은 운동은 물론 유사한 증상이라고 추정되는 사육돈을 불살라 버리고 있었다. 캐나다 엘버타와 호주, 그리스 러시아 미국등에서 수입되는 돼지사료를 전면 수입 중단하였으며 소고기와 닭고기 등에서도 발생 가능하다는 추정으로 육류식용을 잠정 중지할 것을 권하고 있는 상황이 전개되자 수출국의 사육협회와 그 부속협회등이 해당 정부에 압력을 가하고 있었고 갑작스러운 수출중단으로 일자리를 잃은 종사자들의 데모가 점점 확대되고 있었다. 그야말로 블루웜에 의한 파급효과는 엄청났다. 시위와 데모대들은 연일 해당 정부 수뇌부의 무능에 반기를 들며 책임과 해결책과 보상을 요구하고 있었다. 그들 각국의 육류업계는 총체적 파국으로 치닫고 있었다. 결국 이 상황에서 그 마지막 희망들은 세계 미생물학회 본부가 있는 토론토로 몰려 들었다.

“여보. 제임스! 저 북쪽 폭발된 곳에 가면 뭔가 있지 않을까요?”
“응. 그생각도 해봤는데, 멀고 위험해. 지금쯤 캐나다 군이나 경찰들이 수색을 하고 있을지도 몰라. 그들과 만나면 좋을 것 하나도 없어. 우리는 조용히 이곳을 떠나 토론토로 갈 수 있다면 그것이 가장 좋은 길이야. 그것을 위해 끄나풀을 찾아 볼거야. 당신은 쉘터에서 불을 계속 피우고 몸을 좀 녹히고 있어. 나는 먼저 당신이 가져 온 것들에서 필요한 것들을 찾고 주변을 돌아 볼테니.”

“선애야. 자어서 떠나자. 눈보라가 더 심해지기 전에 이곳으로 부터 멀리 떠나야 돼.”
“예. 대강챙겼어요.”
제임스와 선애는 흔적을 거의 없애 버리고 스키위에 의자를 올려 썰매를 만든후 단단하게 묶고는 선애를 앉게하고 빽쌕 두개를 연결해 만든 밧줄을 끌고 눈 벌판을 걷기 시작하였다. 뒤 돌아 보니 금세 눈보라에 의하여 발자국은 지워졌다. 멀리만 떠난다면 그들의 흔적을 찾기란 불가능할 것이라 생각했다. 그는 주머니에 넣어 둔 지영이에게서 받은 전화기를 만져 보았다. 어쩌면 이것이 생명줄이 될 수 있을 것이라 생각했다. 시간이 지날수록 눈보라는 심했고 온도는 내려가고 있었다. 선애가 걱정되었다. 그는 틈틈히 얼굴을 쪼그리고 앉아있는 무릅사이에 넣고 추위를 견디고 있는 선애에게로 가서 얼굴과 다리며 온 몸을 주물러 주었다. 말없이 참고 있는 선애를 본 제임스의 눈에 눈물이 고여 금방 뺨으로 흘러내렸지만, 얼어버렸다.
