"사제미. 무슨 일이에요?"
나는 잠깐 선 채 주변을 살폈다. 약 17만명이 사는 지역의 이 타운도 역시 조용하였다. 나는 권총을 허리에 꼽고M16S를 든 채 차에서 내렸다. 앞 뒤 사방이 고요하였다. 시각은 오후 6시10분이었다. 나는 일단 인심하고 체시로를 내리게 하였다.
"자. 어서 저 가게로 들어가서 신발과 필요한 것들을 삽시다."
"문이 다 잠겼어요. 어떻게해요?"
시간이 없었다. 나는 소총 개머리판으로 출입문 유리를 향해 찔렀다. 유리는 '쨍그랑' 소리와 함께 깨어져 바닥에 흩어졌다. 손을 넣어 문을 열고 들어가 살폈지만,역시 인기척이 없었다. 체시로를 불렀다.
"어서 안에 들어가서 신발과 필요한 것들을 챙겨 나와요."
"주인이 없는데요?"

"여기 돈 있으니 계산대에 놓고 나오면 돼요. 나는 밖에서 지키고 있겠오."
잠시 후, 체시로는 군용 모자를 쓰고 군화를 신고 필드쟈켓을 입고 허리에는수통이 붙은 탄띠를 매고 나왔다. 그곳은 캐나다 육군이 주둔하고 있는 타운이었다.

"나는 여권이 없어요. 국경을 건널 수 없어요. G90은 미국 땅에 있잖오?"
"아하하하~ 그런 문제는 제게 맡겨요. 제가 어떻게 든 당신을 미국 안으로 들어가게 할께요. 제가…"

나는 차의 진행 속도를 조금 낮추었다. 그들은 이 차의 움직임을 포착했을것이다. 그때 체시로가 소리를 쳤다.
"저기요! 저기! 드론이 맞아요. 우릴 감시하고 있어요. 어떻해요?"
나도 봤다. 그 드론은 육안으로 잘 보였으며 두개의 미사일을 장착하고 있었다. 자. 이제 어떡한다… 그야말로 고지가 저기인데… 우리가 이상하게 움직이면 파괴할 것이다. 틀림없이 포언뜨부류(4ONW)가 띄운 드론이다. 거리는 1km이지만 점차 하강하여 내부를 확인하려 할 것이다. 이곳은 아직 캐나다이다. 쏠트 쌩 메리를 지나고 썬더베이(Thunder Bay)를 지난 지 30분, 우리는 미국 땅 무니싱(Munising)을 마다하고 61번 하이웨이를 타고 남쪽으로 왔다. 아마도 이곳은 니빙(Neebing) 카운티(County)일 것이다. 그리고 곧 피죤 강(Pigeon River)이 나온다. 그곳이 캐나다 미국의 국경이다. 그런데, 드론은 어디서 온 것인가? 공군 등 군 부대가 주둔하고 있는 썬더베이? 아니면 국경을 건너 온 미국 드론?
“체시로. 운전대를 잡아요. 내가 저 놈을 잡을 테니.”

나는 운전석 의자를 뒤로 빼고 그녀를 내 앞에 앉게 한 후 내가 조수석으로 옮겼다.

나는 아직 창문을 열지 않았다.
“체시로. 저어기 앞에 우릴 기다리는 드론이 보이지요? 지금 그 속도로 계속 앞으로 전진해요.”
“예. 알았어요. 직진만 하면 되는거지요?”
“현재는 그래요. 긴장 늦추지 마시고…”
드론은 500m 앞 쯤에서 200m 상공에 떠 있었다. 길은 비교적 바닥이 고르고 좋았다.
나는 체시로를 봤다. 두 손은 핸들을 꽉 잡고 긴장하고 있었다. 차선 분리대는 약 3미터 정도로 넓었으며 갈대 같은 풀이 자라고있었다.
“체시로. 천천히 좌측 일차선으로 붙여 서서히 속력을 내요!”
내 말을 듣자 차는 약간 기우뚱하며 좌측으로 차선을 바꿔 속력을 내기 시작하였다.
드론과의 거리는 100미터가 되었다. 나는 즉시 버턴을 눌러 차 유리창을 내리고 총을 차 밖으로 꺼냄과 동시 조준하여 사격하였다. ‘탕탕 타타 탕탕’ 그 소리 속에서 ‘퍽’하는 파열음이 터지며 연기와 함께 드론이 우리 차로 향해 떨어졌고 차는 우측으로 급 회전했다가 다시 좌회전한 후 직진하였다. 불과 15초 정도 안에 이 일이 끝났다. 나와 체시로는 되돌아 보지 않았다.
“체시로! 달려요. 곧 피죤 강이나오고 국경선이 보일 겁니다.”
SUV는 ‘부우웅~’하는 소리와 함께 과속으로 달리기 시작하였다. 거침없었다. 나는 체시로를 봤다. 그녀도 그 와중에 나를 보며 씩 웃었다. 나는 그녀의 오른 손등을 만졌다.

I loaded the M16S rifle and attached a sniper telescope. I just opened the window and waited.
