*운명(運命) 그리고 사랑-02*
"저가 남겠어요. 부상당한 데이빗. 이 사람을 태우세요."
모두들 마지막 겨우 남은 한 자리를 데이빗에게 양보하고 남겠다는 김혜정에게 고마움과 걱정을 하였다. 그들 중 데이빗과 몇 몇은 김혜정을 닥터 김으로 부르며 알고 있었다. 그러나 난감하였다. 2대의 헬기에 필요 승무원과 취재진 을 포함하여 20명이 타기도 벅찼다. 다른 사람을 내리게 하고 김혜정이 비집고 탈 수도 없는 상황이었다. 그들 모두 이쪽 지역은 전혀 모르며 이 추운 환경에서 견뎌 낼 수가 없을 것이었다. 그들은 집이 있는 라버레도에서도 이 혹독한 추위를 당한 사람들이었다. 지금 헬기에 그들은 COVID-19 Pandemic 상황을 잊은 것은 아니었다. 모두가 마스크를 썻고, 틈틈이 쎄니타이즈를 사용하고 있었다.
불시착한 비행기쪽은 수습이 되었고 비행기를 해드무스까지 토잉하여 며칠 수리하면 된다고 하였다. 어쩧든 헬기는 편치 못한 마음의 사람들을 태운 채 김혜정을 남기고 떠나갔다. 비행기가 소속된 회사에 요청하였지만, 당장 그들도 방법이 없었다. 그들과 함께 그들이 만든 임시 쉘터에 며칠을 함께 숙식하며 지내다 비행기 수리가 끝나면 그 비행기를 타고 갈 수가 있지만, 여성인데다 조건상 시간상 마땅치 않았다.
"어디로 가는 길입니까?"
스스로 남기로 하였지만, 황당한 모습으로 떠난 헬기를 보고있는 김혜정에게 물었다.
"한국으로 가는 길이예요. 피어슨공항에서 대한항공을 타야 되는데…"
"아이쿠. 예약은 되었습니까?"
"아니예요. 하지 못했어요. 라브레도에서는, 떠나는 일정이 정확치 않아서 못하고... 그래서 토론토에 도착하여 할려고 했어요."
"급하지는 않은가 보군요."
"아니예요. 급해요. 서울에 계시는 어머니가 연락이 되지 않아서 너무 걱정되어서 빨리 가봐야 돼요."
"그런데… 하여튼 방법이있겠지요. 우선 좀 쉬십시요. 그 사이 안정을 하시고. 저는 정리를 좀 하겠습니다."
"선생님. 도와주세요! 저는 어떻게 해요? 그래도 같은 한국사람이라서 안도했거든요."
"저도 참 대단한 한국 젊은 사람이구나 생각했습니다. 자랑스러웠습니다. 방법을 찾아보겠습니다."
나는 그렇게 말은 했지만, 이 나이에 또 무슨 요상한 일에 말려들까 두려웠다.
우리는 저녁이 가까워서야 해드무스에 도착하였다. 우리가 도착하자 경찰 보안관과 시의원 그리고 몇 몇의 동네주민들과 아이들이 추위에도 불구하고 나와 걱정스러운 듯 우리를 맞았다. 그리고 몇 사람은 사고 장소로 가기 위하여 토 트럭(Tow truck)을 준비하고 있었다. 나도 끼어야 했으나 김혜정의 문제 해결이 더 급했다.
다니엘은 리포트를 작성해서 시를 통해 항공기 회사에 보고할 것이다. 그것이 시장이자 부족장인 그가 할 일이었다.
나는 추위에 떨고있는 김혜정에게 물었다. 이곳 작은 마을에도 서너 곳의 임시 게스트 하우스는 있었다. 한국의 하숙집 같은.
"어두웠으니 우선 몸을 녹일 게스트 하우스로 가시는게 좋을 것 같습니다. 아마도 일박에 60불 정도. 어떠십니까?"
그녀는 멍하니 나를 쳐다 봤다.
"아저씨는 어디에 사세요?"
"저는 저 바닷가 숲 언덕에 삽니다."
"제가 묵으면 안되요? 하룻밤에 얼마인데요? 아저씨는 저를 모르는 곳에 방치할려고 하는거지요? 귀찮은 일에 인발브(invalve=관여되다)되기 싫어서."
그녀는 나를 뚫어지듯 쳐다보며 원망스런 투로 말했다. 캐나다인들 대부분은 남의 일에 관여하여 섞이길 원치 않는다. 그녀도 그걸 알고 있었다.
"그게 아니고… 실은 혼자 사는 노인네 집이 지저분하고 불편할 것 같아서 입니다. 견딜 수 있다면, 아임 오케이. 그래도 괜찮다면… 가시지요."
"예. 좋아요. 새로운 경험을 하지요. 저도 오케이예요."
그제서야 그녀의 얼굴에 미소가 가득하며 좋아하였다. '뭐가 새로운 경험인지?' 내가 당혹 스러웠다. 이 일을 어떡한다. 캐나다 노인네들이 사는 곳은 거의 다 지저분하다. 내 집도 늘 깨끗하게 한다고 하였지만, 젊은 아가씨가 묵기에는 편치 않을 것이다. 그런들 어쩌랴. 이미 가자고 하였는 걸.
스키두는 두 사람이 탈 수 있다. 나는 그녀의 짐을 뒤에 부착된 작은 컨테이너에 실었다. 해는 이미 지고 어둠이 깔렸다. 바람도 불기 시작하였다. 아마도 체감온도가 영하 30도 가까이는 될 것 같았다. 가져갔던 담요 2장을 어깨위로 덮어주고 한장은 다리를 감싸게 했다. 그녀는 유심히 내가 하는대로 보고만 있었다.
내가 사는 집은 통나무로 지었다. 그리고 안쪽은 단열재를 벽에 부착한 후 베니아판으로 막아서 만들었다. 이층 방 하나에 거실 그리고 그 옆에 욕실이 딸린 화장실, 아랫쪽엔 컴퓨터가 있는 거실과 큰 욕조가 딸린 수세식 화장실이 있다. 그리고 그 옆에 부엌이 있다. 일층에는 통나무 베란다도 있다. 그 밑에는 창고 겸 차고도 있다. 그래도 갖출 것은 다 갖추었다. 내가 살기 편해야 하거든.
"와우~ 아저씨. 혼자 사는 집이 이렇게 좋아도 되는거예요? 딱 마음에 들어요. 카티지에 온 것 같아요. 너무 좋아요."
"마음에 든다니 좋군요. 잠깐 저기 컴퓨터 앞 의자에 앉아 있어요. 내 얼른 더운 물 받을테니 뜨거운 물에 들어가 몸부터 녹여요. 오케이?"
"옛스. 오케이~"
다른 원주민 마을과 같이 이곳도 다운타운과 주변은 깨스와 전기가 제대로 잘 들어온다. 인프라스트렉쳐는 정부에서 관심을 가지고 설치하였고 배려하였다. 나는 그녀의 빽쌕과 핸드백을 거실에 옮겨두고 급히 화장실로 가서 욕조를 비누로 닦고 뜨거운 물을 틀었다.
"자. 어서 가서 뜨거운 물에 들어가십시요. 욕조가 넓으니 빠지지 않게 조심하고."
"왠 욕조가 그렇게 크고 넓대요?"
그녀는 그렇게 말하며 옷을 벗다가 주춤하였다. 혼자 살기에 칸막이니 뭐니 필요없었다. 이럴 줄 알았나? 그녀는 아직도 담요로 몸을 감싸고 앉아 있었다.

“I’ll stay. David’s injured. Pick him up.”
Everyone was thankful and worried about Kim Hye-jeong, who decided to stay and give up the last remaining seat to David. Among them, David and some others knew Kim Hye-jung by calling her Dr. Kim. But she was embarrassed. It was difficult to accommodate 20 people, including crew members and reporters, on two helicopters. It was a situation where Kim Hye-jeong couldn't squeeze in and get on after having someone else get off. None of them knew anything about this area and would not have been able to endure this cold environment. They were the ones who suffered from this harsh cold even in Lavaredo, where their homes were. Now in the helicopter, they have not forgotten the COVID-19 Pandemic situation. Everyone was wearing masks and using sanitizing from time to time.
It was said that the plane that had crash-landed had been repaired and that it would only take a few days to tow the plane to Hadmus for repairs. Anyway, the helicopter left, leaving behind Kim Hye-jeong, carrying people who were feeling uneasy. I asked the company the plane belonged to, but they had no solution right now. I stayed with them in the temporary shelter they had built for a few days, and when the plane was repaired, I was able to fly there, but since I was a woman and due to conditions, I did not have enough time.
“Where are you going?”
She decided to stay on her own, but she asked Kim Hye-jeong, who was looking at the departing helicopter in shock.
She said.
"I'm on my way to Korea. I have to catch a Korean Air flight from Pearson Airport..."
“Oh my. Did you make a reservation?”
“No, I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t do it because the departure schedule from Labredo wasn’t accurate, so I tried to do it after arriving in Toronto.”
“I guess it’s not urgent.”
“No, it’s urgent. I have to go quickly because I’m so worried because I can’t reach my mother in Seoul.”
“But… Anyway, there must be a way. First, get some rest. In the meantime, relax. I’ll do some organizing.”
“Sir, please help me! What should I do? But I was relieved because You are also Korean.”
“I also thought that you are an amazing young Korean. I was proud. I will find a way.”
I said that, but I was afraid that I might get caught up in something strange at this age.
We arrived at Headmus only near evening. When we arrived, police officers, city council members, and several local residents and children came out despite the cold and greeted us with concern. And some people were preparing tow trucks. I should have intervened, but resolving Kim Hye-jeong's problem was more urgent.
Daniel will write a report and report it to the aircraft company through the city. That was his job as mayor and tribal leader.
I asked Kim Hye-jeong, who was shivering from the cold. Even in this small town, there were three or four temporary guest houses. Like a boarding house in Korea.

She looked at me intently and spoke in a resentful tone. Most Canadians do not want to blend in and get involved in other people's business. She knew it too.
“That’s not it… Actually, it’s because I think the house of an old man who lives alone would be messy and uncomfortable. If you can bear it, I’m okay. If you don’t mind… please go.”
“Yes. It’s okay. Let’s have a new experience. It’s okay for me too.”
Only then did her face fill with a smile and she loved it. 'What is a new experience?' I was embarrassed. What should I do with this? Almost all places where Canadian seniors live are dirty. I said I always keep my house clean, but it wouldn't be comfortable for a young lady to stay there. What should I do with them? I already asked to go.
Skidoo can accommodate two people. I loaded her luggage into a small container attached to her back. The sun had already set and it was dark. The wind also started to blow. The temperature probably felt like it was close to -30 degrees Celsius. I covered her shoulders with the two blankets I had brought and wrapped one blanket around her legs. She just watched me intently.
The house I live in is made of logs. The inside was made by attaching insulation to the wall and blocking it with veneer board. In one room on the second floor, there is a living room and a bathroom with a bathroom next to it. Downstairs, there is a living room with a computer and a flush toilet with a large bathtub. And there is a kitchen next to it. There is also a log veranda on the first floor. There is also a warehouse and garage underneath. Still, I had everything I needed. I need to live comfortably.
“Wow~ Mister. Is it possible for a house where you live alone to be this nice? I just like it. It feels like I’m in a cottage. I love it.”
“I’m glad you like it. Just sit on the chair in front of the computer for a moment. I’ll get you some hot water right away, so get in the hot water and melt your body first. Okay?”

Like other indigenous villages, the downtown and surrounding areas here also have good access to gas and electricity. Infrastructure was installed with great interest and consideration by the government. I moved her bag and handbag to the living room and quickly went to the bathroom to wash the bathtub with soap and turn on the hot water.

“Why is the bathtub so big and spacious?”
She said that and hesitated as she took off her clothes. Since I live alone, I didn't need a partition or anything. Did you know it would be like this? She was still sitting with the blanket wrapped around her body.
