"혜정아. 마스크!"
김혜정은 긴장된 상황에서 내가 마스크를 주며 쓰라고 하자 놀랐다. 그러나 주변 분위기 때문에 아무런 소리를 내지 않고 받아 착용하였다. 나는 엔진을 꺼고 빽쌕을 메고 혜정의 손을 잡고 미끄러지지 않게 조심하여 현관으로 갔다. 현관 앞의 보도는 양옆의 정원석들이 군데군데 자리하고 있는 사이로 나 있었으며 작은 자갈들이 깔려져 있었다. 현관에서 집 주변을 둘러보았다. 전혀 사람의 흔적을 발견할 수 없었다. 현관의 문은 이중으로 되어있었으며 첫 번째 문은 락이 되어있지 않았다. 두 번째 문 우측 옆에 흰색 바튼이 있었다. 서너 번 눌렀으나 아무런 인기척이 없었다. 잠시 기다린 후 다시 눌렀지만 역시 무반응이었다. 나는 좌측 편 거실이 보이는 창가로 가서 1.5미터 높이에 있는 창을 통해 안을 들여다보았다. 거실 소파가 있었고 그 뒤로 주방이 있었으며 주방과 문이 열려 서적들이 보이는 서재 사이에 난 2층 계단이 보였다. 그 이층 계단 아래쪽에 검은 물체가 보였다. 나는 빽쌕에서 플래시를 꺼내 비춰보았다. 물체는 쓰러진 사람이었고 여성이었다. 나는 놀라 현관으로 달려갔다.
"제임스! 무슨 일이 있는 거예요?"
"아직 모르겠지만, 혜정아. 내 뒤에 꼭 붙어 있어야 한다."
나는 말을 마치고 핸들을 잡아당겼다. 문은 잠겨져 있었다. 나는 잠깐 동안 바깥 주변을 살폈다. 인기척이나 어떤 움직임도 발견할 수 없었다. 바닥에서 정원석 옆에 있는 주먹 크기의 돌을 주워들고 심호흡을 한 후 손잡이 옆의 유리를 향해 가볍게 툭 쳤다. 유리창은 보기 좋게 창문 손잡이 옆이 깨어졌다. '쨍그랑' 하며 유리 조각이 바닥에 떨어졌다. 혜정은 놀라지 않고 나를 믿고 보고만 있었다. 우리는 잠시 기다렸다. 아무런 인기척이 나지 않았다. 나는 손을 유리창이 깨어진 틈으로 넣어 잠금장치를 해제하고 손잡이를 잡고 돌렸다. 그제서야 문은 열렸다. 혜정이가 나를 밀치고 앞에 서서 큰 소리로 외쳤다. 나는 혜정이를 팔로 당겨 왼쪽 겨드랑이 사이로 꼈다. 그리고 바닥을 봤다. 좌측 신발장 아래 바닥에는 남성용 검은색 구두 한 켤레와 나이키 흰색 운동화 한 켤레. 그리고 브라운 색의 여성용 하이탑 부츠와 역시 흰색의 새것 같은 나이키 운동화가 나란히 있었다.
"여보세요! 어머니! 나진희 엄마! 혜정이 왔어요! 아무도 없어요!"
혜정이 소리치는 그와 동시 나는 거실로 달려 들어가 좌우를 살피며 쓰러져 있는 사람에게로 갔다. 플래시에 비친 사람은 50대 여성이었다.
"어머니! 으아악! 엄마!"
