"다른 팀은 어디에 있지요?"
"2 명은 정문 주차장에, 나머지 두 명은 라비에 있습니다."
제임스는 군군의 차에 타서 담배를 빼 물었다. 지금 상황은 잘 못하면 국제적 문제로
비화할 수도 있다는 생각에 긴장되었다. 특히 싱가폴 경찰은 그 조직력이나 민첩함과 정직 도는
세계가 인정하고 있었다. 말레이시아나 인도네시아하고는 또 다른 차원의 전략과 전술이
필요했다. 그들은 이러한 점을 익히 알기에 접선 장소를 싱가폴로 택했을 것이다. 그렇다면
사후 처리가 관건이 될 수도 있었다. 제임스는 액체 병을 조심스럽게 탄창 주머니에 넣었다.
"군군! 스나이퍼에게는 내가 두 손을 위로 들어 신호하기 전까지는 하지 말 것을 전하시오.
그리고 비상시에는 가르시아를 겨누라고 하시오. 내가 철수하면 휴대품 처리를
신속하게 하여 팀 전원이 자리를 떠 국경을 넘어라 하십시오. 나는 가르시아를 잡고 물건을

"알았소. 한 명은 주차된 차를 점거하고 당신은 곧 스나이퍼에게 연락한 후 나를 따르시오."
그들은 인니어로 말하였다. 군군은 제임스가 반둥에 체재할 때부터 알고 지내던 사이였다.
그는 챠이니즈-인도네시언인 부모를 둔 2세였다. 반둥이 고향이었고, 개인 사업을 하겠다며
제임스의 비즈니스 파트너였던 아버지를 움직여 제임스를 멘토로 섬겼었다.
그는 그 후 인도네시아 군에 입대하여 정보요원을 거쳐 행방이 없어졌다. 제이라는 이름을
사용하는 그가 그 군군이었다.
제임스가 호텔 라비로 들어서자 건너편 엘리베이터 앞에 서있던 두 사람이 움직였고, 한 사람은
라비를 빠져나갔다. 라비에는 사람들이 많지 않았다. 회색 런닝 모자를 쓴 사람은 앉았던
자리를 옮겨 라비 입구 가까이의 티 테이블로 옮겼다. 제임스는 그들의 움직임으로 팀의 이동을
감지할 수 있었다.
제임스는 무선 통신시설이 지금 필요했으나 이들에게서는 어려웠다. 경험에 의한 감각에
맡겨야 했었다. 곧이어 군군이 따르자 그들은 엘리베이터를 탔다. 군군의 휴대폰 벨이 울렸다.

긴장하였다. 707호 앞. 제임스는 심호흡을 하며 소리 나지 않게 카드 키를 위에서 아래로 그었다.
"가르시아! 인터폴이다. 움직이지 마."
소리치고 뛰어들며 왼 발로 가르시아의 얼굴을 칼로 긋듯 찼다. 동시에 함께 들어온 팀은
중국인 두 사람 앞에 권총을 겨누며 한순간에 그 둘을 제압하였다.
"제임스. 두마이에 있어야 할 당신이 어떻게 이곳에..."
가르시아는 쓰러진 몸을 겨우 가누며 놀라 소리쳤다. 제임스는 재빨리 그가 앉았던 의자
옆에서 검은색 서류용 가방을 들고 한 손으로 그 가방을 열고는 여행용 세면 백에 들어있는
성냥갑 반만 한 크기의 8테라 바이트 메모리 카드와 저장되지 않은 문서 파일을 확인하였다.
그동안 팀은 중국인 두 사람의 옷을 다 벗겼다. 그들의 입을 테잎으로 막고 두 손과 다리를
태잎으로 묶어 침대에 던졌다. 그들의 안주머니에서 말레이시아 여권과 중국 여권 그리고
중국 인민공화국 첨단과학 방어 집단 소속의 출입증을 회수하였다.
제임스는 군군에게서 받은 액체 병을 두 개의 랩탑 컴퓨터에 있는 각각의 하드 접속코드에
니트라 글리세린과 헥사민 등을 혼합한 액체 폭발물을 부었다. 곧 액체는 연기 하나 내지 않고
컴퓨터 속으로 스며들어 하드를 녹이며 태웠다. 마침내 소리 없이 컴퓨터의 내장 부속품들은
폭발되었다.
"가르시아. 당신을 박은정과 다나를 살해한 살인 혐의로 체포 인도네시아로 압송하겠다."
군군이었다. 포기한 듯 고개를 숙인 그를 입구로 밀쳤다.
그들이 707호를 급습하여 가르시아를 데리고 호텔 앞에 대기한 스포티지를 타고 호텔을 빠져
나온 시간은 불과 10여 분 동안이었다.
제임스는 뒤도 돌아보지 않고 뒷 주차장에 세워 둔 세비 말리부에 탔다. 그는 호주에서
자동차 면허를 정식으로 받았으므로 같은 우측 운전석의 인도네시아나 말레이시아, 싱가폴에서도
별 어려움 없이 운전할 수 있었다. 그의 뒤를 군군이 어코드를 타고 따르고 있었다.
그는 창이 공항이 눈앞에 보이자 속력을 줄이고 에버타냐 장군에게 전화를 했다.
"제임스입니다. 상황은 어떻게 되었습니까? 당신 팀이 가르시아를 압송해 가고 있습니다.
뱍샹 반장에게 인계하십시오. 박은정의 살인과 다나의 살인 공범으로 검거하였습니다.
이쪽 피해는 다행히 없습니다."
"다니엘과 합동으로 반둥 서쪽 안가에서 장 지향을 쉽게 구출하였습니다. 지금 장 지향은 다니엘과 함께 그의 호텔로 가서 안정을 취하고 있습니다. 상세한 이야기는 만나서 하기로 하고 다음은

출입객이 저녁 시간인데도 많아서 혼잡을 이루었다. 그는 군군이 따르는 것을 인지하고
말레시아 항공 호주 콴타스 항공을 살폈다. 예상대로 그들은 브리티시 에어라인 라비의
쇼파에 앉아 컴퓨터를 두드리고 있었다. 그 옆의 젊은 여자는 가방을 챙기는 것으로 봐서 막
도착한 것 같았다. 군군을 찾아 싸인을 주고 그들에게 다가갔다.
"데이브 리! 이 경철! 그리고 베티! 두 사람을 인터폴에서 연행하겠다. 허튼짓하지 마라.
내 주머니 안에는 소음기가 부착된 권총이 당신을 겨누고 있다."
깜짝 놀란 이 경철은 일어나지도 못하고 엉거주춤 다음 행동을 망설이고 있었다.
"베티! 달아 날 생각하지 마!"
군군이 베티의 어깨를 감싸며 오른손에 수갑을 채웠다. 그리고 한 쪽을 자신의 왼 손목에 채웠다.
이 경철은 천천히 컴퓨터를 닫으며 긴장하고 있었다. 이를 눈치챈 제임스가 왼손으로 컴퓨터를
누르고 오른손으로 그의 목 급소를 눌렀다.
"허튼짓하지 말라고 했지. 어떻게 할 거야?"
제임스가 손목에 힘을 주며 물었다. 이 경철이 갑자기 당한 일격에 말을 하지 못하고 눈물을
글썽이며 고개를 가볍게 흔들었다. 제임스는 화면을 확인하였다. 아직 전송되지 않은
상황이었다. 그는 주머니에서 작은 병을 꺼내 키보드 위에 부었다. 하얀 액체는 키보드 사이를
흘러내려 컴퓨터의 하드와 내장품들을 연기 없이 녹이며 태웠다. 이 경철이 황당한 얼굴로
놀라며 바라보고만 있었다.
그들은 사이좋은 환송객처럼 두 사람씩 나란히 걸어 대합실을 빠져나와 주차하고 있던
어코드에 탔다. 군군이 한 손의 수갑을 풀어 이 경철의 오른손에 채우고 나머지 하나를
베티의 왼손에 채웠다. 제임스는 그들 둘을 뒷좌석에 태우고 앞좌석으로 왔다. 이 경철은
이렇게 허무하게 무너져 버린 계획에 대하여 오열을 토하며 울었다.
"인도네시아 경찰을 따 돌렸는데, 이곳에서 잡힐 줄이야."
"이 경철! 가르시아가 체포되어 지금 반둥으로 가고 있소. 4 시간 후면 그를 만날 수 있을 거요."
그 말에 두 사람 모두 화들짝 놀랐다.
"아니. 어떻게?"
그는 놀라 반신반의하며 제임스를 바라봤다.
"당신이 베티와 함께 하였지만, 결국 배신당할 상황이었소. 가르시아와 베티는 반둥대를 같이
