3rd Level : Gi-o(旣誤 기오, Past Error)... Having already gone wrong... Case No 100.
旣誤(기오)는 이미 잘못 알아 그릇된 길로 가는 것이다.
"Gi-o" means following a wrong path due to an existing
misunderstanding or misconception.
그릇된 길로 가는 것을 바른 길로 돌아오도록 애써서 처음 출발한 곳에 돌아와 바르게 뜻을 세우게 해 준다면,
그 공로가 바다에서 물에 빠져 허우적거리는 사람을 구조하는 것보다 더 큰 才知(재지)와 德行(덕행)인 것이다.
If one puts in the effort to guide someone straying on a wrong path back
to the right path―allowing them to return to their sstarting point and firmlyre-establish
their righteous intent―such a meritorious deed demonstrates greater wisdom(talent)
and virtue than rescuing a drowning person struggling in the ocean.

旣誤者는 旣誤解而誤程也라 (기오자는 기오해이오정야라)
Those of "Gi-o" are those who, having already misunderstood,
are on a mistaken journey.
贊及勉返하여 正立於初 (찬급면반하여 정립어초)
By helping and encouraging them to return,
so that they may stand correctly at the beginning,
則其功이 賢於泳海拯人이니라. (즉기공이 현어영해증인이니라.)
Then that merit is superior to swimming in the sea to save a drowning person.
[Commentary & Interpretation, 풀이]
첫 단추를 잘못 꿰면 그 다음부터는 아무리 노력해도 단지 시간의 낭비일 뿐이다.
If you button the first button incorrectly,
no matter how hard you try after that, it is merely a waste of time.
하지만 사람의 일은 그리 단순하지 않아 자신이 잘못된 길을 가고 있음을
스스로 깨우친다는 것은 무척 어려운 일이다.
However, human affairs are not that simple,
making it incredibly difficult for an individual to realize on their own
that they are heading down a wrong path.
따라서 그릇된 길을 바로 잡아 기왕에 잘못 꿴 단추를 모두 풀어 버리고
처음부터 올바르게 시작하게 하는 것이야말로
물에 빠진 사람을 건지는 것 보다 더 큰 공로라는 가르침이다.
Therefore, this teaches us that guiding someone to correct their mistaken path
―undoing all the wrongly fastened buttons ane allowing them from
the very beginning― is a far greater noble deed than pulling a drowning person
out of water.
첫 단추를 잘못 꿴 것은 다시 처음부터 꿰면 되지만
인간의 일이 처음부터 잘못된 것은대부분 완전히 파멸하여 회복 불가가 되고 난 다음에야
비로서 그것이 잘못이었다는 것을 알게 되기 때문이다.
While a wrongly fastened button can simply be re-buttoned from the start,
when human affairs go wrong from the beginning, people usually do not realize
their mistakw until they have reached complete ruin and irreversible devastation.
