5th Level : Sim-jeok(心蹟 심적, Traces of the mind) A Hesitating Mide... Case No 102.
心蹟(심적)은 겉은 착하고 속은 악하여 나타나고 숨기는 것이 드러나지 않으나 오히려 哲人(철인)은 알아본다.
"Sim-jeok" means being good on the outside but evil on the inside.
Although such deception is not easily revealed, a wise person will eventually see right through it.
물은 그 원천을 막으면 넘쳐서 흘러가고, 풀은 뿌리를 자르면 잎이 떨어지니 이것이 자연이 이루는 용서이다.
When water is blocked at its source, it overflows and finds another way to flow.
When grass has its roots cut, its leaves naturally wither.
This process represents the natural way of forgiveness.

心蹟者는 表善裡惡하여 (심적자는 표선리악하여)
Those with "Sim-jeok" present goodness on the outside but harbor wickedness within.
未有賢隱而哲人은 猶視之也라 (미유현은이철인은 유시지야라)
Though they try to hide their true nature from the virtuous ,
a wise sage looks upon them and sees the truth.
水塞源則過流하고 草去根則無葉이니 (수색원즉과류하고 초거근즉무엽이니)
If water is dammed at its source, it overflows;
if grass is stripped of its roots, no leaves can grow.
此恕之自然이니라. (차서지자연이니라.)
This is the natural law of forgiveness.
[Commentary & Interpretation, 풀이]
악한 마음을 숨기고 착한 듯 행동해도 자신 혼자만 속을 뿐 세상 사람들이 그것을 알게 되는 것은 오직 시간문제일 뿐이다.
Even if you hide an evil heart and act as though you are good,
you are only fooling yourself;
it is merely a matter of time before the world finds out the truth.
이를 용서하는 방법은 악의 원천을 막고 그 뿌리는 자른다는 것이다.
Tne way to grant true forgiveness―or to resolve this―is to block the very source
of evil and completely sever its roots.
※ 표리부동(겉과 속이 가름)한 태도를 경계하는 고전적 가르침입니다.
겉으로는 아무리 선한 척 숨겨도 현명한 사람의 눈이나 시간의 흐름 앞에서는
결국 본색이 드러나게 마련이며, 이를 해결(용서)하는 진정한 방법은 겉치레를 고치는 것이 아니라
"악의 근본적인 원인과 뿌리를 뽑아내는것(자연늬 이치처럼)"이라는 뜻을 담고 있습니다.
