情外者(정외자)는 생각하지 않았던 의외의 일이다.
Jeong-oe(情外,정외) refers to an unexpected and unforeseen event.
조각배가 강렬한 태풍을 만나면 어느 누가 나무 조각을 따르지 않고 견딜 수 있으며,
높은 누각에 불이 난다면 어느 누가 뛰어내리지 않고 배길 수 있으랴?
When a small piece of aboat encounters a fierce typhoon,
who could possibly endure it without yielding to the pieces of wood?
If a fire breaks out in a high pavilion, who could possibly withstand it without jumping down?
태풍을 만나고 화재를 당함은 생각치 않았던 의외의 일이며,
나무 조각을 따르고 높은 곳에서 뛰어내리는 것은 용납하고 져 하는 기틀이 된다.
Encountering a typhoon and suffering a fire are unforeseen events, inclination to accept
Thus, yielding to the pieces of wood and jumping down from a high place
become the very inclination to accept and endure.

情外者는 非眞情也라 (정외자는 비진정야라)
That which is "Jeong-oe"(outside the normal scope) is rot
what is ordinary or expected.
扁舟遇颶면 孰不析順이며 (편주우구면 숙불석순이며)
When a small boat encounters a typhoon,
who would not comply and drift along with the broken wood?
重樓失火에 孰不跳下리요 (중루실화에 숙불조하리요)
When a high, Multi-storied pavilion catahes fire,
who would not leap down?
遇颶失火는 是情外也라 (우구실화는 시정외야라)
Encountering a typhoon and suffering a fire-these are indeed
matters outside the normal scope.
析順跳下는 是容機也니라. (석순조하는 시용기야니라.)
Drifting with the wood and leaping dowm- these are the
very starting points(inclinations) of acceptance.
[ Explanation/ Commentary, 풀이]
366事(사)는 인간이 만날 수 있는 모든 일을 366가지로 압축하여
인간이 만나는 모든 상황을 올바로 대처할 수 있도록 배려한 경전이다.
The 366事(366 Matters) is a sacred text(scripture) carefully designed to condense
all the possible events a human being might encounter into 366 catwgories,
thereby enabling people to respond correctly to every situation they face.
이러한 경전의 특징이 유감없이 나타나는 내용 중의 하나가 바로 본 단원 情外(정외)이다.
One of the sections where this characteristic of the scripture is most fully and
clearly demonstrated is precisely this chapter,
情外(정외, Jeong-oe : Matters Outside the Normal Scope).
책상머리에 앉아서 현실과 동떨어진 이론만을 추구하는 학문으로서는
절대로 이와 같은 내용의 진리가 나올 수 없다.
A purely academic pursuit that only seeks theories divorced from reality
while sitting at a desk can never yield a truth of this nature.
이 내용이야말로 결과보다는 과정을 중요시하는 현실에 바탕을 둔 진리이다.
This content represents a reality-based truth that values the actual
process rather than merely focusing on the end result.
배가 파선되었다면 나무조각을 잡는 것이 진리이다.
If a ship is shipwrecked, it is a truth to grasp onto a piece of wood.
불이 났으면 높은 곳이라도 뛰어 내려 생명을 구하려는 움직임이 곧 진리이다.
If a fire breaks out, the instinctive movement to jump down― even from
a high place ― to save one′s life is indeed thhe truth.
배가 파선되었을 때 나무조각을 잡는 것이 잘못이고,
불 났을때 뛰어내리는 것이 잘못이라면 그것이 어떤 이론이든
인간을 위한 이론이 아니며 이론을 위한 이론이기 때문이다.
If holding onto a piece of wood when a ship is shipwrecked is considered wrong,
and if leaping down when a fire breaks out is considered wrong,
then whatever that theory for humanity, but merely a theory for the sake of theory.

● Jeong-oe(情外,정외) :한자 그대로는 '상정(Normal Sentiment/Circumatance)의 밖'이라는 뜻으로,
인간의 힘으로 통제하거나 예측할 수 없는 "불가항력적인 외적 상황'이나 '비정상적인 사태'를 의미합니다.

● 析順(석순) : 쪼개진 나무 조각(부표)을 따라 순응한다는 뜻으로,
