제 16위 矜發(긍발)......가엽게 여겨 나타나는 마음......第115事
No. 16 : Geung-bal(矜發,긍발)... A mind arising from compassion(Pity)... Case No. 115.
矜發(긍발)은 자애로운 마음이 나타나는 것이다.
Geung-bal(矜發,긍발) is the manifestation of a benevolent and loving heart.
이에는 가깝고 먼구별이 없으며, 또 착하고 악함의 구별도 없다.
In this, there is no distinction between the close and the distant,
nor is there any discrimination between the good and the evil.
단지 가엾은 것을 보면 즉시 나타나는 마음이다.
It is a mind that springs forth instantly the moment one withnesses something pitiful.
그러므로 사나운 짐승이라 해도 인간에게 의지해 오면 오히려 이를 구하여 주는 것이다.
Therefore, even if it is a ferocious beast, if it comes to depend on a human,
one should rather save and protect it.

矜發者는 慈心이라 無親疎하고 (긍발자는 자심이라 무친소하고)
Those who practice Geung-bal act from a compassionate heart;
they make no distinction between relatives(those close) and strangers(those distant).
又無善惡하여 但見矜則發이니 (우무선악하여 단견긍즉발이니)
Furthermore, they look past good and evil;
this heart simply manifests the instnt they see something deserving of pity.
是以로 猛獸依仁이라도 猶且救之니라. (시이로 맹수의인이라도 유차구지니라.)
For this reson,even if a wild, ferocious beast relies upon a human,
one should still save it.
[Commentary & Interpretation, 풀이]
사나운 짐승이라도 급하여 인간에게 의지해 올 때는 그것을 구해 주려는 마음이
곧 인간의 본성이며 天心(천심)이다.
Even if it is a ferocious beast, when it turns to humans in an urgent crisis,
the desire to rescue it is precisely the true human nature and the
Mind of Heaven(天心 천심, Cheon-sim).
하물며 인간이 인간에게 급하여 의지해 올때 이를 구해주려는 마음이 생기는 것도 너무도 당연하다.
How much more natural is it, then, for a desire to arise to save another human being
when they come to depend on us in a moment of desperate need?
그리고 이를 외면할 때 외면 당하는 사람보다는 외면하는 사람의 마음에 더욱더 큰 상처가 생긴다.
Furthemore, when one turns away from this call for help,
a far greater wound is inflicted upon the heart of the person
who ignores it than upon the person who is rejected.
만일 그런 마음이 만성이 되어 급한 사람이 의지해 와도 못본 척할 정도라면
이미 天心(천심)은 떠나고 獸心(수심)만이 남은 경우일 것이다.
If such apathy becomes chronic to the point where one can completly
ignore a desperate person seeking help,
it means the Mind of Heaven has already departed,
leaving behind only the Nind of a Beast(獸心 수심, Su-sim).
아니면 魔心(마심)만이 남아있을지도 모른다.
Or perhaps, only a Demonic Mind(魔心 마심, Ma-sim) remains.
인간이 인간의 본바탕을 잃어 獸心(수심)이나 魔心(마심)이 될 때 영혼과 육체는 그것을 거부하게 된다.
When humans lose their original nature and fall into a beastly or deemonic state of mind,
body their soul and body begin to reject it.
따라서 그 사람은 안으로는 각종 질병의 창고가 된다.
Consequently, internally, that person becomes a warehouse for all kinds of diseases.
또 이러한 사람은 이미 사람이 아니므로 사람들은 그를 멀리하게 되며 배척하게 된다.
Moreover, since such a person is no longer truly human,
other people will naturally distance themselves and ostracize them.
따라서 이러한 사람은 밖으로 부터 각종 재앙이 끊어지지 않는다.
As a result, externally endless disasters and misfortuness will
continuously plague this person.
안과 밖에서 이러한 고통이 밀어닥친다면 누군들 생명과 재산을 부지할 수 있겠는가?
If such suffering strikes relentlessly from both inside and out,
who could possibly preserve their life and wealth?
또 죽어서 인들 어찌 편할 수 있겠는가?
And even sfter death, how could such a soul even find peace?
