《신편 찬송가, 1935》342장에 처음으로 채택된 이 찬송은, 새뮤얼 스티넷(Samuel Stennett, 1727-1795) 목사가 아가서 5장 10절 이하의 성구를 가지고 작사한,「보좌에 앉으신 예수」를 찬양하는 경배 찬송이다. 영국의 침례교회 목사 존 리폰(John Rippon, 1751-1836)이 낸 찬송가「명작찬송 모음」'A Selection of Hymns from the Best Authors, 1787'에 처음으로 발표하였는데, 여기에 스티넷의 찬송이 39편이 들어 있다.
새뮤얼 스티넷(Samuel Stennett, 1727-1795) 목사는 영국의 제칠일 침례교회 목사의 아들로 태어났다. 아버지 교회 부목사로 시작하여 아버지가 돌아가신 후 대를 이어 그 교회에서 목회하다가 68세로 세상을 떠났다. 그는 영국 찬송가의 6대 작가로 손꼽힌다. 6대 작가란, 아이자크 왓츠 ? 필립 닷드리지 ? 찰스 웨슬리 ? 존 뉴턴 ? 윌리엄 카우퍼, 그리고 새뮤얼 스티넷이다.
이 찬송은 본래 9절로 되어 있는데, 우리 찬송가에는 5절만 채택되어 있다. 특히 4절을 부를 때면 나는 눈물이 줄줄 흘러 민망할 때가 있다.

곡조「오톤빌」'ORTONVILLE' 은 미국의 토머스 헤이스팅스(Thomas Hastings, 1784-1872)가 작곡하여「맨하탄 찬송모음」'The Manhattan Collection, 1837' 에 처음으로 발표하면서 미네소타주의 오톤빌 시의 이름을 따서 지은 것이다.
의사의 아들로 태어난 헤이스팅스는 시골에서 자라났다 겨울에도 6마일 (9.6km)을 걸어서 학교를 다녔다. 어려서부터 교사로서의 자질을 발휘하였다. 1823년, 헤이스팅스는 뉴욕에서 발행되는「레코더」'Recorder‘ 란 잡지의 편집인이 되었다. 1832년부터 죽기까지 40년 동안 그는 찬양음악 작곡과 출판에 전념하였다. 그가 작곡한 곡조는 1,000 곡이 넘고, 작사한 찬송도 600편에 이른다. 그의 아들은 후에 유니온신학교의 교장이 되었는데, 아버지에 대해서 이렇게 회고하고 있다.

이 가사는《크리스천 시편가》'Christian Psalmist, 1836' 301쪽에 실려 있다.
운율은 C.M. 곧 보통운율(Common Meter?8.6.8.6.)이요, 사용 곡조는 'RETIREMENT'와 'CHESTER' 였다.

Samuel Stennett
Samuel Stennett (June 1, 1727-August 24, 1795) was a Baptist minister and hymnwriter.

He was born in Exeter, but at the age of 10 his family moved to London, where his father pastored the Baptist church in Little Wild Street. Samuel succeeded his father as pastor in 1758, a position which he held until his death. Samuel Stennett received a Doctorate of Divinity from King's College, Aberdeen in 1763.
Although friend and supporter to the reigning monarch, George III, Stennett refused political opportunities to devote himself to ministry. He attained prominence amongst the Dissenting ministry and used his influence with political figures in behalf of Dissenters suffering diabilities under the Clarendon Code.
Stennett authored some 39 hymns, five of which appeared in Rippon's Selection, which was published in 1787. His grandfather, Joseph Stennett, had also been a prominent Dissenting hymn writer. Samuel continued this tradition, although with less passionate language than had marked his grandfather's Puritan-influenced notions of Christian experience.
More than any other of Samuel Stennett's hymns, "On Jordan's Stormy Banks, which was published in Rippon's Selection under the title "Promised Land," found enormous popularity especially amongst 19th-century American Methodists. It was sung in camp meetings and brush arbors, and also found its way into the 1835 Southern Harmony and is part of the American shape note tradition. Several of Stennett's hymns are preserved in the Sacred Harp.
Stennett also printed a memoir ("Memoirs of the Life of William Ward" 1825) of the Missionary to India William Ward which also contained several sonnets and short poems by Ward, which were printed as an appendix. A portrait, engraved by R. Baker from a painting by Overton is prefixed to the same work.
영국의 제7일 침례교회 목사 사무엘 스테넬(Samuel Stennett, 1727~1795) 박사가 작시한 찬송가로 하나의 우량이 같은 찬송가다. 원래 9절로 되어 있으나 우리 찬송가는 1절이 원문의 3절이고, 4절이 원문의 7절이며 나머지는 모두 역자의 찬송시로 대치한 것이다. 하늘로 승천하신 주님의 장엄한 모습을 노래했다.
작시자 스테넬 박사는 1727년 영국의 이그지터에서 태어났다. 그가 어렸을 때 부친이 링컨 인 필즈의 리틀 와이드 거리에 있는 침례교회 목사로 초빙되어 런던으로 이사했다. 1748년 그의 나이 21세 때 부친 교회의 부목사가 되어 1758년까지 10년간 부친을 도왔고 부친이 세상을 떠나자 담임 목사로서 1795년 8월 24일 그가 68세로 세상을 마칠 때까지 그 교회에 시무했다. 런던의 많은 교회 성도들은 비록 교파는 다르나 능력있는 그의 서교를 들으려고 모여 들었고 죠지 3세도 감명을 받은 사람 중을 하나로 두터운 친분을 유지했다.
