Who is Toca?

"i'm Toca Rivera. I'm 5 foot 10, at least sometimes, and i'm half white half black, my mother is spanish/portorican from like spain, americans from spain, my father is a black portorican from african heritage. I grew up with four brothers and sisters, three other brothers and sisters, one sister and two brothers. I grew up in California and i've always been doing music ever since i was a little kid, I stole my father's guitar from his closet when i was 5. I got my brothers and sister signing, for some reason at 5 years old, i knew how to harmonize, how to break up music into the different notes, you know, melodic notes and because of that, i mean, i used to take them, put them all together and do anything... commercials on tv...

As it turned out the only one that stuck with music was my younger brother Carlos, he stucked with music and he's been doing it for a long long time. I stuck with it but there was a time period when i didn't do it, there was a time period when i was a carpenter, there was a time period when i had my own business landscaping, a time period when i was a police officer... These were things that i always wanted to do so... I can say that i basically fullfilled everything in my life that i wanted to do. The one last thing that i have not done yet is to love and be loved by one woman. That's it, so that's what i'm looking for now. It's taking me a long time to find that woman so... but... that's the one thing that i've not done yet, everything else that i wanted to do, i wanted to be a police officer, i wanted to have my own business, i wanted to be a carpenter, i wanted to do music...

I've been doing music all along, even when i was a police officer i did music with my brother in San Diego, that was for maybe a year and then i stopped playing music with him.

Like 6 years ago, i was working in [...] in California, it's a place where they have hardware machines and stuff, i was doing that and i had my lanscaping business at the same time, I told myself that i [...] look seriously into doing music and i ran into my brother at a UB40 concert and he asked me what i was doing. I said i'd like to start doing music again and he said well we'll do music together but this time it won't be two guitars and two vocalists, it will be you playing the Djembe, you playing drum a handdrum, and me playing guitar and doing vocals.

So we started doing that, we did that for about 2.5 maybe 3 years and somewhere at the end of that time, these 2.5 years, we bumped into Jason, Jason came to play in San Diego and my brother and I were playing at Java Joes during their [...] night and Jason came in and played two songs and i said wow i'd like to play with that guy, and my brother jalously looked at me and said no you're exclusive to me always so i said ok whatever.

About a month later, i didn't know that Carlos was [...] with Jason, you know, getting to know his music and stuff and he called me up and say hey i want you to come over to this house in San Diego. When i went to the house, i've never been there before and when i went to the house, it turned out there is Jason and there's Carlos in the garage and they were putting together music and asked me to arrange

... help arrange some of the music and i guess my brother had decided that he was gonna take Jason with us on a tour that we had planned.
So we did that, we took Jason with us, it's [...] a month maybe, and we did really well, just the three of us, three part harmonies, two guitars or one guitar and me playing the Djembe and singing and doing backing vocals, and it worked out very good. But when we got back, my brother decided we wasn't gonna do music anymore so about a month went by and then, i got a call from Jason's roommate, Jerry, asking me to play music with Jason.

I was wondering why Jason didn't ask me himself but that's the way he did it. And so... i said yeah sure... i wasn't playing with Carlos at that time and i wanted to stick to doing music so i started playing with Jason and we did some really stage schedules.

It was tough for a while cause i had a full time job and doing music at night, sometime travelling to LA, sometimes a lot of shows at java joes in San Diego. For the most part it was a lot of shows in Java Joes in San Diego and then some shows in LA and then we started to play heavily in LA like every tuesday one summer.

I've been with Jason for four year, and one summer, we played this place called the Coffee House on Sunset and we did that evey tuesday night. We would start at like 10.30 - 10 o'clock and play 'till 12am - 1am and it takes about 2.5 hours to drive from LA to San Diego.

So it was pretty tough cause we would get off at 1 o'clock and two hours from there it's three o'clock so i'd be at home at least, at the latest, at the earliest at 3 o'clock, sometimes 4 o'clock and then i had to get up at 6 o'clock in the morning to go to work so that was a pretty tough schedule and we did that for a whole summer.

And then, came a time when we went to new york to go and talk with the record labels and Elektra pick us...pick Jason up and the rest is history. I've been playing with Jason for four years now."
