Everyone considered him the coward of the county.
Hed never stood one single time to prove the county wrong.
His mama named him tommy, the folks just called him yellow,
But something always told me they were reading tommy wrong.
He was only ten years old when his daddy died in prison.
I looked after tommy cause he was my brothers son.
I still recall the final words my brother said to tommy:
Son, my life is over, but yours is just begun.
Promise me, son, not to do the things Ive done.
Walk away from trouble if you can.
It wont mean youre weak if you turn the other cheek.

Theres someone for everyone and tommys love was becky.
In her arms he didnt have to prove he was a man.
One day while he was workin the gatlin boys came callin.
They took turns at becky.... there was three of them!
Tommy opened up the door and saw his becky cryin.
The torn dress, the shattered look was more than he could stand.
He reached above the fireplace and took down his daddys picture.
As his tears fell on his daddys face, he heard these words again:

The gatlin boys just laughed at him when he walked into the barroom.
One of them got up and met him halfway cross the floor.
When tommy turned around they said, hey look! ol yellows leavin.
But you coulda heard a pin drop when tommy stopped and blocked the door.
Twenty years of crawlin was bottled up inside him.
He wasnt holdin nothin back; he let em have it all.
When tommy left the barroom not a gatlin boy was standin.
He said, this ones for becky, as he watched the last one fall.
And I heard him say,
I promised you, dad, not to do the things you done.
I walk away from trouble when I can.
Now please dont think Im weak, I didnt turn the other cheek,
And papa, I sure hope you understand:

짚신도 짝이 있듯이 토미에게도 사랑하는 베키가 있었어요

어느 날 토미가 일하고 있을 때 개틀린 소년들이 찾아 왔습니다
그들은 세명이었는데 번갈어 가며 베키에게 대들었지요.
토미가 문을 열고 보니 베키가 울고 있는 걸 보았어요

토미는 벽난로 위에 걸어둔 아버지의 사진을 내렸습니다.

캐틀린 소년들은 토미가 바룸으로 들어가는 걸 보고 막 비웃었지요.
그들 중 한 명이 일어나 토미가 가는 길을 막아섰습니다.
토미가 돌아서자 그들이 이렇게 조롱했습니다. 저 봐, 늙은 겁쟁이가 도망치잖아.
하지만 토미가 멈추고 문을 걸어버린 다음엔 바늘 떨어지는 소리조차도 없었지요
20여 년 꾹꾹 참아 두어던 것이 꿈틀대고 있는 걸
토미는 남깁없이 쏟아 그들에게 보여 주었지요.
토미가 그 방을 떠날 때는 한 녀석도 남아 있지 않았습니다.
마지막 녀석이 쓰러지는 걸 보면서 그는 말했죠. "베키를 위해 어쩔 수 없었어요."
그리고 그가 말하는 걸 들었습니다.
아버지, 전 아버지와 같은 실수를 하지 않고
가능하면 문제거리는 피하겠다고 약속 드렸습니다.
자, 저를 약한 녀석이라고 생각하지 마십시오, 다른 한 쪽 뺨을 내밀지도 않았어요.
아빠, 아빠도 절 이해해 주시기를 바랍니다.
아빠도 남자였으니 가끔은 싸움을 피할 수가 없었겠지요.
