Have you ever said to yourself, “I am impressed with the wonderful truths of God’s Word, but He can’t really expect me to live up to that and work all those details into my life!” When it comes to confronting Jesus Christ on the basis of His qualities and abilities, our attitudes reflect religious superiority. We think His ideals are lofty and they impress us, but we believe He is not in touch with reality-that what He says cannot actually be done. Each of us thinks this about Jesus in one area of our life or another. These doubts or misgivings about Jesus begin as we consider questions that divert our focus away from God. While we talk of our dealings with Him, others ask us, "Where are you going to get enough money to live? How will you live and who will take care of you?" Or our misgivings begin within ourselves when we tell Jesus that our circumstances are just a little too difficult for Him.

(2112) (우리는 주님에 대해서는 잘못 생각하고 있지 않고, 우리 자신에 대해서만 의혹을 가지고 있다면서 종교적인 거짓을 나타냅니다.) We say, “It’s easy to say, ‘Trust in the Lord,’ but a person has to live; and besides, Jesus has nothing with which to draw water—no means to be able to give us these things.” And beware of exhibiting religious deceit by saying, “Oh, I have no misgivings about Jesus, only misgivings about myself.”

(2113) (주님께서는 우리가 할 수 없는 그것을 할 수 있다는 것에 대해서 우리는 자존심이 상하고 두려움을 가지고 있습니다.) If we are honest, we will admit that we never have misgivings or doubts about ourselves, because we know exactly what we are capable or incapable of doing. But we do have misgivings about Jesus. And our pride is hurt even at the thought that He can do what we can’t.

(2114) (나의 의심은 주님이 말씀하신 것을 어떻게 이룰까하는 것은 내 속에서 찾기 때문에 생깁니다—그러나 주님은 우리의 도움을 필요로 하지 않으십니다. 나의 의심은 내 깊은 곳에 있는 열등의식 속에서 올라옵니다.) My misgivings arise from the fact that I search within to find how He will do what He says. My doubts spring from the depths of my own inferiority. If I detect theses misgivings in myself, I should bring them into the light and confess them openly-"Lord, I have had misgivings about You. I have not believed in Your abilities, but only my own. And I have not believed in Your almighty power apart from my finite understanding of it."

★ Only God can make a sinner acceptable to Him. And the New Testament tells us how: “If anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1).

Do you feel unworthy to enter the presence of God? Remember, as Christians, our Savior’s blood has cleansed us, and Christ Himself represents us.

오직 하나님만이 죄인을 하나님 보시기에 합당하게 만들 수 있습니다. 신약성경이 그 방법을 보여줍니다. “만일 누가 죄를 범하면 아버지 앞에서 우리에게 대언자가 있으니 곧 의로우신 예수 그리스도시라”(요한1서 2:1).

When it comes to taking the initiative against drudgery, we have to take the first step as though there were no God. There is no point in waiting for God to help us—He will not. But once we arise, immediately we find He is there. Whenever God gives us His inspiration, suddenly taking the initiative becomes a moral issue-a matter of obedience. Then we must act to be obedient and not continue to lie down doing nothing, If we will arise and shine, drudgery will be divinely transformed.

Drudgery is work that is far removed from anything we think of as ideal work. It is the utterly hard, menial, tiresome, and dirty work. And when we experience it, our spirituality is instantly tested and we will know whether or not we are spiritually genuine.

In this chapter, we see the Incarnate God performing the greatest example of drudgery—washing fishermen’s feet. He then says to them, “IF I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet” (John 13:14). The inspiration of God is required if drudgery is to shine with the light of God upon it. In some cases the way a person does a task makes that work sanctified and holy forever. It may be a very common everyday task, but after we have seen it done, it becomes different.

★ (주님이 우리를 통하여 일을 하시면 그 일을 하는 우리를 변화시키시고 거룩하게 만드십니다. 우리의 몸이 주님의 성령이 거하시는 성전이 됩니다.) When the Lord does something through us, He always transforms it. Our Lord takes our human flesh and transforms it, and now every believer's body has become "the temple of the Holy Spirit" (1 Corinthians 6:19).

★ When Samuel arrived, he rebuked Saul for his disobedience and prophesied that Saul would lose the kingdom (vv.13-14). Saul’s refusal to wait for the development of God’s plan caused him to act in haste, and in his haste he lost his way (see Prov. 19:2). His impatience was the ultimate display of a lack of faith.

A tragedy left a family with a void that nothing could fill. A toddler chasing a cat wandered into the road and was run over by a delivery truck. A 4-year-old watched in shocked silence as her parents cradled the lifeless body of her little sister. For years, the cold emptiness of that moment encased the family in sadness. Feelings were frozen. The only comfort was numbness. Relief was unimaginable. 한 비극적인 사고가 그 무엇으로도 채울 수 없는 공허함을 가족들에게 남겨놓았습니다. 고양이를 쫓아가던 어린 아기가 도로로 들어섰다가 배달 차량에 치었습니다. 4살짜리 여자아이는 부모가 그 어린 여동생의 싸늘한 시신을 끌어안는 것을 말없이 충격 속에 바라보고 있었습니다. 그 순간의 싸늘한 공허감이 여러 해 동안 가족들을 슬픔 속에 가두어놓았습니다. 감정들은 얼어붙었고, 무감각만이 유일한 위로였습니다. 슬픔에서 벗어나는 것은 상상할 수도 없었습니다.

Author Ann Voskamp was the 4-year-old, and the sorrow surrounding her sister’s death formed her view of life and God. The world she grew up in had little concept of grace. Joy was an idea that had no basis in reality.

작가 앤 보스캠프가 그 4살짜리 여자아이였습니다. 자기 여동생의 죽음으로 인한 그 슬픔이 인생과 하나님에 대한 그녀의 관점을 형성시켜주었습니다. 그녀가 자라난 세상에 은혜라는 개념은 거의 없었습니다. 기쁨이란 현실적인 근거가 없는 이상적인 관념에 불과했습니다.

As a young mother, Voskamp set out to discover the elusive thing the Bible calls joy. The words for joy and grace come from the Greek word chairo, which she found out is at the center of the Greek word for thanksgiving. Could it be that simple? she wondered. To test her discovery, Voskamp decided to give thanks for 1,000 gifts she already had. She started slowly but soon gratefulness was flowing freely.

Just as Jesus gave thanks before, not after, raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:41), Voskamp discovered that giving thanks brought to life feelings of joy that had died along with her sister. Joy comes from thanksgiving.
