이탈리아의 은행재벌인 메디치 가의 자손으로

1600년 프랑스 왕 앙리 4세의 왕비가 된 마리는 10년 후 국왕이 암살되자

어린 루이 13세를 대리하여 1617년까지 7년간 섭정을 하다가

아들이 직접 통치를 하겠다고 하여 유랑을 떠났습니다.
 
4년후 돌아온 마리는 루벤스에게 뤽상부르 궁전에 전시할

자신과 앙리 4세의 일대기를 의뢰하여

루벤스가 마리의 일대기 21개 작품은 2년 후 완성하여
1625. 5. 11. 영국 찰스 1세(1648년 청교도혁명으로 참수 당함)의 왕비가 되는

마리 섭정의 딸 앙리에타의 결혼식날 선을 보였지만,
 
앙리 4세의 일대기는 아들 루이 13세의 반대로 그려지지 못하였고,

그후 아들의 탄압에 분노한 마리는

벨기에로 도망가 루벤스가 살던 브뤼셀의 집에서 살다가 세상을 떠납니다..
 
마리 섭정의 일생을 그린 이 대작은

현재 루브르 미술관의 루벤스 관에서 별도로 전시하고 있는데요..
 
당시로서는 꿈에도 생각할 수 없는 남녀평등과

그리스, 로마의 신화, 고전문학과 역사에 관한

루벤의 전문지식을 총동원하여 그려낸

명작이라고 평가받고 있습니다.
