피렌체 바로크의 마지막 대표화가인 카를로 돌치는
반종교 개혁의 가르침에 영향을 받아 자신의 전 생애를 종교화를 그리는 데 바친 화가다.
비날리(Jacopo Binali)에게 그림을 배웠고, 스승의 기법을 답습한 돌치는
피렌체의 다른 화가들이 기념비적인 바로크 미술의 중심지 로마로 이주할 때,
이미 지방 화파(畫派)로 전락하였던 마니에리스모(manierismo) 이후의
피렌체파(派)테두리 안에 머물며 토스카나에 남아
차분하고 정적(靜的)인 피렌체 특유의 전통을 바탕으로 자신의 화풍(畫風)을 개발하였다.
그는 천재성이나 창의력이 뛰어난 화가였다고는 할수 없지만,
감미로운 애조와 섬세한 세부묘사, 부드러운 색상,
강한 명암 대비(明暗對比)를 통한 극적으로 집중된 구도로 표현된 그의 그림들은
당시 널리 유행하며 많은 사랑을 받았다
