그리스 신화에 나오는 반인반마(半人半馬)의 괴물이다. 켄타우로스 일족의 출생에 대해 두가지 설이 있는데 익시온과 여신 헤라의 모습을 한 구름과의 사이에서 낳았다는 설과, 또는 그 둘 사이에서 낳은 아들이 페리온산에서 암말과 교접하여 낳았다는 설이다. 따라서 사지(四肢)는 말이고, 허리 윗부분은 사람이므로, 양손도 갖추고 있다. 그들은 야만적이어서 인간이라기보다는 동물에 가까운 성질이나, 일족 가운데는 케이론이나 폴로스처럼 태생도 다르고 성질도 온화한 것이 있다. 켄타우로스 일족은 라피타이족의 왕 페이리토오스의 결혼식에 초대받았다가 술에 취하여 신부와 여자들을 덮쳤기 때문에, 라피타이족과 손님으로 와 있던 영웅 테세우스에게 쫓겨 그들이 살고 있던 페리온산을 도망쳐 나와 뿔뿔이 흩어졌다. 영웅 헤라클레스가 그의 공업(功業)의 하나로서 에리만토스산의 멧돼지 사냥을 갈 때, 켄타우로스 일족의 한 사람인 폴로스의 손님이 되었다. 이 때도 술에 만취한 켄타우로스 일족이 떼를 지어 습격하였다가 그 중의 대부분이 헤라클레스에게 죽고 사방으로 쫓겨났다. 이 때 죽은 케이론이 켄타우로스 일족 가운데서도 가장 유명하다.

팔라스(아테나 여신)가 반인반마로서 무지를 상징하는 켄타우로스의 머리칼을 부드럽게 거머쥐고 있는 모습을 표현하고 있다. 팔라스의 투명한 옷 위에 그려진 맞물린 3개의 고리 문양은 피에르프란체스코의 가문을 상징하는 것이다. 우아하면서도 온화한 표정을 짓고 있는 팔라스는 왼손으로 화려하게 세공된 무거운 미늘창을 들고, 오른손으로 켄타우로스의 머리칼을 쥔 채 그의 머리를 자기 쪽으로 돌려놓고 있다. 켄타우로스는 크게 당황한 표정으로 오른손에 활을 잡고 있다. 신화에 묘사된 켄타우로스는 반인반마로서 깊은 산 속에서 사냥을 하며 살아가는데, 이 그림 속의 켄타우로스는 나무로 둘러싸인 금지구역으로 들어왔기 때문에 팔라스의 저지를 받고 있는 것으로 추정된다. 이 그림은 메디치가의 정치적 승리의 상징성 외에 이성(팔라스)이 본능(켄타우로스)을 제어한다는 도덕적 메시지가 담겨 있다는 해석도 있다.

그리스 신화에 나오는 최고(最古)의 시인·악인(樂人)이다.  트라키아의 왕 오이아그로스와 칼리오페 사이에 난 아들로(일설에는아폴론의 아들로 전한다), 아폴론에게서 하프[竪琴]를 배워 그 명수가 되었는데, 그가 연주하면 목석(木石)이 춤을 추고 맹수도 얌전해졌다고 한다. 또 아르고호(號)의 원정에 참가하여 하프를 타서 폭풍을 잠재우고, 안테모에사 섬에서 마녀 세이렌들의 요사스런 노래를 하프 연주로 물리침으로써 배의 안전을 도모하였다. 그는 님프의 하나인 에우리디케를 아내로 맞아 극진히 사랑했으나, 그녀는 한 청년에게 쫓겨 도망하던 중 독사에게 발목을 물려 죽었다. 이를 슬퍼한 오르페우스는 아내를 찾아 명계(冥界)로 내려가 하프 솜씨를 발휘하여 그의 연주에 감동한 명계의 왕 하데스로부터 아내를 데리고 돌아가도 좋다는 허락을 받아냈다. 그러나 지상에 돌아갈 때까지는 아내를 돌아보지 말라는 약속을 어긴 탓으로, 에우리디케는 다시 명계로 사라진다. 오르페우스는 아내의 죽음을 몹시 슬퍼한 나머지, 다른 여자들을 돌보지 않은 탓으로 트라키아 여인들의 원한을 사서 죽음을 당하고 시체는 산산조각이 되어 하프와 함께 강물에 던져졌다. 하프는 하늘로 올라가 성좌(星座)가 되었는데, 그는 신들의 사랑을 받은 영웅들의 사후 안식처인 엘리시온이라는 곳에서 하프를 타며 사람들을 즐겁게 해주고 있다고 한다. 이 전설은 유럽의 음악과 문예에 풍부한 소재를 제공하고 있다. 또 그는 영혼의 불멸을 주장하는 비교(秘敎)인 오르페우스교(敎)의 창시자로 알려져 있는데, 이 비교는 후세의 시인이나 철학자들에게 많은 영향을 미쳤다.
