One of the smartest people I know is a college friend who became a Christian while studying at a state university. He graduated with honors and went on to study at a respected seminary. He served a small church as pastor for several years and then accepted a call to another small church far from family and friends. After 12 years at that church, he sensed that the congregation needed new leadership, so he stepped down. He hadn’t been offered a job at a bigger church or a teaching position at a college or seminary. In fact, he didn’t even have another job. He just knew that God was leading him in a different direction, so he followed.
When we discussed it, my friend said, “A lot of people talk about being called to something, but I don’t hear much about being called from something.”
In many ways, my friend’s obedience was like that of Israel’s patriarch Abraham, who went out, not knowing where God was leading (Heb. 11:8-10). Difficulties like famine (Gen. 12:10), fear (vv.11-20), and family disputes (13:8) gave reason for doubt, but Abraham persevered and because of his faith God counted him as righteous (Gal. 3:6).
A life of obedience may not be easy, but it will be blessed (Luke 11:28). |

Genesis 12:1-9
[1] Now the LORD had said to Abram： "Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you.
[2] I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.
[3] I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
[4] So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
[5] Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan.
[6] Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land.
[7] Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him.
[8] And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.
[9] So Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South. | |

내가 알고 있는 아주 똑똑한 사람 중에 주립대학 재학 중에 그리스도인이 된 대학친구가 하나 있습니다. 우등생으로 졸업한 그는 명망 있는 신학교에 진학하여 학업을 계속했습니다. 그는 한 작은 교회의 목사로 부임해 여러 해 동안 섬기다가, 가족과 친구들로부터 멀리 떨어져 있는 다른 작은 교회로부터의 부름을 받아들였습니다. 그 교회에서 12년간 목회를 한 후에 그는 교인들에게 새로운 영적지도자가 필요하다는 것을 느끼고 교회를 사임했습니다. 더 큰 교회에서 청빙 받은 것도 아니었고, 대학이나 신학교에 교수로 초빙된 것도 아니었으므로, 그에게는 정말 다른 일자리가 없었습니다. 그는 그저 하나님께서 다른 길로 인도하고 계시다는 것을 알았기에 그대로 따랐던 것입니다.
그 친구와 이 이야기를 나누던 중 그가 다음과 같이 말했습니다. “어떤 일을 위해 부르심을 받았다고 많은 사람들이 말하는데, 어디로부터 부르심을 받았다는 말은 별로 들어보지 못했네.”
여러 면에서 볼 때 내 친구의 순종은 마치 이스라엘의 족장 아브라함이 하나님께서 어디로 인도하시는지 모르는 채 순종하여 떠나간 것(히 11:8-10)과 같았습니다. 기근(창 12:10)이나 두려움(11-20절), 그리고 가정불화(13:8) 같은 어려움들로 인해 아브라함은 하나님의 뜻을 의심해 볼 만한 충분한 이유가 있었지만 그는 잘 견뎌내었고, 그런 그의 믿음 때문에 하나님은 그를 의롭다고 칭하셨습니다(갈 3:6).
순종하며 사는 삶이 쉬운 일은 아니겠지만, 그런 삶은 복을 받게 될 것입니다(눅 11:28). |

의심 없이 따라가게 하소서 |

창세기 12:1-9
[1] 여호와께서 아브람에게 이르시되 너는 너의 고향과 친척과 아버지의 집을 떠나 내가 네게 보여 줄 땅으로 가라
[2] 내가 너로 큰 민족을 이루고 네게 복을 주어 네 이름을 창대하게 하리니 너는 복이 될지라
[3] 너를 축복하는 자에게는 내가 복을 내리고 너를 저주하는 자에게는 내가 저주하리니 땅의 모든 족속이 너로 말미암아 복을 얻을 것이라 하신지라
[4] 이에 아브람이 여호와의 말씀을 따라갔고 롯도 그와 함께 갔으며 아브람이 하란을 떠날 때에 칠십오 세였더라
[5] 아브람이 그의 아내 사래와 조카 롯과 하란에서 모은 모든 소유와 얻은 사람들을 이끌고 가나안 땅으로 가려고 떠나서 마침내 가나안 땅에 들어갔더라
[6] 아브람이 그 땅을 지나 세겜 땅 모레 상수리나무에 이르니 그 때에 가나안 사람이 그 땅에 거주하였더라
[7] 여호와께서 아브람에게 나타나 이르시되 내가 이 땅을 네 자손에게 주리라 하신지라 자기에게 나타나신 여호와께 그가 그 곳에서 제단을 쌓고
[8] 거기서 벧엘 동쪽 산으로 옮겨 장막을 치니 서쪽은 벧엘이요 동쪽은 아이라 그가 그 곳에서 여호와께 제단을 쌓고 여호와의 이름을 부르더니
