| Freedom At Alcatraz |

A tour of the federal prison on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay left me with some unforgettable images. As our tour boat pulled into the dock, I could see why this now-closed maximum-security federal prison was once known as “The Rock.”
Later, inside the legendary Big House, I stared at shafts of light coming through heavily barred windows. Then I saw row after row of cagelike cells that housed well-known inmates such as Al Capone and Robert Stroud, the “Birdman of Alcatraz.”
But another image made a deeper impression. Stepping into an empty cell, I saw the name “Jesus” scrawled on a wall. In another, a Bible lay on a shelf. Together they quietly spoke of the greatest of all freedoms.
Paul knew such liberty while waiting to be executed. Regarding himself as a “prisoner of Christ,” he used his incarceration to help other inmates discover what it means to be an eternally forgiven, dearly loved member of God’s family (Philem. 1:10).
Barred windows and doors represent one kind of confinement. Physical paralysis, inescapable poverty, and prolonged unemployment are others. Perhaps you endure another. None are to be desired—yet who would trade “imprisonment” with Christ for life “on the outside” without Him? |

Philemon 1:4-16
[4] I thank my God, making mention of you always in my prayers,
[5] hearing of your love and faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints,
[6] that the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.
[7] For we have great joy and consolation in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you, brother.
[8] Therefore, though I might be very bold in Christ to command you what is fitting,
[9] yet for love's sake I rather appeal to you--being such a one as Paul, the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ--
[10] I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten while in my chains,
[11] who once was unprofitable to you, but now is profitable to you and to me.
[12] I am sending him back. You therefore receive him, that is, my own heart,
[13] whom I wished to keep with me, that on your behalf he might minister to me in my chains for the gospel.
[14] But without your consent I wanted to do nothing, that your good deed might not be by compulsion, as it were, but voluntary.
[15] For perhaps he departed for a while for this purpose, that you might receive him forever,
[16] no longer as a slave but more than a slave--a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord. | |

샌프란시스코 만의 앨커트래즈 섬에 있는 연방 교도소 관광은 나에게 잊을 수 없는 몇 가지 이미지를 남겨주었습니다. 우리가 탄 유람선이 선착장에 도착했을 때, 지금은 폐쇄되었지만 경비가 가장 삼엄했던 이 연방 교도소가 왜 한 때 “바위”라고 불렸는지 알 수 있었습니다.
조금 후에, 나는 이 전설적인 큰 교도소 안에서 튼튼한 쇠창살 창문을 통해 들어오는 빛줄기들을 응시하고 있었습니다. 그러고 나서 알 카포네나 “앨커트래즈의 조류학자” 로버트 스트라우드 같은 유명한 재소자들이 수감되었던 새장 같은 감방들이 줄줄이 연결되어 있는 것도 보았습니다.
그러나 더 깊은 인상을 안겨주었던 다른 광경도 보았습니다. 비어 있는 한 감방에 들어섰을 때, 벽에 “예수”라는 이름이 휘갈겨 쓰여 있었고, 다른 방에는 성경책 하나가 선반 위에 놓여 있었습니다. 이들은 자유 중에서 가장 고귀한 자유에 대해 서로 소리 없이 증언하고 있었습니다.
바울은 처형을 기다리고 있는 동안 그와 같은 자유에 대해 알고 있었습니다. 그는 자신을 “그리스도의 죄수”로 여기며, 갇혀 있는 기간을 이용하여 다른 죄수들에게 영원히 용서 받는다는 것과 사랑받는 하나님의 가족 구성원이 된다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 알게 해주었습니다(몬 1:10).
창살이 있는 창문들과 문들은 일종의 감금을 나타냅니다. 그리고신체의 마비, 벗어날 수 없는 빈곤, 그리고 장기실업 등은 또 다른 종류의 감금입니다. 어쩌면 당신은 이와는 다른 감금 상태를 견디어나가고 있을지도 모르겠습니다. 어느 것도 겪고 싶지 않은 것들이지만, 어느 누가 그리스도와 함께 있는 “감금”을 주님 없는 “세상”의 삶과 서로 맞바꾸려 하겠습니까? |
