| Fear And Love |

What does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear [Him] ... and to love Him. -Deuteronomy 10:12
|
Someone shared with me her observation about two bosses. One is loved but not feared by his subordinates. Because they love their boss but don’t respect his authority, they don’t follow his guidelines. The other boss is both feared and loved by those who serve under him, and their good behavior shows it.
The Lord desires that His people both fear and love Him too. Today’s Bible passage, Deuteronomy 10, says that keeping God’s guidelines involves both. In verse 12, we are told “to fear the Lord your God” and “to love Him.”
To “fear” the Lord God is to give Him the highest respect. For the believer, it is not a matter of feeling intimidated by Him or His character. But out of respect for His person and authority, we walk in all His ways and keep His commandments. Out of “love,” we serve Him with all our heart and with all our soul—rather than merely out of duty (v.12).
Love flows out of our deep gratitude for His love for us, rather than out of our likes and dislikes. “We love Him because He first loved us”(1 John 4:19). Our fear and love for God enable us to walk willingly in obedience to God’s law. |

Deuteronomy 10:12-17
[12] "And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
[13] "and to keep the commandments of the LORD and His statutes which I command you today for your good?
[14] "Indeed heaven and the highest heavens belong to the LORD your God, also the earth with all that is in it.
[15] "The LORD delighted only in your fathers, to love them; and He chose their descendants after them, you above all peoples, as it is this day.
[16] "Therefore circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be stiff-necked no longer.
[17] "For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe. | |

| 경외와 사랑 |

어떤 여자 분이 두 명의 직장 상사에 대한 생각을 나에게 들려주었습니다. 한 상사는 부하들이 좋아하지만 무서워하지는 않습니다. 그들은 자기 상사를 좋아하기는 하지만 그의 권위를 존중하지 않기 때문에 상사의 지시에 따르지 않습니다. 다른 상사는 섬기는 부하들이 무서워하는 동시에 좋아하는데, 그들의 고분고분한 태도가 그것을 보여줍니다.
하나님은 자신의 백성들이 그를 경외하는 동시에 사랑하기를 바라십니다. 오늘의 성구 신명기 10장은 하나님의 지시를 따르는 것은 둘 다를 포함한다고 말합니다. 12절에 “네 하나님 여호와를 경외”하며 “사랑하라”라고 말하고 있습니다.
하나님을 “경외”한다는 것은 그 분에게 최고의 경의를 표하는 것입니다. 신자에게 있어서 경외는 하나님이나 하나님의 특성 때문에 위협을 느끼는 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 하나님의 인격과 권위를 존중하는 마음에서 온전히 주님의 길로 가며 주님의 명령들을 지키는 것입니다. 단지 의무로서가 아니라 “사랑”으로 우리의 마음과 성품을 다해 그 분을 섬기는 것입니다(12절).
사랑은 우리가 좋아하고 싫어하는 감정으로부터가 아니라 우리를 향하신 주님의 사랑에 대한 깊은 감사에서 흘러나옵니다. “우리가 사랑함은 그가 먼저 우리를 사랑하셨음이라”(요일 4:19). 하나님을 향한 경외와 사랑은 우리가 하나님의 말씀에 기꺼이 순종하며 걸어가도록 해줍니다. |

신명기 10:12-17
[12] 이스라엘아 네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 요구하시는 것이 무엇이냐 곧 네 하나님 여호와를 경외하여 그의 모든 도를 행하고 그를 사랑하며 마음을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 네 하나님 여호와를 섬기고
[13] 내가 오늘 네 행복을 위하여 네게 명하는 여호와의 명령과 규례를 지킬 것이 아니냐
[14] 하늘과 모든 하늘의 하늘과 땅과 그 위의 만물은 본래 네 하나님 여호와께 속한 것이로되
[15] 여호와께서 오직 네 조상들을 기뻐하시고 그들을 사랑하사 그들의 후손인 너희를 만민 중에서 택하셨음이 오늘과 같으니라
[16] 그러므로 너희는 마음에 할례를 행하고 다시는 목을 곧게 하지 말라
