| Time To Pray? |

One morning, when I was a young child, I was sitting in the kitchen, watching my mother prepare breakfast. Unexpectedly, the grease in the skillet in which she was frying bacon caught fire. Flames shot into the air and my mother ran to the pantry for a bag of flour to throw on the blaze.
“Help!” I shouted. And then I added, “Oh, I wish it was time to pray!” “It’s time to pray” must have been a frequent household expression, and I took it quite literally to mean we could pray only at certain times.
The time to pray, of course, is any time—especially when we’re in crisis. Fear, worry, anxiety, and care are the most common occasions for prayer. It is when we are desolate, forsaken, and stripped of every human resource that we naturally resort to prayer. We cry out with the words of David, “Help me, O Lord!” (Ps. 70:1).
John Cassian, a 5th-century Christian, wrote of this verse: “This is the terrified cry of someone who sees the snares of the enemy, the cry of someone besieged day and night and exclaiming that he cannot escape unless his Protector comes to the rescue.”
May this be our simple prayer in every crisis and all day long: “Help, Lord!” |

[1] To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. To bring to remembrance. Make haste, O God, to deliver me! Make haste to help me, O LORD!
[2] Let them be ashamed and confounded Who seek my life; Let them be turned back and confused Who desire my hurt.
[3] Let them be turned back because of their shame, Who say, "Aha, aha!"
[4] Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; And let those who love Your salvation say continually, "Let God be magnified!"
[5] But I am poor and needy; Make haste to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay. | |

| 기도하는 시간? |

어린 시절 어느 날 아침, 나는 부엌에 앉아서 어머니가 아침 준비하는 것을 보고 있었습니다. 그런데 갑자기 베이컨을 굽고 있던 냄비의 기름에 불이 붙었습니다. 불길이 솟아오르자 어머니는 불을 끄는데 필요한 밀가루를 가지러 부엌 벽장으로 달려갔습니다.
“도와주세요!”라고 나는 외쳤습니다. 그리고 동시에 “지금이 기도하는 시간이었다면 얼마나 좋을까?”라고 중얼거렸습니다. “같이 기도합시다.”라는 말은 분명히 우리 집에서 자주 쓰던 표현이었는데, 나는 그 말을 말 그대로 기도는 어느 특정한 시간에만 해야 하는 것으로 이해했던 것입니다.
물론 기도는 언제든지 하는 것이며 특히 위기에 처했을 때에는 더욱 말할 나위도 없습니다. 우리가 가장 기도를 많이 하는 때는 대개 두려움, 근심, 걱정, 그리고 염려가 있을 때입니다. 고독할 때, 버림받았을 때, 그리고 사랑하는 사람들을 잃었을 때, 우리는 자연스럽게 기도에 의지합니다. 다윗의 기도처럼 “여호와여 속히 나를 도우소서”(시 70:1)라고 울부짖습니다.
5세기 당시 기독교인이었던 존 카시언은 다음과 같이 썼습니다. “기도는 원수의 올가미에 걸려서 빠져나오지 못해 밤낮으로 고통 받을 때나 하나님께서 구조해 주시지 않으면 빠져나갈 수 없을 때 외치는 처절한 울부짖음이다.”
모든 위기 때마다, 또 온 종일 “주님, 도와주세요!”가 우리의 간단한 기도가 되기를 간구합니다. |

[2] 나의 영혼을 찾는 자들이 수치와 무안을 당하게 하시며 나의 상함을 기뻐하는 자들이 뒤로 물러가 수모를 당하게 하소서
[3] 아하, 아하 하는 자들이 자기 수치로 말미암아 뒤로 물러가게 하소서
[4] 주를 찾는 모든 자들이 주로 말미암아 기뻐하고 즐거워하게 하시며 주의 구원을 사랑하는 자들이 항상 말하기를 하나님은 위대하시다 하게 하소서
