Director’s Cut DVD: Frequently Asked Questions
Hello, this is the Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bokju Director’s Cut DVD Promotion Team. There have been a lot of general questions that we would like to address here. We hope this answers your questions to the fullest extent, and please do not hesitate to ask any further questions or concerns.
1. What is a Director’s Cut DVD?
- In general, there are three types of DVDs for TV shows – Director’s Cut, Premium Edition, and a General Edition. This team is working towards the Director’s Cut DVD. The following briefly explains the processes for each of the different types.
Director’s Cut: The director re-inserts scenes that were edited out in the aired version due to length issues and other scenes that he/she wishes to present to viewers. Therefore, this is very meaningful to fans and is worth the purchase.
Premium Edition: The original version is not re-edited and exclusive scenes are provided on a separate disk. This is done when the director chooses not to re-edit. The production method and layout are similar to the Director’s Cut.
General Edition: There are no exclusive scenes, and the content is the same as the aired version. This is usually produced by the production or the broadcasting company without the involvement of the Promotion Team. Therefore, it is difficult to include extended exclusive content or commentaries.
2. What is the Director’s Cut DVD Promotion Team?
- As explained above, Director’s Cut/Premium Edition and General Edition have different production methods. The first two methods can reflect the demands and wishes of the customers in the layout. For example, unreleased angle shots of Bokju and JoonYeong’s kiss scenes or couple commentaries can be requested, and bonus material can be added by negotiating with the distribution company. In order to better gather and facilitate these demands, the Director’s Cut DVD Promotion Team was formed.
3. Why are you doing a demand survey?
- A lot of time and resources go into producing a Director’s Cut or Premium Edition DVD because of the re-editing costs, commentary insertions, and other bonus materials. Therefore, a pre-order demand survey is conducted in order to gauge the demand. If the minimum order amount set by the distribution company is not met, then the DVD production becomes canceled. Therefore, it is important to publicize this as much as possible to customers during the pre-order period. Normally, the minimum amount is around 1500~2000 copies, and this number may change following negotiations with the distribution company.
4. Then what is in a Director’s Cut DVD?
- As explained before, the Director’s cut DVD contains newly edited episodes, extra footage, and other bonus material. The most basic layout includes an outbox, digipak, the original disk, extra footage disk, and other bonus material.
To go in detail:
Outbox: This is the box that contains the DVD disks and the digipak. It is designed to be characteristic of the show, and it is useful for storing the DVD. All of the examples in the image are called outboxes.

Digipak: It is used to hold the disks in place. The following form is called a digipak, and it can be produced with different designs.

Original disk: This is the disk that contains the episodes reborn by the director. The Director’s Cut, if pursued, will entertain viewers differently than the original episodes. Moreover, the logo of the show and others will not be shown, so viewers can enjoy the show with a cleaner view.
Extra footage disk: This disk includes commentaries, interviews, exclusive behind-the-scenes, script readings, bloopers, compilation of kiss scene angle shots, and other footage that is not part of the original episodes. These are usually compiled at the request of viewers, and these footages are not released anywhere else.
Other bonus material: Separate from the disk, this includes the script, unreleased soundtrack and photo album, postcards, and more. Bonus material is mostly given to those who submit early payments, and like the extra footage disk, this is produced taking into account the demands of the viewers. This is also composed of never-seen-before materials.
5. How much is it approximately?
- The price varies depending on the number of disks. At this time, it is difficult to state the price, but approximately, a 16-episode show comes out to over 100,000 won. Monthly payments are accepted in order to alleviate the burden.
6. When will the production be confirmed?
- At this point, we are behind our pre-order quota. If more fans fill out the demand survey and leave a comment on the café, then the production gains momentum. After, initial payments are accepted, and a minimum number of purchases must be made during this period in order to confirm production. Therefore, advertisement is crucial. In summary,

7. Why is there no campaign for Blu-ray?
- When the Promotion Team was formed, there was a vote whether to pursue a double Blu-ray/DVD or a single DVD campaign. Blu-ray is produced in HD, so it is superior quality, but there is a minimum quota (over a 1000 copies) and higher price range due to its production abroad. In our case, we felt that the high cost of Blu-ray would deter customers away, there is an uncertainty if the quota would be met, there is a need to concentrate our efforts as much as possible, and that there would be a lot of international purchases. Therefore, we decided to promote a single DVD campaign. We’re sorry to those who wished to purchase a Blu-ray, but this was the best decision in order to ensure production.
8. Can I purchase from abroad?
- International fans and those who live outside Korea are able to purchase, and we will try our best to negotiate with the distribution company in order to make purchase and delivery the smoothest as possible.

The Director’s Cut DVD would be the best gift to all of the fans, and it will also be very meaningful for the directors, writers, and actors.
