이팝나무야

그 힘들었던 보릿고개!
멀리는 조국 잃고 북간도에서
보릿고개 넘는 동포들의 서러운 그림자
6.25 전란에 이고 진 긴 하얀 피난행렬
죽고 사는 절박함 속에서
그래도 그 시절에는
낯모르는 사람들과
이밥 꽁보리 주먹밥도 서로 나눠먹고
슬픈 일 당하면 같이 아파하고
서로 배려하는 훈훈한 인정에
전쟁의 공포 배고픔도 견딜 수 있었지
6월의 하얀 눈꽃
이팝나무야
너는 아느냐
허기진 보릿고개
널 두고 마음 속에
하얀 이밥을 그려보던 애틋한 심정
지금은 아니야
이젠
넉넉한 풍요의 시대
넌 그냥 5월의 하얀 눈꽃이야
너를 고운 꽃으로 사랑할거야
6월 훈풍에 넉넉하게
너울너울 춤을 추는 꽃으로만 말이야!

불과 한 세대 전 모두가 배고팠던 보릿고개 시절 허기진 사람들 눈에
하얗게 핀 이팝나무꽃이 쌀밥(이밥)처럼 보여 쌀나무란 별칭이 있었다.
