시대를 깨우는 선지자의 외침이라 불리는 토저는 이 책에서 성도들에게 피조물을 생각하듯이 창조자를 생각하는 습관을 버려야 한다고 말한다. 하나님은 무엇과도 비교할 수 없다. 하지만 오늘날 그리스도인들은 하나님의 불같은 거룩과 위엄을 그분에게서 떼어냄으로써 그분과 교제하려고 노력한다. 그들은 스스로를 그리스도인이라고 부르며, 하나님에 관해 말하며, 때로 하나님께 기도 하지만, 하나님이 누구신지 모르는 게 분명하다. 우리의 삶에 영적인 능력을 회복하려면 하나님에 대한 우리의 생각이 ‘있는 그대로의 하나님’에 더 가까워져야 한다. 만약 단 한 권의 신앙서적만 읽을 수 있다면, 주저 없이 하나님이 어떤 분인지 알 수 있는 책을 읽으라 권하고 싶다. 기도에 관한 책, 전도에 관한 책, 경건 생활에 관한 책 등 실제적으로 도움을 줄 수 있는 수없이 많은 책이 있지만 우리가 믿는 분이 어떤 분인지를 바로 알고 예배하는 것이 중심이 되지 않고서는 어떤 신앙생활도 의미 없을 것이다. 이 책을 읽으면서 우리는 거룩한 하나님이 어떤 분인지 간과하기 쉬운 정신없는 시대를 살아가고 있단 걸 깨닫게 된다. 우리의 신앙생활이 창조주이신 ‘하나님’이 아니라 ‘나’에 집중해왔단 사실을 알게 되면서 믿음의 본질되신 창조주를 바로 아는 것이 다른 무엇보다 우선이라는 걸 알게 될 것이다.

The history of mankind will probably show that no people has ever risen above its religion, and man's spiritual history will positively demonstrate that no religion has ever been greater than its idea of God. For this reason the gravest question before the Church is always God Himself, and the most portentous fact about any man is not what he at a given time may say or do, but what he in his deep heart conceives God to be like.
So necessary to the Church is a lofty concept of God that when that concept in any measure declines, the Church will her worship and her moral standards declines along with it.

For He is everywhere while He is nowhere, for "where" has to do with matter and space, and God is independent of both. He is unaffected by time or motion, is wholly self-dependent and owes nothing to the worlds His hands have made.
Man for all his genius is but an echo of the original Voice, a reflection of the uncreated Light. As a sunbeam perishes when cut off from the sun, so man apart from God would pass back into the void of nothingness from which he first leaped at the creative call.

Since God is uncreated, He is not himself affected by that succession of consecutive changes we call time. God dwells in eternity but time dwells in God. He has already lived all our tomorrows as He has lived all our yesterdays. An illustraion offered by C. S. Lewis may help us here. He suggestes that we think of a sheet of paper infinitely extended. That would be eternity. Then on that paper draw a short line to represent time. As the line begins and ends on that infinite expanse, so time began in God and will end in Him.
