<피카소, 15세에 그린 자화상>
1881년에 태어난 피카소는, 다작의 시기,
혹은 초기라고 여기기 쉬운
'청색시대'만 해도,
피카소에게는 20대의 일이다.
14살에 바르셀로나의 미술학교에 입학하였고
16세에 마드리드 왕립미술학교에 들어가
첫 개인전을 열었다는 것만 하여도
그의 미술에 대한 열정을 알 수 있다.
5살 때부터 그림을 그렸을 뿐 아니라
미술대회에서 입상을 했었다는 사실을 알고 난다면 15년동안
그림을 그린 후의 작업이 '청색시대'라고 할 수 있다.

20세의 피카소
스페인에서 미술선생의 아들로 태어난 피카소는
바르셀로나에서 교육을 받았고, 1900년에서 1906 사이에
이미 파리에서 명성을 얻었다.
그는 다작의 '청색 시대'와 '장미빛 시대'에
툴루즈 로트렉, 아르누보, 상징주의의 영향을 받아
소외되고 버려진 계층에 속하는 외로운 인물들의
기이하고 우수에 찬 이미지들을 창조했다.
