서인도제도의 세인트토머스섬[島] 출생. 1855년 화가를 지망하여 파리로 나왔으며, 같은 해 만국박람회의 미술전에서 코로의 작품에 감명받 아 그로부터 풍경화에 전념하였다. 그리고 몇 차례 살롱에 출품하였으나 번번이 낙선하고 1870년의 프로이센-프랑스전쟁 때는 런던으로 피난하여 그곳에서 모네와 함께 J.터너 등의 영국 풍경화를 연구하였다. 전후에는 파리 북서쪽 교외에 정주하면서 다시 질박(質朴)한 전원풍경을 연작, 1874년에 시작된 인상파그룹전(展)에 참가한 이래 매회 계속하여 출품함으로써 인상파의 최연장자가 되었다.
그의 작풍은 인상파 특유의 기법을 바탕으로 수수하면서도 견실성을 보여 모네와 시슬레보다 한층 구성적인 면에 특색을 보였으나, 1850년대 중반경 한때 G.슬러의 점묘법(點描法)에 끌려 밝고 섬세한 규칙적인 필법에 의한 작품도 남겼다. 만년에는 시력이 약화되었으나 최후까지 제작활동을 계속하여 인상주의 운동과 운명을 함께 하려는 성실성을 보였다. 주요 작품으로는 《붉은 지붕》(1877, 루브르미술관 소장) 《사과를 줍는 여인들》(1891) 《몽마르트르의 거리》(1897) 《테아트르 프랑세즈광장》(1898) 《브뤼헤이 다리》(1903) 《자화상》(1903) 등이 있다. 출처:네이버 백과 | |
